The point is that using stored energy to launch a projectile as a concept dates back to the bow & arrow. Using chemical energy with a mix of a solid fuel & oxidant is a logical step from using; tension, gravity, and compressed air.

All this would continue to the 1800s till someone finally invented explosives.
