Can't comment on the Byrd, but I've carried a Tenacious every day for the last 4 or 5 years and couldn't be happier with it.
>>
>>32098933

Can't go wrong with a Delica, assuming that's cheap enough.
>>
>>32099100
It's spine jimping is finer and more functional, the Tenacious jimping reminds me of the Ganzo's. The handles are of similar layout but the Raven allows you to choke if you want to. Includes a proper sharpening choil rather than the abrupt finish the Tenacious has and finally it's a better steel. They're both great and very similar I just think the Raven pips the Tenacious.

Just how good is the Mora Companion? I know it's supposedly one of the best budget fixed bushcrafters out there, but how does it stand up to say, a KABAR or a Ontario SP2? Friend is a hunter but he's usually not he one that does the dressing. Most of his knives are shitty Gerbers or chinkshit so I want to get him a halfway decent knife he can beat on but won't break when he really needs it. I was thinking a 1095 Companion, but I got to thinking maybe I should be a better friend and just get him a SP2 instead of a cheapie, but if Moras really are good then I won't feel too bad. I'm not a hunter or bushcrafter so I'm asking if anyone here has experience with both in a tual buschrafting situations.

if it's frank beltrame, then it's as good as production stilettos go.

I'm not a fan of stilettos, but I got one a few months back, and this is the only time I've actually "used it" - as a prop for a film noir themed photoshoot.

Just don't expect the knife to be an amazing slicer - while it is full flat grind, the blade is narrow, and the geometry of the cutting edge isn't great, but then that's not what it was meant for.

Man, so far Maxamet it proving to behave pretty differently than what I was expecting.

With an ~18-20 degrees per side edge bevel it has shown much better resistance to microscopic apex chipping in EDC type use than I expected. Honestly, I think it *may* have better high sharpness edge retention than ZDP-189 while having WAY more wear resistance.

As I mentioned last thread, I've also been surprised at how well it takes a polish, even off of Spyderco benchstones. I never would have thought a steel with such an enormous carbide content at ~68 HRC would take a freehand mirror polish on sintered ceramic stones.
>>
>>32102255
HSS is funny stuff to work with, it doesn't cope well with deformation but it's brittleness is offset with really high edge strength, so it takes a lot of abuse for the brittleness to become apparent. It does surprise me it's grinding well for you though, any thought as to why? it should be fairly rich with tungsten and vanadium carbides which aren't exactly soft.

>>
>>32102543

What the hell does it matter. Are you afraid of being lynched? If they care enough to go that far they're not doing it by themselves and a knife most likely will not help you. You can't have a locking knife. Maybe one of the Spyderco slipits. I personally carry a spyderco UK pen knife drop point.

>>
>>32102676
Because German law says you can't have something that has both a one hand opening feature and a lock. So you either need something like the U.K. Penknife or a locking knife that doesn't have a one hand open, like an okapi, case or buck 110, or something like that.

Okapi doesn't have a thumbstud, but can easily be opened one handed with a little practice, and any officer won't think that it could be. It also locks, has a useable blade shape, is easy to sharpen and it's cheap.

I expected it to be relatively much harder to grind than ZDP-189 and CPM-M4 but so far it hasn't seemed that much more difficult to grind, certainly not the extent that was being suggested to me before I got it.

I wanted a Maxamet Manix 2 so bad until I found out it was only the Lightweight version. If it was the regular G10 handle version, I would have been all over it.
I did a bit of research into the steel and found that most people said exactly what you did. And I already love my ZDP-189 Stretch so I was really excited about the Maxamet Manix... Until they released the catalogue.
>>
>>32102255
You can also use it to cut the teeth off of steel files. Maxamet is some badass stuff.
>>
>>32102532
Spyderco makes some of the best serrations that I've used. It's best to sharpen them a few times so they aren't as pointed. This helps them to cut without snagging.
>>
>>32103834

It's being rolled out in the Manix 2 LW initially, but the plan is (assuming they sell) roll out Maxamet to several models as regular production variants.

There may not be a PM2 in it for a while though because AFAIK they can only get 3mm thick stock without custom ordering. Given that, I would expect a G10 Manix 2 version sooner rather than later.

