If they get organized on a level like ISIS, the opposing force is going to have a bad time. And this isn't taking into consideration that it would be a massive proxy war that will see financing and support from countries like Russia.

Do nothing and eat your food stores until you can identify a legitimate command structure that will employ you. Develop a very local defense/awareness network(your neighbors) to assess threats and evaluate communications for legitimacy. The biggest threat will be disinformation from both side, both of which will be out to get you to get yourself killed.

For tactics, best would be to look at counterinsurgency stuff, find what's hardest to counter and most effective, then work backwards to the insurgency source material. Militaries put out a shitload of documents and research papers on this stuff, all publicly available. There's a DoD website with a lot of them (literally thousands), don't have the link on my phone, but it was part of some military college website (marines?).

For media, look at what ISIS and the Kurds are doing at the moment. Also look at older examples like Hezbollah, IRA, Tamil Tigers, etc., but update them along the same lines as what contemporary terrorist groups have done. Just go online, download their videos and read analyses on them.

Some knowledge of electronics and things like Arduino/Raspberry pi is probably more valuable now than ever before, because you can DIY a lot of stuff that would previously be impossible or impractical. Heaps of projects and source code available online.

Apart from that, just all your other skills that were available a generation ago, like survivalist stuff, soldiering, chemistry/bomb making, metalwork. Again, plenty of info online, tactics videos on YouTube by veterans, metal fabrication videos by manufacturers.

This is what a lot of people don't understand. Civil war is localised. It's rare, even in the most extreme cases, that civil war is universal or even widespread. You could have it in a few states or areas and the rest of the country could move along - as in Syria, across the former Yugoslavia, any African conflict you care to pick.

The chances of you actually fighting a formed unit is infinitely slim. You are going to be dealing with, if anything, opportunists, bandits, criminals. Essentially it'll be South Africa on a fast burner.

The government targeting you is plausible, and has happened, but it's not what you should be preparing for especially if you live away from populated areas and infrastructure points. What's a lot more likely is your local version of the people in the OP picture getting excited and either deciding to steal your stuff because they feel they need it more than you, or lies spreading about your political sympathies.

The other factor I see being a issue depends on how bad and disgruntled our active and reserve soldiers are at the point of revolution. If you can swing a 75/25 majority, hell even a 50/50 then the rebels have a good chance.

I already see mass desertion being a huge problem, mostly soldier refusing to fight there own countrymen and perhaps a few joining them.

I suppose I should have phrased my original post differently. I wasn't really looking for what to do but more of what such an event might look like if that makes sense.
I feel like incidents including but not limited to the Bundy ranch shit, its sequel, .gov reaction to katrina, and what has happened in places like baltimore and ferguson can give us some insight from which to extrapolate what such an event (more major civil unrest, ie; if a similar event set off a figurative spark that actually catches) may look like in the current political climate
