The kits aren't as easy to find anymore but the Cobray/Leinad derringer kits are easy peasy to put together. Hand tools and if you really want to be a moon cricket, JB Weld will do. Tube SMG's too but those are illegal in the States.

I've done a polymer AR lower (which i used a .22LR upper for it) using a hand drill. It can be done.

Stens are famous for their ability to be constructed out of basic shops with scrap materials you have laying around. They're a pretty cool project if you're looking into that sort of thing.

Back in the day -- late 90s -- several folks in the old pole barn at Knob Creek -- Serbu and several of the nfalist regulars come to mind -- were selling paper tubes. Wrap paper tube over a metal tube, drill / cut as marked. InstaSTEN.

You can still buy Sten tubes with all of the necessary cutouts and holes marked. You just can't build it to be a full auto open bolt if you want your dog to see the end of the week. The semi auto parts aren't exactly cheap, which is the main reason I've steered away from building a table leg with horrible ergos that shoots lol9mm.

Unless you have an absolute fascination with the gun, a semi auto Sten is kind of dumb in my opinion.

i built a full auto uzi before, it was pretty easy.

just get a already welded up uzi receiver and trim down the restrictor ring and cut out the blocking bar and trim the holes for the sear a little more to fit then assemble it like a normal uzi, then go shoot it full auto.

i built a FAL before, it was a pain in the ass to get the barrel onto the new receiver and the parts are really expensive.

you need a monster vise and the special barrel block and receiver wrench to do it and a really long breaker bar and torq wrench (it takes like 250-300 lbs of torq to set the barrel time correctly)
i would never build another fal again even though mine came out alright, its better to just buy a DSA or have someone who has built alot of FAL's put together a kit for you.

Saw the documentary, it was sensationalized bullshit. They were putting the pistols together with already machined parts--you can't make a barrel out of a solid block of steel with hand tools. If they had a forge in that hut, maybe it would have been slightly less bullshit. But there was no forge and no smithing tools, just some guys with hand tools like files and hacksaws.
