>Time before guns were a thing

Pick one and only one.

The battle of Cannae in the Second Punic War saw the Carthaginian at just hacking and killing for HOURS thousands upon thousands of Romans. For hours. Never once did they stop and say "oh wow I am a pansexual turbo nu male faggot and this is SOOOOOO hard and I wish I didn't have to do this hand to hand!" They mercilessly killed and slaughtered the enveloped Romans. This idea that firearms makes killing easier mentally is fucking stupid. People have killed each other gleefully for millennia.

When Alexander took Tyre he had 2000 people FUCKING CRUCIFIED. But yep, people definitely were far too squeamish to just kill a man with a spear.

A small bow or crossbow that you can handle in the house.
Have a sword ready as a backup, a short to medium length sword capable of thrusting. There's not much room to swing so you gotta stab.

if we can use modern materials/manufacturing then a strong "pistol" crossbow could work. Not the normal $50 crap, way stronger than that. There would probably be a weapons company making something like that.
A slingbow or slingcrossbow (what are those called?) would also be compact, probably better for HD than a wide regular crossbow. Go Jeorge Sprave on the burglar's ass.

The point is that using stored energy to launch a projectile as a concept dates back to the bow & arrow. Using chemical energy with a mix of a solid fuel & oxidant is a logical step from using; tension, gravity, and compressed air.

A world where something like a gun does not exist would be a world with completely different physics to ours. That or humans being absolute pacifists (even more unlikely).

not true there would be masterfully worked armor that defeats the heaviest crossbows a man can carry, horses bred for fighting for a couple of more centuries able to carry their armored rider and themselves being armored. city walls so thick no amount of rock throwing can't demolish them. huge metropolises spreading behind multiple rings of walls, maybe with steam engines railroads eventually replace horses and men at arms use them to hurry and meet their enemy. nations have no more hope of conquering each other. as the defending party has all the advantage. wars mainly fought over the colonies and resources where railroads not yet established and ships are the most important factor.
>>

>air rifles become popular
>"hey guys why don't we replace the stored high pressure air with a fast burning chemical"

Gun powder is made by the combination of 3 things: sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate (saltpeter). These 3 things have to be mixed in exact proportion to explode, its highly unlikely anyone would have discovered this by accident because knowledge of chemistry wasnt at a level to understand what these elements/compounds were till the 1800s.

The result is that armor would be in use for all soldiers, swords, spears and archerywould remain the main weapons. Heavy horses would be bred to carry armored knights. Trebuchets would have continued in common use. Ships would have still been designed like castles for boarding and hand to hand combat. Rowing galleys would still be designed to ram. All this would continue to the 1800s till someone finally invented explosives.

we've already established that "fast burning chemicals" don't exist in this scenario. it would be great if you could reload the gas tank of an air rifle by opening it, dropping in a few grains of powder, closing it and then iginiting it with a piezoelectric mechanism.
