What to look for in a backpacking rifle?

a take down rifle or a bullpup or lever action (or pump) in 30-30 or similar. .223 can be done with heaver bullets like 77gr or so.

the idea is to get it to fit either in or comfortably packed in a pouch or scabbard on the side of a pack. otherwise you sling it underhandedly and unloaded.

i backpacked forever with a marlin 336 in 30-30 and it was great for mountain goats, coyote, mule deer, and one time bob cat.

Pretty much any bolt action rifle with a lightweight, composite stock and a thin profile barrel. Put a light 3-9x scope on there, and the whole package will only weight about 7 lbs or so, very light. Caliber doesn't matter, any rifle in this configuration will be light, even a .30-06.

I picked up one of these in 30 06 and I can carry that son of a bitch all day up just about any reasonable terrain

What kind of megafauna are you hunting mate? cause 7.62x39 will kill brown bear deader than dead. and then there is also the fact that you have 30rds of that shit. there is no game in North America that will not be reliably ended by this round.
