This can't stand. Post anything about these rifles.
Just bought this 54 Tula off of a fellow anon here on /k/ with 120 rounds, 11 stripper clips, and a 20 round Tapco mag for $500. Pretty happy right now.

What is the purpose of this pin at the grip, between the bayonet Grove and the cleaning rod slot?

Also, I'm gonna bubba this stock and you can't stop me.

Plans are to fill the bayo groove, get a rubber stock pad, strip and refinish to try and get it high-contrasting dark brown with black grain (or as close as I can get to that) with a flat finish, and add a steel cheesegrater handguard.

Got it for cheap on ebay, has no serial, and someone already fucked with the bayo groove, so purists can suck a dick, and in any case I'm keeping the original furniture in tact so it's not like it isn't reversable.

But the Mosin is more powerful and cheaper. It's also good if you're an idiot, since it's much simpler than the SKS.
>>
>>32159323
Let's go with 75m.
>>
>>32159348
desu I don't think that its cheaper in the long run
Saw a box of 20 rounds of 54r at Bass Pro for 12 bucks, whereas you can get double that for the same price. SKS might be more expensive up front, but ammo is cheaper/more plentiful;
Mosins were only good back when they were literally $90 for a cosmoline drenched gun. Now that they're running $200-300, its not worth it imo.
>>
>>32159422
*double the rounds of x39 for the same price
>>
>>32159348
Per round perhaps but being able to load 2x the firepower and fire it probably 3x as fast or more definitely makes the SKS more favorable to me. Both fire a .30 cal projectile. The only thing the Mosin has on the SKS as far as I'm concerned is range.
The SKS also looks pretty neat to me.

How much are those ChiCom fixed 20-rounders?

This and something to extend the LoP (I have a rubber buttpad on mine because I'm not a malnourished peasant) have always struck me as the only SKS "upgrades" that are legitimately upgrades.
>>
>>32160643
What about a rear-sight mod, like a peep-sight, and maybe a high-contrast front post? I think they'd be usefull modifications.
>>
>>32160662
Your mileage may vary there. I personally hate peep sights compared to open sights and find them to be detrimental to your overall field of view.

Hi-vis sights could be good though.
>>
>>32160713
I supposed it's a matter of opinion. Everything else I've ever shot has had some kind of a peep sight or ghost ring or what have you, so adjusting to the open sights on the sks is a bit of a process.

So it just gets darkened from shooting with it up, comes right off with a rag though.

It's also a Norinco, so maybe that's why? I'm sure I can get it all off with really deep cleaning though.

What purpose does the trigger guard spring (29) have?

I recently moved, before I left I went shooting, and stupidly didn't put it back together after I finished cleaning it. So it went to my new place disassembled

I went to put the magazine and trigger back on and I'm noticing it's gone, looked around everywhere I can think of and I don't know where it is.

Will the rifle shoot fine without it? Where should I look for replacements?
>>
>>32162159
(ignore the cheapo chinese sling)

Assuming that's a surplus ChiCom sling and not some NCStar-tier knockoff that's one of the best milsurp 2-point slings available, anon. I use them on all my ComBloc shit because I like them more than any other commie country's sling.

No shame, game recognize game
>>
>>32163565
Forces the trigger assembly out when the disassembly button is pressed, provides tension holding the assembly in place when the button is not pressed. I don't believe it would affect firing that much, other than the assembly might feel a bit loose. Won't stop the hammer from hitting the pin in any case.

What sort of ammo pouches do you all use with your SKSs? Mine is still in the mail, but I ordered on of these East German ones. I have also seen the green Chinese apron-style bandoliers and the leather Yugo belt pouches

My pockets, mostly.
What EG pouches are those?
They don't look near as deep as their standard AK pouches.

You're correct. These are the grenade pouches
>>
>>32164650
Neat.
Where'd you get them, if you don't mind me asking?
>>

Ebay. I searched "EG sks pouch" or something like that. I paid $8 including shipping, so they're pretty affordable.

Here's one listing:

Seems that boat has sailed.
Although I'm not sure why with the somewhat recent influx of M67 crates.
Guess folks just think that they can get $1+ for a tab of metal and others will pay it.

Thanks again for the EG grenade pouch link though.
Seems like it'll be a nice little clip pouch.

