This is the Maverick 88 shotgun from Mossberg. There have been a lot questions about it here on /k/. So, I went out and bought one, mostly just to have one and also to answer questions about it. So, the first question that comes up, since it’s a sub $200 shotgun, is asking if this thing is junk. The quick answer. No, it’s not junk. It’s quite the deal.
Mossberg calls this shotgun the working man’s gun, and that it is. It’s not fancy, it’s not some trophy, it’s just a well built defensive shotgun that’s sold in big box stores sort of the way Sears had its own line of Sears shotguns back in the 60’s. I got mine at Dick’s for $180.
This gun shoots just fine. It works. It’s a gun you could probably use, in a pinch, to bird gun. The lack of the ability to twist in chokes means it’s a fixed pattern. Certainly you use buck shot and maybe get some bigger game. But, where this gun excels is in defensives uses.
The barrel is 18.5” right near the minimum of legal. With the standard stock, this is a gun that can still be maneuvered in a hallway or doorway. There is a decent and growing aftermarket for this gun, so you’re not stuck with the stock and can put on a folder or pistol grip. There are many generic parts that can also enhance the gun.
As for how it functions, it works. The action is smooth with no notches are sticking points. The shell feed and ejected every time. It went bang when I squeezed the trigger. Now, I didn’t do a 400,000 round test. This is a gun that you might shoot a few dozen rounds through a year for fun before putting the defensive loads back in and putting this gun back at the ready in your home
So, should you buy this gun? Yes. If it’s a first gun for home defense, you’ll be happy. If it’s a fun gun for doing 360º no scope moves out on the farm, yes, buy it. There isn’t really a way you can go wrong with this gun at this price.

Can you kill yourself?

Can I? Certainly, using any one of about 100 different methods. Will I? Nope!

what do you think of the finish? Thinking of buying one to keep locked in a lockbox in my truck just cuz. Just sorta worried about rust issues.

Sometimes cheap guns are the most fun, you don't care about them as much. You don't worry about using them, the niks, scratches, and dings that come with really using a gun. These cheap-o-matics are something you brag about, or pass down to your grand kids. They are guns you use, abuse, have fun with.

I could see rust being an issue if the gun is put away wet or stored in a really high humidity environment. But, this is a smooth barrel shotgun. Barrel rust isn't nearly as much of a concern as it would be a rifled barrel. I think it's easy enough to wipe down from time to time and prevent rust.
Have one that I got years ago for 90 at a show, fantastic gun.
Can you change magazine capacity if you got the 6 shot model? Can the barrel be swapped out easily for different lengths?

Maybe on a tube extension. Yes on the barrel.

Every time a gun gets cold enough overnight that it's below dewpoint when moist warm air gets to it the next day in a truck box, it will get water all over it, unless you keep it in a silicon sock that you keep well siliconed. But it has to be dry when you put it in the sock. It can be a mess either way depending on your weather.
