Went to the local gun show just to browse maybe find some cheap ammo/mags. See a beautiful (but worn) C96 for 600$. Ask to play with it. Barrel is almost a smooth bore with how worn it is, but it's a cool gun. Ask if he will take 500$. First broomhandle I have ever owned.so /K/ how did I do? What have you bought recently?

Do the numbers match? Is the stamping clear or does it look refinished (they look pretty crisp in the first photo)?

If it's non-matching, given the condition and the bore, $600 seems right.
>>
>>32129036
>I will restore
Why; it looks fine.
>>
Traded in a counterbored non-matching 91/30 with mild feeding issues and no original buttplate plus $100 for a fresh out of the crate yugo sks with bayonet and strap. He told me a tapco 30 round sks mag and 40 rounds with stripper clips as well for like $40. I feel like I kinda got gypped on the magazine but oh well, I think the SKS was a good deal overall. A yugo was the first rifle I ever owned or fired and we traded it years ago for a shotgun, I missed it so much and couldn't pass up the deal.

Got a spas 12 for shits and giggs a few weeks ago. Not the folding stock model, but it was the only one within practical distance and I still had to drive 3 hours on a Thursday night each way to get it. Paid 1100, I think I did pretty good. Came with the updated crossbolt safety and the original sling, so that's nice I guess.
>>
>>32129699
Motherfucking meme magician. Play with it yet?
>>
>>32129278
Look at the back of it. The frame, bolt, and hammer should all be numbered. Look at the left side of the barrel, it should be numbered. Open the bolt and look at the follower, it'll have a number. Look at the top of the bolt stop. It's numbered. Finally check this vid:

https://youtu.be/M7Y1dAtQXug

It will tell you how to get out the lockwork, which will have a number, and the floorplate, which will have a number.

Finally, the inside of the grips will be numbered, too.

If they don't match, don't sweat it much. If it's still a good shooter, that's the important part (to you).

Oh hey cool.

So I worked all Thanksgiving for the most part and went over my fiances families house after my shift in the OR.
She's a Vietnamese-Korean (Yeah) mix, her family hates filthy commies and listing to the two sides bicker is amazing, but that's just fluff.
Her uncle is a really distant, really quiet guy. He was AVRN and then a member of-probably, the RVNP special police/Intelligence or the VIP protection service. He moved here just before the fall of Vietnam.
Me and him sat on the back porch and shot the shit while drinking brandy. He's an old man now. Hes loosing his eyesight and his hands are starting to go. He has difficulty using a fork and knife anymore. Says he hasnt shot a gun since Bush the youngers first term. He was asking me a bunch of medical questions and I was being as Frank as I could with him about what he could expect in the next few years from his Parkinsons and glocoma.
He reached into his jacket, handed me this, and said "I want you to keep it".

Guys, this thing is in immaculate fucking condition for the most part. He said he carried it all through the 60s and 70s, and that he knew I'd get a good bit of joy out of it.

You're a good man Trong.

You have to have the shit lined up just right and locked together and a slight bump can make it disassemble itself.
When I took mine apart to clean and replace the broken firing pin, it was a royal pain in the ass.

I'm thinking about sending the upper in to get the barrel sleeved as the bore is a sewer pipe and bullets keyhole so the accuracy is minute of barn at 10 feet.

I took the lockwork on mine apart to try to diagnose an issue with it not going into battery consistently after loading. It wasn't all that bad. Putting the plunger and rocker thing back in was the only part where I felt like it was going to burst apart with a cartoon-esque "SPROINGGG". It was an intimidating prospect, but after I did it I realized it wasn't really all that.

Nice man. That's chambered in 9mm luger, right? I was *this* close to getting a decent condition Astra 400 a few months ago. Guy wanted $300ish for it.

I couldn't justify it though because I could never get a straight answer (online or in gun stores) as to whether it was safe to shoot 9mm Luger out of a 9mm Largo Astra 400.

Some say it's fine, others say you're going to fuck the whole gun up.

And Largo ammo is not easy to find, nor is it cheap. so i passed.
>>
>>32128931
As with any C96 you're looking to buy, look at the bolt stop and make sure that it's straight. A lot of these guns came from China, and about the time 7.63 Mauser ammo got scarce 7.62 Tok ammo didn't.

I had a Vz.70 about ten years ago. It was one of two guns of mine that were stolen. Eventually I replaced it with a Vz.50. The finish and grips are much nicer on the 50 but the metallurgy is better on the 70. I don't shoot my Vz.50 much these days, though.

