I've always wondered how you get into olympic shooting. I've always been told that I was a great shot despite lack of practice and that I should get involved in it, but I don't have the money or the knowledge of where to even begin with it. The "guns" they use are pretty expensive for a decent one.

>>
>>32146995
I guess same as any other olympic level discipline, minus most of the body harm that comes from phisically intensive sports like running, where you burn yourself in the early 20s and anything after that is a downhill slope because your body cannot take it.

So pretty much practice 24/7, afford to practice 24/7, do all the competitions you can possibly reach and win them. Nothing magic about it, just completely forget about your personal life for a while.

I have a cousin that was nearly getting into world-tier artistic roller skating (which is the same as olympics tier, as artistic roller skating has no olympics), he was doing really good but gave up in his early 20s as he could not take the pressure anymore. When you reach that competitive level you either commit 150% or fuck off - he had no life anymore, he had to keep practicing even with broken bones if they weren't necessary for skating, when he wasn't practicing he had to win competitions.
>>
>>32147090
>Not him, but I assume it's all the gadgets and gizmos and things to make shooting easier, thus reducing the need for actual skill.
well gee i wonder why all those rich fellas interested in shooting don't dump a bunch of money into olympic biathlon gear and get the gold medals all the time.
its not like you need actual skill or training or fitness or the discipline to maintain all that for years on end.

The tech behind it is made to have a higher skill ceiling, not to reduce it.
Nobody gives a shit for how accurate you can shoot with your run of the mill "match" ammo and hunting rifles, olympics and high level sports in general are about the best a man can do, the rifle is just a tool and should be as irrelevant as possible.

A chef cooking with the best stoves and knives is less skilled, by your reasoning.
>>
>>32147288
FUCKED IN THAT BOOTY
>>
>>32147294
I think you missed his point dude. Its not about lowering the skill ceiling, its raising rhe skill floor. The way these rifles are setup is to remove any possible error or guesswork on part of the shooter.
>>

I don't have a personal life, really. The thing I lack is money and connections.

>>

they make a lot less than that. There is not much sponsorship for the shooting sports and the event winnings are little. USA shooting pays olympic shooters a small training stipend, less than $800/mo. That means in addition to all the training you have to figure out a way to work a full time or decent paying part time job while asking for family or community support.
>>
>>32146995
>The "guns" they use are pretty expensive for a decent one.

As someone who's done high level sport shooing, the gear will only get you the last <2% after you're perfect. Just get a 22 rifle and practice. It's a big mistake to go gear queer before you're good.

the way you get into competitions is that you kinda just show up and talk to people there, and find out from them what sort of basic equipment you'll need and then just start competing.
while not an olympic competion, I got into high-power competition about 5 years ago after a co-worker invited me to a match. I showed up with my garand, a $25 shooting mat from midway, and a spotting scope. that's it. I shot like dogshit that first match, but it doesn't matter because you only learn this stuff by doing it. 5 years later and I'm finally starting to win matches shooting vintage rifle class, having slowly upgraded my skills and equipment as I went along.

long story short is that you just have to find local matches, show up, talk to people, and participate. don't let yourself be intimidated by all the fancy guns and equipment you see other people using, all that can come later once you've developed as a shooter to where that actually makes a difference.
>>
>>32147691
>It's a big mistake to go gear queer before you're good.
This applies to literally everything
>>
>>32147614

The only ones that are making anywhere close to that much are doing so because of individual sponsorships. aka, as models, not athletes.

We're talking about olympics and medals. There isn't much money in three gun. Maybe you missed the FN just folded its pro team.

But, if you want to talk about non-olympic style shooting. The U.S. women are dominant. The only female IPSC USPSA GM is an American.

and even that would be top-of-the-line rifles, you can find very decent used rifles for closer to $1k

You should do some more shopping for a serious competition gun. One of the clubs I a member of just spent $6k on a gun for one of our juniors who shows some international level promise. Trap shotguns can easily hit 25K or more.

nothing wrong with starting with something inexpensive in my opinion, it doesn't really matter so long as it's a reasonably accurate bolt action with good aperature sights. even something like my old mossberg here would be fine to get you started, you can always upgrade later once you've learned more about what you like and what you'll need

Pretty sure this thread just confirms most of /k/ is just a different type of fudd. Just because these people aren't shooting AR15's at tin cans in a quarry it means they are shit shots.
They have gadgets and gizmos to take out machine error, which leaves it to the skill of the shooter. They aren't after 3' groups at 25yards as their zero like you cunts, they are shooting the same hole over and over again every single time, against someone who is doing the same.

It's not exactly true. Women can be just as good as men when shooting, because it's not that difficult unless you're shooting a machinegun offhand or a stopping rifle. Women were recruited as snipers in WWII because they could blend in with local populations and just be written off as innocent farmgirls if they were spotted snooping around villages on the front.
>>
>>32162548
Good to know. I figured i just have shitty luck with girls. Still do but eh, im tryin to work on it.

>>32162556
I thought that was because all the men were already conscripted and russia still needed more bodies

Women have better vision, dunno if that actually affects much

because horses are a major commitment that consume almost all of one's free time to maintain.

Man's got a point.
>>
>>32162829
Women have different vision, it's not precisely better.

They'll have an easier time discerning a stationary target, while men have an easier time tracking and noticing movement. But those are generalizations, because it's a signal processing difference, not a physical hardware difference.
>>
>>32163005
men have better night vision and women have better color vision too

> he thinks F1 is bleeding edge.
F1 is not bleeding edge technology wise. If it were we would see much more deaths in the motorsport, it's the reason Group B was shut down, because the cars were becoming too fast for the drivers.
>>
>>32163117
But modern rallycars put up faster times rhan group b ever did. I dont see how having less deaths in motorsports is a bad thing

I guess that's why nothing lost used to get found in my house until my Mom started looking for it
>>

>Women were recruited as snipers in WWII
As propaganda trick. Snipers are most overblown and proofless branch. (not like they can't do good but you can effortlessly inflate thier performance due to the nature of sniper's battle damage assessment)
>>
>>32163720
No, that's because you're mom kept your house clean.

Seriously. Sweep your floor once in a while.
>>
>>32163084
How the fuck you figure that? Men are much more likely to have color "blindness" than women.

Cite a scientific study, you fucking child.
>>
>>32148046
Same reason the womens football team does so well, America is one of the only places that pretends women can be athletes so they face an extremely shallow talent pool when compared to the men

Its a big fish tiny pool thing

Im never gonna be in the olympics but it looks fun
>>
>>32165751
If you live in an area that would be conducive to skiing and shooting then start googling for biathlon clubs in your area. Or maybe by state, like Washington state biathlon or something. Either way, google is probably a good start for finding amateur biathlon clubs or events.

Some women are tetrachromates but that is uncommon. Not sure what other range variations there are.

Some can see outside the normal range, a little into infrared (non-thermal, to be clear). All I have heard of were men but that might have been a selection bias.

I'm not too familiar with this type of action; would it be sensible on larger calibers, or would the longer pull be too much of a hassle?
>>
>>32170424
I dont think it would work for anythi g much larger. Besides the throw being too long i want to say these cant handle a lot of pressure due to how it locks up. We had a thread a couple months back about some guy trying to make one in 9mm and it was a huge hassle
