Buying my first rifle tomorrow at Gander Mtn. I've heard it would be a good choice to get a .22lr as first gun. Is this right? If so, what would be a good rifle for small game hunting and long range target practice?

sorry if you guys get this thread a lot, I looked to see if there was something similar already posted but didn't see anything
>>
Buy a 10/22 if you want a semi auto. Savage Mk2 with an accu trigger if you want a bolt action.
>>
You're going to out grow that 22 real quick and want something bigger.
>>
>>32106891
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that. I definitely want a bolt action. Thanks.
>>
>>32106879
Any of them. The Ruger 10/22 is a board favorite.

>target practice
What you want is a trigger job (consult your local gunsmith) and a decent scope (anything not made in China).

Welcome to the shooting sports. Let us know how it all went.
>>
>>32106896
would you recommend something bigger for a first time gun purchase? Every one I talked to said to just get a .22
>>
>>32106897
The Savage, then. >>32106891 Has a built in trigger job.

Get the best scope you can afford. Everyone shoots better with decent glass. Nikon is good. So is Burris.
>>
>>32106900
Okay, Thanks. There are a few local gunsmiths that are right down the road from me. What is it exactly that they would be doing to improve the trigger?
>>
>>32106879
Buy a .243 tikka t3
>>
>>32106922
Alright, I really appreciate the help. Ill look for that tomorrow then.
>>
>>32106923
Polishing things and possibly replacing the springs. Every firearm is different. Companies like Timney and Geissele and JP make whole trigger groups you can drop into anything from a Mauser to an AR-15.

Get the Savage, though. Accutriggers are wonderful things.

get a cheap 22 bolt action rifle. see if you like shooting, then get a shotgun of some kind and a bigger caliber rifle like a .223 or a 30-06 or a .308. maybe even get something in 7.62x39 like a ak or a sks.
>>
>>32106908
A bolt gun in 223 possibly, not as cheap to plink with but can get more range out of it then a 22 and can possibly take larger game if you want to.
>>
>>32106923
dont do that. first thing is first, just get a ruger 10/22 and a bunch of ammo and shoot the fucking thing. your thinking to hard into it. watch some videos on youtube how to improve your shooting skills . the main thing is to jsut go out and shoot and figure alot of it out on your own. practice alot, learn how to use those iron sights, then later get a optic, and maybe later get another gun.
>>
>>32107003
This.

Also, use reactive targets. You know. Like a tin can. They go BING! when you do everything right. Paper doesn't.
>>
Definitely get a cheap but good. 22 first. You learn basic safety, get some low cost trigger time and have fun. Later you can get something more powerful - k31 is a fantastic mil surp bolt...
>>
>>32107003
Im gunna do basically exactly this but with the savage rifle instead. I dont really want a semi auto. My grandpa has one that I've shot.
>>
>>32106908
a ar-15 is actually a pretty good gun for a first gun, if you have $600-$700 to buy a cheap one.
get like a psa rifle or something. it also depends on where you live though, like if you have public land you can go out on and just setup targets wherever and shoot or if your stuck having to go to designated ranges or have to pay to shoot at indoor ranges will all be factors on what kinds of guns will be practical for you to own.

are those little circle metal targats that swing back and forth any good? Ill use paper ones when I want to test my accuracy but I think those little metal things would be good at first to dial it it in.

I live in NY...

If you got a dicks sporting good they have 10/22 for 200 and 2 boxes of federal white box for 35. Currently at the counter waiting to do FFL paperwork but NICS is bogged down right now.
>>
>>32107065
Ahh son I'm sorry.

>>32107034
awesome, have fun!

lets just not talk about it

Any kind of reactionary target is great to shoot at IMO. Just plinking paper gets old but hearing the clink you get when you hit it is much more satisfying. I got a few ar500 targets myself

The Savage that has been recommended is a very good option for a new shooter, however I'd also like to recommend a CZ452 or 455 if you intend to shoot primarily with iron sights rather then slap a scope on immediately. Personally I find that being able to shoot well with iron sights is a lot more satisfying then shooting with a scope, but your mileage may vary
>>
>>32107236
I'll second this, but mags for it are fucking expensive. You can get 5, 10 or 25 round mags for it and they're all around $30.
>>
>>32106908
Enjoy the .22 lr anon, I love mine and shoot it the most (poorfag). It's fun to pop city squirrels or ones in my backyard.