Oh nice, man. The one thing that bugs me most about this gun is the big interarms importer stamp on the frame (above the trigger guard). I wish they had put that somewhere else, or made the stamp smaller or something.

And yeah the grips are bad. I just purchased some nice Marschal grips to replace these hideous black plastic ones.

You didn't just accept a gift and soothe the aching heart of an old man, you probably put him at ease. It's quite possible he's thought about sticking the front sight into the roof of his mouth.

You should make it a point to share a drink with him every year. Give him something to look forward to, you know? Not saying that his family doesn't, but new friends are nice when you're older.
>>
>>32132935
man you can shoot .38 super out of a largo chamber
>>
>>32133540

I though I had read that you can only feed .38 special/super if the Astra 400 in question was marked as such. If it just says 9mm, then it can only take Largo (and maybe Luger, according to some people).

But then i'd read that .38 super was too high pressure for a gun from the 1920s.

I dunno if any of that is true, but I just could not get a straight answer about that fukkin gun.

I paid $900 for mine and the safety is bent so it just flops around, also sometimes if I'm not careful the frame will sip out when firing it probably due to me removing the safety, other than that it fails to feed sometimes but it sill shoots good.
>>
>>32133600
They started marking them as such because they found out that users found out 'hey this shit works'
that's whey they were marked 9/.38
9mm largo=/= 9mm luger
luger has a tapered case and largo is like a lengthened .380 case, no taper

>>
>>32133966
No I think 200 is the going price for a Mosin right now. Even cabelas has them for 250.
>>
>>32132935
With the design you could probably get away with shooting para out of a Largo gun.
They have extremely early ejection running normally anyway, so at worst you will get short strokes.
>>
>>32133966
In my opinion Mosins aren't worth more than 150 or 200$
Once you start getting in the 300$ range the door opens to SMLEs, Schmidt Rubins, and non-German Mausers, even cheaper production rifles. Mosin is fun but a total piece of shit, might as well get something nice for the money.

I recently acquired a Red 9. I have a few questions and maybe you guys can help me.

-When I pull the hammer back it stays cocked, when I pull on it again, it drops, I had an ND because of it.
-Gun had a burst fire because of above issue
-Gun does not lock open when empty.
-Gun stops after every shot
-Magazine only holds 8 rounds, I believed it was supposed to hold 10

Any input is appreciated on how to get back in working order.

>does not lock open when empty
Weak mag spring most likely. But...
>mag only holds 8 rounds
This is mysterious. What does the spring look like?

Have you ever taken a close look at the lockwork? That's where your hammer issue is going to be. See if it's loose in there or the safety isn't fit right or something of that sort. Mine were completely gummed with old grease when I took it apart.

The receivers are garbage, but it's more that National Ordnance rifles were put together by monkeys that make Century builds look competent. Make sure to check the headspace before firing it.

What are you going to do when the EMP hits?
>>
>>32134798
That is entirely my plan. As a backup I also plan on getting a 1903-A3 receiver, either a blank or fully functional.

Use the manual key underneath, probably.

If you want to do anything permanent just stain the stock and hand guard to match. Metal looks good, all matching #s, don't fucking with it much. Maybe some MOJO sights as those are not a permanent modification. They Would make better sights for hunting that's for sure. Maybe a slip on recoil pad to help with length of pull if you need it.

If you hunt with it, handload or find some good ammo. Most 8mm in USA is under pressured because there are two types of 8mm and they don't want people to blow themselves up. Use good surplus, Hornaday makes a full pressure 8mm load I believe it's called classic match using the 196 grain. Or reload using 196 grain nosler partition. Sights are probably calibrated for 196, though if you get MOJO sights it won't matter.

Nothing wrong with some other weights, I'm just partial to the 196. Just make sure your ammo is full pressure. If you're going bear hunting you may want some heavier bullets.

If you do want to work on a Mauser as a hunting rifle you could ream out the chamber to 8mm-06. Or go to something like 9.3x57. Lots of options. Probably best to buy an old Husqvarna Mauser if you want a true 8mm factory Mauser sporter. Other calibers too. Check Simpsons for those.

Nicely done...I have a similar story about how I acquired my M1921 "Bolo" C96. Mine has a smooth bore as well, but it shoot well enough after I replaced the springs.
>>
>>32134422
Wow that's a good looking rifle, my kinda rifle too. Local pawn shop or something? What's the length on that barrel? Power on the scope? Beautiful wood on that rifle.
>>
has anyone ever re-manufactured the broomhandle? I would think it would be a fun gun to own just for the fact that there is only one screw holding the gun together and all the internal parts are interlocking. It would be a nice puzzle to take apart and put back together.
>>
>>32128931
Re-sleeve the barrel for like $100 and you'll be golden
>>
>>32135102
The market won't support what it would cost to make them today. Collectors won't pay a premium for a reproduction when originals are only fetching $1-2k and non-collectors won't shell out that kind of cash for a novelty.

