Open bolt is naturally inclined to go full auto, in fact if something goes wrong with the trigger group/safety depending on the gun it is going to run away on full auto. The trigger essentially stops the gun mid action from continuing to shoot.

Closed bolt requires a hammer and other mechanical stuff to ensure the timing is right for full auto and it gets really complicated quick, especially if you want it to be select fire.

A simple way to think of it is open bolt is a cannonball falling through the sky and the trigger is something solid that stops it from falling and a closed bolt is the cannonball on the ground that requires it to be thrown up into the sky in order to fall back down.

I would suggest world of guns or something along those lines to see how guns work mechanically in action. It is easier to see than to explain.

Open-bolt is designed from the beginning to be really basic full-auto.

Your fire control group is literally just your trigger (or an extension linked to the trigger), that catches the bolt and holds it in place, pulling the trigger lets the bolt go and the bolt slams home, the firing-pin is fixed and as soon as action closes, it fires the cartridge it just picked up, using the inertia and weight of the bolt (no hammer or striker needed)

A semi-auto open-bolt has a secondary part or section of the sear which catches the bolt when it comes back again, this part is typically very easy to modify or remove, turning it into a full-auto.
A select-fire open-bolt weapon would disconnect a secondary sear when set on full-auto.

Looking at an old MAC-10 pistol, the sear literally just has a section that you can grind off (not requiring a lot of special knowledge or tools), without that section to catch the bolt automatically as it comes back, you have to let go of the trigger to let the bolt be caught, otherwise the bolt will bounce back and continue it's fire cycle.

It really is silly easy to make a machinegun (google Luty 9mm), and a semi-auto open-bolt weapon is silly easy to convert to a machinegun. Pic related is an animation showing the action of a Sten gun, it genuinely is as simple as it looks.

if its not closed the gun explodes since its out of battery or you get a click since the fining pin hit nothing.

In the case of old subguns, it's simply mass, that's straight blowback. There's no locking.

The weight of the bolt keeps the action closed long enough for chamber pressure to drop to safe levels, eventually the pressure coming back overcomes the weight of the bolt.

Hence you can have a straight blowback .22 and the bolt is tiny and neat, but on a 9mm blowback gun, the bolt needs to be a lot heavier (closed bolt or open bolt).

Your fellow shooters are not there to police you, and nobody but the actual ATF are allowed to ask to see your tax papers. If some cockbag RO asks for them, tell them to stuff it.

It'd admittedly be pretty damn bold to do that with an NFA-violating item, but statistically, you're unlikely to encounter an actual ATF agent at a gun range.

There are less than 5000 ATF employees total, and often only a single field office for a jurisdiction of several states. For example, OR, WA, and ID are all covered by the Seattle field office.

It doesn't have to, if you fuck with the sear of a closed bolt weapon it can become sporadic, the hammer could follow completely, or follow closely, or with a larger gap, enough to set off the cartridge by chance.

Grinding away at a semi-auto sear can cause unpredictable behavior, not just a whole lot of hammer follow and occasional burp-fires.
