The reporter embedded with marine first recon in Iraq 2003. I mean the guy who wrote the book that became generation kill, they don't show it in the series but at one point he had to use Ray's M4 and cover a sector while he drove. When talking about the useless priest marine Colbert says "when push comes to shove even rolling stone picks up a gun" which is an allusion to this.
Also, there's a short documentary on yt about British army pathfinder platoon, and before the patrol the journalist and cameraman were trained to use the vehicle weapons in case they took casualties. Never had to though.

No. They are only good for randomly exploding so their obnoxious friends back home can villianize everyone who is actually contributing to combat.

And their friends love covering each other's ass when they get exposed for lying.

All journalists are narcissists who want to BE the story.
>>
>>32120165

Yes. It takes balls to choose to go out to a warzone unarmed and try to tell the story to a public who will probably just shrug and switch to ESPN.

Especially today. Back in the day the agencies and papers had no problem spending oodles of cash to get their correspondents out to the hot spots and made sure they had proper equipment/fixers/back up in case shit went south. Nowadays the situation is fucked, news outlets either rely on freelancers - who, as events in the middle east demonstrate, are completely fucked if they get taken - or are just spoonfed stuff from the State Department. Boston Globe did a good article on this.

>Under intense financial pressure, most American newspapers, magazines, and broadcast networks have drastically reduced their corps of foreign correspondents. Much important news about the world now comes from reporters based in Washington. In that environment, access and credibility depend on acceptance of official paradigms. Reporters who cover Syria check with the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House, and think tank “experts.” After a spin on that soiled carousel, they feel they have covered all sides of the story. This form of stenography produces the pabulum that passes for news about Syria.

Also please don't confuse some talking head anchorman who flies into Iraq for three days with an actual War Correspondent.

Marie Colvin, Sebastien Junger, Tim Hetherington, Michael Yon, Orla Guerin and Tim O'Brien are all /k/ as fuck.

Peter Nickeas deserves a mention as well, although he's a crime correspondent. Ross Kemp's Afghanistan series is actually really good as well.

Good, wish we had more of them so we'd have more simple documentaries like Restrepo and it's like. Otherwise we're never going to see the costs laid out from both sides back home.

Also, Capa covered the Spanish Civil War, WW2, knew Hemingway, and wasn't afraid of anything.

Volunteered in Syria last year. There was a Dutch war journalist going with my unit for 2 weeks, that guy was funny. We sat on the ground for eating, there's almost no tables in the most villages. That guy wore clothes like he would make a report about a cheese factory in Holland or something, after 2 days his trousers were full of holes, so we gave him uniform trousers. Then he started mourning about wearing a uniform, snipers confusing him for YPG, and what not. When one of the Kurds wanted to give him his AK and take a photo, he really freaked out.
One day, after defending a village for almost 15 hours, we captured one of those Jihadi rats alive. We lost 9 comrades, men and women, and everyone was tired and angry. So of course, that fuckwit received a few hits. Not much tho, and our unit's commander told everyone to stop. That so called war journalist published an article about that "incident", claiming that YPG is torturing their prisoners. Without any report about other incidents besides the one when he was with us.
Also wrote bad stuff about other units he's been with, i don't believe a word.

So, no. I wouldn't say war journalists were /k/.

Any self respecting war reporter wont touch a weapon as a matter of principle.
reporters are supposed to be impartial. if you pick up a weapon, you become a combatant. Not only have you betrayed your journalistic integrity but you also forfeit certain safeties afforded to you as a non-combatant.
They are there to observe.

Mate, Gonzo Journalism is part of the "way" of modern journalism.

It is literally impossible for a journalist to give an objective account of events. The modern "way" is to accept that you will be subjective. Thompson's way accepts and embraces individual subjectivity and experience, and as such is somewhat "honest".

However, honesty doesn't sell as well as sensationalism and skewing facts. Combine the subjective nature of journalism with the hunt for profit, and you get the modern journalism that disturbed you so.

You can not defeat the allure of profit, stop being so idealistic.

Journalists are typically very stupid, very opinionated slacktivists who think that they are going to "blow the lid" off some social crime and become big heroes.

You can notice this by observing how journalists waltz into warzones and pretend they aren't part of the fighting, then they get shot, and all their journalist buddies get up in arms over it and how the press should have total freedoms, even in the most shithole brushfire wars.

just 4 months, was kinda hard to get to syria. we took a flight to iraq, were brought into a camp in the mountains, and had to wait to be taken over the border. That big ass river Tigris is the natural border between Northeast Syria/Northwest Iraq, we were dropped off by a car on the highway at night approx 5km from the river and border fence, and had to wander there through fields. It was raining and pitch black, only the guy who led us to the river had NVG. The border fence was pretty impressive, with searchlights and shit. The closer we got, the more i realized it's just show. There were holes everywhere in the fence, and the towers were empty. We got through the fence and were taken over the river by YPG people in a rubber boat. Pretty exciting night.
We got back to Iraq by car, there's a checkpoint on the way to Sinjar where YPG personel can legally cross the border to get to Sinjar. Then we got dropped off on the highway and were picked up by 2 paid Peshmerga officers, who gave us Peshmerga uniform tops and brought us through a dozen of checkpoints back to the mountains north of Mossul,

>>32122948
What you say is true, but most people don't realize that the media's job has shifted from reporting the true story to selling ad space and commercials. Most people believe what they read in the newspaper or see on TV news.

The sooner you realize that the media is merely selling a product, the better.

>>
>>32126426
>What you say is true, but most people don't realize that the media's job has shifted from reporting the true story to selling ad space and commercials.
That's largely because of the corporate news structure that has emerged in the last 20 or so years.

News was once able to be a 'lost' for TV networks, it didn't have to be catchy or entertaining because the reason people were tuning in was because they wanted the fuckin' news!

The 24 hour news cycle/channels changed that. To get people's attention they had to be entertaining, while also profitable to pay for running them all the time.

And now I keep hearing that most people get their news from fucking Facebook these days. Which is just bad on so many levels I don't know where to start.

>Both her parents were killed when Kate was 18.
>On 30 March 1958, at age 15, [Kate] Webb was charged with the murder of Victoria Fenner, the adopted daughter of Frank Fenner in Canberra. She supplied a rifle and bullets to Fenner and was present when Fenner shot herself. After a Children's Court hearing the charge was dropped.
holy shi--
>Webb was soon hired by UPI and earned a reputation as a hard-drinking, chain-smoking war correspondent: she was the first wire correspondent to reach the U.S. Embassy, Saigon during the Tet offensive.
>In 1971 she made news herself when she was captured by North Vietnamese troops operating in Cambodia. Premature official reports claimed that a body discovered was Webb's, and the New York Times published an obituary. She emerged from captivity 23 days after she was captured, after having endured forced marches, interrogations, and malaria.
>After the war, she continued to work as a foreign correspondent for UPI and Agence France-Presse (AFP), and served as a correspondent in Iraq during the Gulf War, in Indonesia as Timor-Leste gained independence, and in South Korea, where she was the first to report the death of Kim Il-Song. She also reported from Afghanistan, and later described an incident in Kabul as the most frightening in her career. Following the collapse of Mohammad Najibullah's communist regime, she was captured by a local warlord and brought to a hotel, where she was brutally beaten and dragged up a flight of stairs by her hair. She finally escaped with the help of two fellow journalists, and hid out on a window ledge in the freezing Afghan winter, while the warlord and his men searched the building for her.
