Different guy here.

Granted, this shit didn't really exist back when I was in (non-issued boots were just getting started and I deployed in woodland camo because we didn't even have full desert shit yet beyond one pair of DCU's with the elvis collar), but nobody really gave a shit.

My PSG would occasionally wear jeans on patrol because our optempo was high enough all 4 pairs of his BDU's were still full of clay. Nobody else brought civvies forward (they stayed in our B-bags in the ISU90 that was still on a truck parked in Kuwait) but I'm 100% sure we could've worn pretty much whatever.

>>32139772
Take better care of your clothes?
Maybe slow down on the weight gain?
Wash your clothes properly?

I'm 33. I still have walmart brand walmart shirts from when I was in high school, and they still fit and look okay (not gonna pretend they look brand new, but I avoid black and bright colors anyway so they still look passable).

There IS something to be said for buying quality, but for everyday wear clothing there's a sweet spot before you hit diminishing returns (like most things).
>>
>>32139681

>>32139681

>thinking investing 1k -2k in comfortable clothing that will last a life time is a bad.
>hoards thousands of rounds of ammo and buy cheap clothing from walmart that break apart every year.

I bought nothing but arcteryx for 6 years running, i think it has saved me alot of money on clothing in the long run. some of the shirts i bought for 6 years now and are good as new, the old t-shirts I bought from costco were stretched/unwearable after a year or so. I literally only have 3 pair of pants that I have worn for 5+ years and i expect them to easily last another 10-20. You pay for quality. Poor people are stuck pay a lot for things they think are cheap, but cost more in the long run because they break.

>One of the biggest names in outdoor equipment
Really?

I really wouldn't consider that one of the big names. It's price is what keeps it from being accessible to most people.
Big outdoor brand names would be:
Outdoor research
North Face
Marmot
Patagonia
Colombia
REI
Smartwool
Etc...

Its like fjallraven, the price keeps it from being popular. Its more of a professional level brand.
>>
>>32139592
>Outdoor equipment is a racket.
The higher the price the better the gear.

You can grantee that if its a decent brand the gear will be lighter, stronger, and more comfy the higher the price. Luckily you can't perpetuate a meme very long in that market if the product doesn't work
>>
>>32139960
>fjallraven

For me I use Tide Free n' Clear. But yeah, inside out in cold water, tumble dry low or hang-dry delicates (literally what male has "delicates"?)

>>32139960
I wouldn't call North Face, Columbia, or Marmot "outdoor brand names" any more. They've nearly completely ceased producing anything other than school bags and fashion coats.

>>
>>32140009
There are 2 sides to North Face
The fag-normie-highschool/college-frat clothing side
And the side that makes actual gear

I have some good pants from North face that have held up really well and some of their bags and stuff are good, but a lot of it is fashion garbage.

Just because its a big brand doesn't mean its decent.

I consider colombia, north face, partly patagonia, and most recently kuhl to be sellouts to good outdoor gear. They gave up making quality gear to produce popular clothing with an outdoor flair.
>>
>>32140042
Best part is, it saves money.
>cold water
Probably saves me around $150 a year in electricity with a relatively modern, Energy Star Gold washer, will save more with either bigger washers or non-ES models.
>dry low
Most people overdry by a LOT. Which, on top of costing money, is hard on clothing and builds up a shitload of static.

Also, you can probably use about half as much detergent as you currently are and not notice a difference in how clean things get. Less, if you're willing to spend the time to pre-treat anything with visible stains or hose off stuff with actual mud/dirt on it with a garden hose.

And clean your dryer vent every year, a bent coat-hanger and 20mins-1 hour once a year will both improve safety (significantly lowered risk of house fire) and increase drying efficiency some.

I bought some milsurp from a guy that smoked like a chimney in his store and I haven't needed to buy anything since then. "The higher the price the better" is some serious capitalist garbage. I'm all for buying quality, but it doesn't need a logo attached which costs +50%.
>>

You're not the type arcteryx caters to. You're too poor and not hardcore enough. Just stay in your pleb corner.
>>
>>32140325

I'm outside everyday putting my stuff through rough conditions. I just want something that works and will last me a long time, and also doesn't cost $100+ for a logo.

If you're doing work in milsurp, which is what you're doing since I'm assuming you're not "putting your stuff through rough conditions" everyday in the backcountry, then I would suggest some higher quality work clothes.

Duluth trading makes fucking god tier clothing and they don't have a high markup from brand name. A little cheaper than carhartt with superior quality.
>>
>>32140342

>>

I'll disagree on the OR.

OR makes very durable, VERY waterproof stuff. But it weighs a ton. Yes, it's cheaper than dedburd, but it weighs 2-3x as much while being no more durable.
>>
>>32140463

I mostly wear milsurp pants and the shirts you get at Walmart in a four pack.
>>
>all these people defending their precious overpriced meme gear
If it doesn't perform significantly better than the half-price or less alternatives, I'm not paying nearly so much. For how much I'll use it, I have much better things to spend my money on. It's not about being poor, it's about making good choices with money. It's like gucci ARs or buying a gucci handbag. It's bought more for the social factor and conspicuous consumption rather than a rational decision about return on investment.

