Its one of the WORST self-defense weapons.
Short range and inability to judge and control the level of violence you are using. One slash or stab and the other guy is dead. This lands you in prison in eurofag countries. Telescopic baton + gas/gel is much better because you can disable your target.
In USA... guns are just superior for obvious reasons and the baton is still better as a backup (range + non-lethal application).
Of course if we are talking about street violence its also very good to be able to RUN FAST.

I too love knives but sadly guns are more effective. I do however believe guns are just cheap where as knives and blades take an entirely different level of skill. With blades the skill of the user effects the outcome of the fight.

Even if someone trains at drawing and shooting at a target that is within 5 feet of them, its still iffy. the assaulter generally won't reveal their weapon until they are within a range of threat. They don't draw their knife and run at you from 21 feet.

Hands are the best self defense weapon, because they're the only weapon that you can have drawn and at the ready 100% of the time. Blades and firearms are supplementary weapons to give you an edge in certain situations, and part of using them properly is knowing when not to use them.

Knives suck because you can't go to a knife range.
You can't hunt with a knife or practice with it in a simulation. I mean I guess you could do what I do and set up some old milk jugs with water in them and pretend, but it feels pretty lame.