There's a shit ton of custom makers, some known others practically basement dweller tier. Like the other anon said, it's a matter of preference. Once you hit the $150+ range you're pretty much dealing with semi custom knives and onward. Again, matter of preference if you like them or not but they're going to be good quality.
>>

i have been carrying a spyderco resilience for about 4 years now and i love it. i work construction so it gets used alot.

I have a 400/800/1200 set of stones. What progressiond should i go to next, i want to go to 12000 or maybe even 20k if its feasible because that sexy mirror polish
>>
>>32103807
It'll last a while.

And a buck knife is great for dressing.

Sharpfinger works well as long as you sharpen it first, doesn't come with the best edge. An old American made high carbon one is best, but a stainless will do.
>>
>>32103781
CS isn't the best, but the Recon series and the Code series are known for being among the best bang for your buck workhorse folders. Personally, I'd go for a PM2 sprint run if you're looking for a large folder and they have a wider range of available steels, but the CS is cheaper and has a high end ish steel. If you want quality that isn't mall ninja, get a PM2. If you wanna save $40 and don't care about having a mall ninja blade, then get the Recon.
>>
>>32103807
If you're looking for something cheap I'd probably go with a Buck Omni hunter, the Sharpfinger should do ok though, never used one DESU the blade looks a little narrow for me, got ok belly but the way the blade steps down from the handle looks useful.

>>
>>32106409

You're going to have to answer a bunch of questions before I'd be able to make any stone recommendations:

1) Are you experienced at freehand sharpening?

2) What kind of stones do you have now? Are they waterstones?

3) What kinds of steels would you be interested in mirror polishing on the stones?

4) Are you aware that mirror polished edges look pretty but aren't functionally that useful due to very low slicing aggression and (for the same reason) poor edge retention in slice cutting? I would advise using a microbevel at a grit that's actually practically useful if you want to mirror the edge bevel for aesthetic reasons.

5) What's your budget? Are you prepared to buy a diamond plate to flatten waterstones on top of the waterstones themselves?

6) Do you care if the stones have to be flattened a lot and wear relatively quickly as long as they cut faster? Or would you prefer harder, less muddy waterstones, even if they are much slower?
>>
>>32107941

What's your budget and do you really need the toughness of the ESEE? If you don't need the toughness, there will be probably be higher performance options at the price point.
>>
>>32108673
i really didnt want to pay too much. less than $50 is what i was really wanting to pay when i set out to look for a knife. For the most part, i dont to outdoorsman things. So strength may not be necessary. But some utility would be nice.

It's a classic, functional design made by a classic company. It is very outdated compared to modern standards, but was once the pinnacle of American made, cheap, but well made folders. I think everyone should have one, even if it doesn't get used.
>>
>>32108981

How often should I be oiling up my knife?

Just a standard higo, mostly sees every day use opening packages and slicing up the occasional snack.

I keep it clean and dry between uses, but I live by the ocean and we're getting into a pretty humid summer here.
>>
>>32110701
I would apply a thin film every other day or so if you're not inside a dry lower humidity housing.

Dunno if they'd be your thing, but knifecenter has a Black Friday deal on Todd Begg Mini Bodegas for $400. I think that's the best $400 you could spend on a knife right now. I'd be buying one right now if I weren't kinda broke. (And if I splurge, it's gonna be on one of the Inkosis that BHQ is getting on Monday.)
>>
>>32115863
>>32117009
Yeah the Triad lock is pretty ridonculous. My personal vote would go for the Ball bearing lock though, it's also going to break a pivot before it breaks a lock but it's fuckloads nicer to use than a Triad.
>>
>>32115828
With that many 6x's and 51's, you could have had a few BRS's or HOM's. Objectively better flipping and handle material. I love balis, but the old 4x's are a lot better than the new ones and honestly the 6x's are overpriced.
>>32115863
Cold Steel Triad. But it's so strong it's pretty much overkill. If you're doing a job that requires something better than a lockback or Axis lock, you may as well use a fixed blade.