I've been looking at an SKS as kind of a lark but don't know much about them beyond what's being shouted by people trying to offload them and a few forums with broken images. I was glad to find this thread to get some answers.

I've seen both Chinese and Yugoslavian for sale, are either preferable? Any particular features or flaws I should be looking for on these (kind of addressing the "SKS-D" versus "SKS-M" bit here)? What should I realistically pay for a good condition SKS?

I'm not too sure about all the different models, but I know that usually people say Russian is the best, but also most expensive and hardest to find.

I went with Yugo (pic related) because they are the easiest to find in unissued condition. Some people complain that the grenade launcher nozzle makes them nose-heavy, but they are pretty affordable (Classic Firearms ~$430) and the fit, finish, and accuracy are supposed to be good.

Unsurprisingly, the Chinese ones are very variable in terms of quality, which scared me away, but they can be had for even less than the Yugo (~$350). They also seem to be pretty easy to find, although some don't have bayonets, which is another turn off for me

The third kind that I have seen a lot are the Yugo leather pouches, which don't really appeal to me at all. They often come free with a Yugo SKS, but I wouldn't pay for one because they often seem not to be in very good condition, plus leather is more maintenance and loses durability with age

Any recommendations for breaking this free? Don't want to have to drill the thing off.
>>

you don't have to pull that out for a full disassembly mang. it's a pin that the trigger group and magazine cover hook around. why do you want to remove it?

>>32166019

Watch a 5 minute video on youtube and itll show you everything.

Anyways right behind the trigger guard is a little indent that you push in with a punch/small screwdriver/anything and it will release the trigger/magazine from the receiver, which in turn frees the receiver from the stock.

If your gun came with the cleaning kit that goes in the stock than you should have a punch in there otherwise use literally anything to push that indent in. To put it back together you slot everything in correctly and just push the trigger+reveiver together really fucking hard and itll click if you lined it up right.

Thanks, I've seen that before but didn't have it saved. I disagree with rating the Yugo worse than Chinese simply because some used Yugos have gas system corrosion from the Yugo ammo. There are good condition and bad condition models of both Chinese and Yugo. One fair criticism of the Yugo is the lack of a chromed barrel, although apparently chroming can cause slight accuracy decreases so this isn't entirely negative

Because even if you don't plan on selling it (assuming you never change your mind) you are still "destroying" a piece of history. Maybe one day your kid will inherit it or you will die and it will be sold. In the case of SKSs they aren't rare, but that still doesn't make it right, at least IMO. And I'm very new to /k/ so I'm not just following some sort of meme

Explain the historical significance of an SKS beyond it being an old mass-produced rifle that was quickly phased out of military service.
>>
>>32167162
Piece of history? It saw what? Six months service as a primary in the last weeks of WW2? Then a few commies in caves took pot shots at patrols? That's not history. That's abysmal. It's a good rifle but it did nothing.
>>
I believe they sure did a lot to our boys in Vietnam. I don't know where you get your history from, the back of a cereal box.

You could say the same thing about the Swiss K-31, which I don't think anyone would deny is historical. Also, the SKS was heavily used in Vietnam and Korea, as well as limited use in a million other conflicts.

The lack of rarity isn't a good excuse in my mind because people said the same thing about carrier pigeons too, and now they're all gone

Mostly I tell people not to because I bubba'd my SKS when I got it and it was terrible.

I had this idea in my head that I would get AK functionality out of it for less than I would've spent on an AK.

Instead what I got was a gun that, while checking all the same boxes on paper, was less functional, less ergonomical, and less reliable than either its factory configuration or the gun I was trying to turn it into, for the same price as the AK I actually wanted in the first place.

I'm MUCH happier with the SKS in original configuration than I was with my """upgraded""" gun and it was an expensive lesson, so I try to talk noobs out of making the same mistake whenever I can.

Duckbill mags are ugly and unreliable, often requiring you to take a dremel to your gun to get them to feed reliably. Most aftermarket furniture is ugly (ruins the lines of the gun) and completely ruins the balance of the gun by making it much more front-heavy.

The SKS's selling point is that it's a low-cost, reliable semiautomatic rifle in an intermediate caliber. When you Tapco the gun, you're diminishing the "low-cost" and "reliable" parts of the equation.

