What was the best AK variant?

VEPR.
Though it's really more of an RPK.

Anything Valmet.

The Century C39(milled) is top notch. RAS47 is good too.

Either you're a troll, or you're one hell of a newfag.
The C39v2 is serviceable. RAS47's will literally explode because of shitty cast trunnions, and that's not even taking into account the legendary Century quality control.

The Czech make ones. Absolutely lovely things. Made The assembly easier to replace. And it's actually a little more at accurate at 400 yards than a Russian AK.

Milled Valmets and Galils.
Milled Valmet build strength is nothing short of legendary. Very accurate guns also.
If we talk about what's available right now, AKs made by Kalash Concern, Molot and Arsenal are the top.
I would say they are top guns in general.

these + SAKO RK-95.

well the serbian guns are more accurate than the classic design due to a lack of (i think) the chrome lined barrel or something. But they require more cleaning. As far as classic wooden AKs go, it surely is top dog.

I like the grenade sights on the Zastavas. I've read they had to make them a bit chunkier than standard AK pattern rifles due to the rifle grenade pressures.
Valmet/SAKO. The only correct answer.

I'm looking to buy either a vepr or arsenal id like this answered too, I have 4000 to spare.

Objectively? Probably an ak-74 style with either a fixed or polymer folder stock.
I lean towards a fixed stock being best, because sling points of folders are shit and AK folders aren't that handy anyway. You can't just rock it out and be firing in under a second like with a vz58 or something.

It'll handle abuse better, but literally nobody does that except eric when he torture tests. Accuracy differences will be practically unnoticeable, and undone by the weight difference making offhand shooting worse.
Weight differences will be very noticeable, with the vepr being heavier. The barrel on my 223 vepr is thicker than any of my other long guns, excluding shotguns.