>>32140575

I haven't been involved in this argument, but I do have to say that you are pretty misguided if you do not think this is how most things work in a free market. Name brands wouldn't be a thing if recognition didn't net more sales. It's capitalism at work.

In other words, take your "each according to his need" version of goods and shove it up your Communist ass.
>>
>>32140671
It's your money to waste, not mine. I just think you are a character-deficient retard if you try to use brands to build your sense of self.
>>
>>32140666
Not that guy but you're missing the point. Arcteryx has an excellent rep in the professional community because it's bomber gear, yes it's expensive, but some guys do buy it because their life actually could depend on it.
>>
>>32134339
at least try to not sound like you hate it because you can't afford it.
>>
>>32140653
do you honestly think arc'teryx is the best mountaineering gear?
>>
>>32140666

Not the point Satan. The point is that they are expensive because they are good

Why buy a Porsche 911 turbo when you can buy a Honda Civic? Because you aren't going to inspire envy/lust and destroy a Lambo at the track in a civic.

Why arcteryx instead of a milsurp? Because I could climb Everest, chug round in war zone like an operator, survive SHF or go on vacation all being comfy as fuck.

But your right, go enjoy your clothing made out of tent and Honda Civic
>>
>>32140782
Fair enough comparison, but you ignore the middle ground and the point of diminishing returns. I suppose as people want to spend more money they slide further up the price/return scale. The question is of the personal value that someone puts on any given thing. If I had the same feeling about firearms in general I would have bought a glock and a modern but not gucci AR-15 and called it a day. It would be serviceable for the vast majority of situations but not be "top end". If you enjoy collecting clothes like I enjoy collecting guns, more power to you.
>>
>>32140227
Lol k
>>
>>32140837

Well, on diminishing returns there is also practically. Realistically you aren't going to be doing much more than shooting paper with your guns. But the clothing you can use for everything. Say you get a scar-17s with acog and a hk45 and a couple of thousand rounds of ammo. That whole thing costs like 10k and you won't need to buy any other guns for the next 10 years. That's just not a lot of money to lots of people. Most kitchen renovations cost 20-30k

I really like the look of their clothes, but I could get a sickening scope for the price of one pair of pants and a jacket from them, so I'd probably need to try it on to see if I'd feel like it'd be worth it before buying that instead.

honestly i would say Carhardt used to be the top innawoods gear, other than hunting gear on /k/.
>>
>>32145357
Carhartt is great, but tends to be a bit heavy for hiking and backpacking and moving light.

as heavy-duty workwear, there's nothing better. As innawoods/combat gear, you can get better for the same money
>>
>>32139043
This was such a comfy episode.
>>
>>32139161
What kind of jacket is this?
>>
>>32145357
Carhartt is made really well and the stuff is very durable and pretty cheap but its sizing is made for amerifats

A small is the same as a large from something like Marmot

Sucks
I have a couple Carhartt hoodies that I wanna use a lot but theyre all uncomfortable because of how baggy they are

black diamond, marmot, rab, all that common shit in places like EMS, REI is fine, back country used to have a in house brand called stoic that was cheap and really good

the only people I've ever seen wear arcteryx was when i lived in san francisco and hipsters would wear 1000 dollar rain coats walking to their audis

I have three arcteryx jackets, plus one of their harnesses (and a chalk bag too) and they have all served me exceptionally well. I'm never uncomfortable regardless of the weather. High efficiency and low weight, being a premium for climbing, it's no wonder so many people use arcteryx as their go to brand for the mountains. All of my arcteryx gear easily compacts small for easy transport. I definitely see myself expanding my arcteryx quiver in the future. Planning on getting some approach shoes from them, as a matter of fact. Very satisfied with arcteryx.

Also I have never paid full price for any of my arcteryx gear too. Everything I got at around 30-40% off.

Oh, and their customer service is phenomenal.
>>
>>32149921

I'm not him, but gorkas are great for comfort. The standing advice is to go a size larger than you are so you have the space for warm underclothes.

hey famalam, former outdoor guide here

Arcy and patagucci have held up the best, would not get another softshell or rain shell from anyone else

generic goretex and marmot hit the budget sweet spot

pearl izumi, smartwool, and melanzana are great technical layers

the nut and tnf are hit or miss, cheap shit is great and comfy, high end technical stuff is good, but don't waste your time. just get the outlet fleece and button downs and call it a day.

outdoor research is go to for climbing pants and gloves, and sweet beanies. black diamond is most of my technical gear. for the river its hurley drifit pants or any decent surf brand walkshorts. sandals are preference, I have tevas. chacos are a meme.

surp is love/hate for me. I held onto my M65, nomex, but wouldn't operate in em. only thing that sees regular use is brit mtp pants, because fucking comfy.

Probably. I'm broke so I don't spend too much on clothing--Hell the most I've ever spent was pretty recently for discounted jackets at Ross--an interchangeable jackeet/sweater combo. Bought a Columbia, pics will come later if anyone asks since I gotta head out.