You do you but it's well-trod ground and people are simply trying to warn you off the same cycle many of them have already gone through.
>>
>>32167262
Did a lot? Of what? Even the Vietnamese peasants were primarily AK'd up. Stay salty all you want but the SKS never saw significant military use.
>>
>>32167293
All I'm planning on doing is changing the color of the furniture and adding a buttpad and peep sight, maybe lopping off the bayo lug and getting the barrel professionally shortened.
>>
>>32167291
>carrier pigeons
>existing ever

Yes anon, believe the envirojew who want to stop the world from hunting. Good goy.
>>
>>32167291
No, it didn't see heavy use. It saw use. That was the only conflict it ever really saw action. And millions of other conflicts? Yeah, people shoot it. The Glock sees action in "millions of conflicts" doesn't mean it has historical value.
>>32167293
I get where you are coming from. But I'm really not trying to change it all that much. Want to get the stock I posted above for a more comfortable shooting position (my wrists don't like rifle grips, prefer pistol). And 10 rounds is pretty small for a combat oriented rifle. Thought as much about the mags, but was curious. Will stick to trying for a Chinese 20 rounder.
>>

it's the only convincing argument for keeping the SKS ergonomically relevant, and it looks cool as fuck

>Buy the new furniture
>move the trigger group forward
>modify the magwell
>modify each individual mag

I guarantee with the cost of parts and upgrades he's well into the price range of a gun that does everything his "SK15" does, out of the box.

It's a cool concept but again, it's not worth it when SKSs are running $350 on the low end before shipping costs and transfer fees.

And there's the fact that we have no idea how reliability was affected by the changes he made.

Yes, because there aren't multitudes of sources that describe passenger pidgeons. And no species have ever suffered from overhunting. Definitely not the American and European bison, or Tasmanian tiger and Carribean monk seal which weren't affected by hunting at all.

I'm not against hunting at all and I hunt, what I do oppose is overhunting.

Just ordered a 1950s Russian on a black Friday sale, 190 bucks Canadian. They were completely sold out in stores (Cabelas), but they still had them online for the same price. Is it a huge deal that I didn't visually inspect it? I'm a total noob and it's my first gun, so I wouldn't have really known what to look for anyways, besides a chromed barrel, and nice furniture. Also ordered 1500 rounds of 1980s surplus Russian x39 for 300 bucks.
>>
>>32167040
Just get your RPAL. Easier to do it all at once, if you're 21 or over.

Also an SKS is the absolute best bang for your buck that you'll find. Good to scoop one up before they're gone.
>>
>>32169477
There are a lot of videos on youtube on how to buy an SKS or a used rifle. Mainly you want to check the bore for wear, pitting or erosion
>>
>>32168536
I ordered some from NcSTAR from Ebay. I hope they turn out to be good
>>
>>32169727
Do you not know their quality and are hoping that they're worth it, or are you hoping to get the few that are actually decent?
>>
>>32169748
There isn't much in the way of surplus clips on the market, so you don't have too much of a choice. If they don't work out of the box, there are youtube videos on how to fix/break them in
>>
>>32169748
I've heard they're a good brand, but it's possible to get a few bad ones. Really just hoping they come out better than the clips I have already haha.

But I'm confident that they will be good.

Why the fuck doesn't Winchester list the super-x slugs I have on their website?

http://www.winchester.com/Products/shotshell-ammunition/Performance/Super-X-Shotshell/Pages/X123RS15.aspx

12 gauge, 3", 1 oz, slugs, not hollow point. "X" formed into the nose of the slug instead, not sure if it's rifled... Shell says "Super-X" on the side though.

they apparently don't make this in a non-hollowpoint version?
>>
>>32158934
No guns,
Serious question, looking to buy one of these, how fast will I go through the ammo? If I buy 1000 rounds how many days of shooting would that be?

Is it standard to shoot 50-100 rounds in an afternoon?
>>
>>32175656

Depends how youre shooting

if youre doing 3-5 round groups and checking for accuracy, you gotta factor the time it takes to walk up check/patch your target and walk back, plus loading and set up.

if youre just blasting away not caring so much about accuracy then your rounds will go significantly faster.

generally when I shoot for zero and a few round for fun on my semis I blast something like 70-100 in a day and I think thats quite a bit.

get an sks with 1000~ cheap surplus and start slow. ammo is cheap enough you can abuse it a little, good training just make sure to put in effort and clean yo gat after if using corrosive
