I had no idea what you were talking about, so I had to look that up. I gotta thank you for that. I'm always interested in the history of the internet. I'm a millennial, so when I was old enough to start looking into websites other than Roblox and shit, I ended up stuck with Reddit, and eventually moved here, so I really have barely any idea what the internet of the 90's and early 2000's were like. Looking at the earlier days of the internet is like when you were 4 and you were reading about things like Blackbeard, the Wright brothers, stuff like that. OK that illustration is fucked but this was actually true. Prior to the international jihad era, bin Laden was involved in the effort against the soviets in Afghanistan as everyone knows. Bin Ladens role, however, is often misunderstood (sometimes deliberately I think).

Bin Laden was a logistics man. He started in an office in Pakistan (peshawar I think) that used money raised internationally to fund the recruitment and transport of jihadis from places like Egypt and and Saudi Arabia to Pakistan and across the boarder into Astan.

Eventually Bin Laden moved out on his own, into Astan and used his considerable construction connections to bring material into Afghanistan. In addition to importing fighters he was importing construction equipment and building, you guessed it, networks of mountian bunkers. These were to serve as living quarters, arms stores, and even hospitals. Known/verified history (not to be confused with OBL's mythologized accounts) seems to indicate these networks of bunkers and pill boxes were never used for much more than storage and training as they were completed as the soviets were engaged in strategic withdrawal.

So yes. Bin Laden had a mountian hideout. Built to fight the soviets, abandoned in the late 80s, and returned to in the late 90s afte OBL got booted from Africa for being a shit stirrer.

Fun bit of trivia, AL Queda translates to "the base." Membership, including OBL himself have said this as spiritual meaning. As in, Islam is the base of one's life. Some historians actually believe the name first arose as an actual refrence to Bin Ladens mountin base of operations during the late stages of the Soviet Afghan conflict while Bin Ladens jihad group was shifting it's focus from Afghanistan to international jihad.