Starting last year the electronic locks have an emp resistance certification. I can't say for sure how much they can take and survive, but nobody seems very worried about it.
>>
goddamnit, i've been looking for another one all year, everyone here wants 800 for the same shit
>>
>>32128931
That's one thing I've wanted for a while. That and the Mauser 1871.
>>
>>32135020

20 inch barrel. Don't know the magnification on the scope. It was probably bought and mounted on the rifle when it was bought originally. It's pretty damn old.

I have that model but Cabela's branded. I love it. I have 40 guns in it with tons of room for more.

If you think I bought it to shoot 3 gun and be a mall ninja, you're stupid. It's a collectible and extremely cool gun.

Croatia is wank. Buy the gun instead

It's 200, and I might
>>

Honestly you'd still be ahead of the game for that price.
>>
>>32130277
Less of a hassle when you're using it and a criminal who wants to get in will use brute force (either prying the door off or cutting through it) and not fancy safe cracking techniques.

>>32134811
They all have back up locks that you simply use a key to open underneath.

>>32133197
How much muzzle flip does it have compared to other handguns you've shot?
>>
>>32136490
None really. Mostly because of the round. Is surprisingly heavy for such a small pistol.
>>
>>32130183
Holy shit, that looks like it rolled off the factory line last week.

is that the 6 round or 8 round version?

Have you ever shot a pistol chambered in .22lr to compare it to?
>>
>>32136742
Yes. It has more recoil than a .22LR. Then again, the .22LR pistol I shoot most often is my Beretta Neos with the 6" barrel.
>>
>>32136050
Damn, life goals. I only have 6 long guns and 3 hand guns at the moment but I'll inherit that many again from my grandfather some day. Most of my guns aren't terribly valuable, $800 or less, but I have $2,400 in my AR and one of the shotguns my grandfather is giving me is worth $6,000. That alone is reason enough to buy a decent safe, but with the burglaries that started happening in my area the past couple of months it really pushed me to go for it.
>>
>>32136531
They aren't gonna use a beater for their demo vid. Especially since they supply new manufacture parts.
>>
>>32137329
I've been collecting guns since I got my first rifle (SKS) as a kid. We had .22's that were family guns but that was the first one specifically mine. Since then it has been about making the right trades or buying at the right time. During the sandy hook scare I bought ban proof guns and sold my AR. After that simmered down deals like the $400 vz-2008's with bayonet/5 mags/cleaning kit/sling came up and I bought two.

It's not about what your collection is worth. It's what you paid.
>>
>>32134938
thank you so much for showing me MOJO sights. I really needed these for my mauser

On one hand, Taurus, on the other, good price.
>>
>>32144774
Be at ease, friend. Taurus bought Berettas Brazil plant that manufactured the classic '92. Even kept the same workers. Essentially, the PT92 is a Beretta 92 with taurus' name on it.

True, that.
Fucking-A. I never thought I'd fall in love with a Taurus, of all things... The more I fiddle with it, the more I like it. Heading to the range, now. I'll report back shortly.

Noguns here.

I just moved back to the states from yurop, so I want to become hazguns. Recently walked into a local store and saw a mossberg 500 for $170. Obviously it's used. I don't know whether to buy it or not. Anyone got ideas on what to look for? It's a family owned place so I doubt they're super shady, but that price is suspiciously low. Or is it?
>>
>>32146121

Buying a Russian SKS from another anon on here for $500. He's throwing in 120 rounds, 11 stripper clips, and a 20 round tapco mag for free. Am I getting a nice deal?
>>
>>32147318
Well, they aren't getting any cheaper, and that particular gun looks in good condition. I bought mine before Sandy hook, and for $300, which was a good price then. Take from that what you will.

>>32144386
I mean it looks like hot trash. Probably shoots like ass but $200 is $200

$300 was a fantastic deal for a Russian SKS for years before Sandy Hook
Yugos were $300-$350 around that time

Bought a 950bs Jetfire at a gun show. Don't have pics but envision in your mind an aged matte blue finish with no visible wear or scratches. $250
>>
>>32134315
do you have the proper tax stamp for that assault cat?
>>
>>32150462
I should have clarified that I bought a Chinese type 56 SKS. Numbers matched, jianshe arsenal, manufacture date in 1970.
It is definitely less of a deal than a Russian for that price, but it's still an SKS.
