http://www.springfield-armory.com/m1a-series/

What variant would you go for and reasons?
>>
>>32089215
Standard or Loaded.

The short ones are larger pieces of shit than the larger ones.
>>
>>32089215
Why do you want an M1A over any of the other battle rifles?
>>
Got a SCAR 17 in fifty shades from Brownells for 2.9k. Missed a deal on another site for 2.7k. Are they coming back for real this time? Also, what optic should I get for it? I can get Leupold and Trijicon at cost, so i was looking at Mark 6, Mark 8, and VCOG, but Elcan, Kahles 1-6x, and Swaro 1-6x are looking fine too.
>>
>>32089355
Well, I want
>a battle rifle
>something in .308
>semi auto
>mag fed

I like the "old-school" appeal; but they also have variants with a modern twist (shorter barrels, collaspsable stocks, rails for optics, etc.)

I don't know - for me, they harken back to an earlier era; but I heard these have become more popular recently in the war in the Middle East (being more reliable at longer ranges).

What are some of your suggestions?
>>
>>32089409
FN will probably churn out more SCARs soon.
>>
>>32089409
ah, that would explain why theres like 8 scars, atleast half of them NIB, for sale on arfcom's EE.
not only that but the average price has gone down slightly. they hover right around $3400.
>>
>>32089523
PTR, FAL, and AR10 are also good. Personally, I like my FAL for the ergonomics and looks. I imagine an AR10 handles a lot like an AR15. I haven't had the chance to shoot an AR10 or a PTR though, so I don't have much of an opinion on those. M1 Garand shoots well, but my preference is for something with a pistol grip since it is easier for me to handle and a pistol grip on an M1A looks silly.
>>
>>32089590
I have an AR15 - so the AR10 does sound appealing. I've heard a lot about the FAL, not so much the PTR.

I also don't mind the lack of pistol grips - tradition rifle grips work for me too.
>>
>>32089656
a 308 ar is pretty much the same as its 5.56 counterpart. if youre assembling you own, more care has to be taken with parts compatibility.
>>
>>32089690
by the same, i mean handling and feel
>>
>>32089656
Gun Jesus from Forgotten Weapons has done a couple of videos on the G3 (which the PTR is based off), the FAL, and the AR10 in which he gives his thoughts and opinions. If you get the chance, try shooting them before purchasing.

>>
>>32090747
I've been eyeing that one as some forum posts say that it is the best Mark 8 reticle. However, the h27d looks extremely cluttered from Leupold's own picture. I mainly want something that is relatively quick at 1x but can reach up to 600-800m if necessary because there is BLM land around me that I won't visit frequently. My local ranges are usually limited to 300m.

Horus reticles take a few times to get used to. But for speed. The fine subtensions seem to disappear. Crank the magnification up, and they are there, but it's not a big deal.

Everyone thinks they are busy looking at the .jpg of the reticle. A few sessions of using one and it's a different experience.

It's really just the lolgoodluckfindingonemeriburger appeal.

It is just the rear of it that is ugly. From about the trigger forward there is nothing terribly offensive to the eyes but holy shit that stock and pistol grip and the way it clashes with the rest of the gun.

It's like a weightlifter with stumpyass legs or something.

I like the look of the charging handle, shame I will never get to try one.

Anyway, it doesn't kick nearly as hard as I thought it would. Fired a hundred Wolf steelcase polyformance through it, ran like a dream. I'm pretty pleased with what I got, thanks BRG for not leading me astray.

Cleaning this thing was almost a nightmare, as I foolishly took the bolt apart and spent a further half hour trying to reassemble it in just the right way as to not lock the rollers out before i put it back in. The handbook that comes with it is borderline useless. Also that detent that keeps the bolthead in place is extremely taut, does it wear a little looser as it gets assembled/disassembled?

Hope everyone has a nice Turkeyday tomorrow.

/brg/ I need your help. I am a Californian and as such have until December 21 to get in any last detachable magazine rifle purchases.

I am pretty well stocked up on everything I need, but want to get into a battle rifle within the next month.

Because they are much more expensive than other firearms, I want to buy a receiver and build it from there. Can /brb/ recommend a platform that can be built from basic tools?

I am currently looking at the AR-10 and FAL. What about the M-14? Can it be built from just a receiver?

Any links on researching this further? It would be appreciated

So two contemporary examples, both of which are in the process of being phased out for rifles that do not in fact have a provision for a carry handle.

If your worried about having to drag somebody to safety under fire, you really should have your rifle in a sling. Let go, your rifle is still attached to you.

What a carry handle do but encourage you to not have your rifle slung or at the ready? Sure it lets you carry a busket of tendies and your rifle from the car to the covered shooting bench at the same time.

Outside of of belt fed toys, the carry handle is obsolete.

plenty of market for roller-lock, the way it seems(thanks CAI). You think they'd do a deal with CAI like PTR did? make the receivers, sell them to CA, and they build them on parts kit's like they always do?

>>32117197
Its not that roller lock is higher in demand, its that its a cheaper rifle to make. Stamped parts are pretty cheap to make. DSA got the price of the voyager down to just shy of a grand by doing what CAI does, cheap out on everything you can.

It would be difficult at best for CAI to drop the price another couple hundred. The glory day of the FAL dried up when the $79 dan's parts kit left, and the mags went from $4 a pop

Cheap .308 autoloader is slowly becominig 308 AR territory. When in stock, they are already cheaper than PTR.

Then I bought 500 rounds of wolf steel case and I'm about 80 rounds through that.

Avoid anything with the CAI on the side of it
Its not a dealbreaker, but these are the ones that have issues, they are generally addressable, but understand that you may be needing to address concerns with replacement parts.

And if your in the FAL market, you mind as well make a FALfiles account now, the mods can take awhile approving them,

I have an M1A Scout in California. The pistol grip-less M1As will remain legal to acquire despite the recent legislation, since they don't have the scary features which make them known to the state of California to cause butthurt.

You need a conversion kit since on a standard FAL the recoil spring runs nearly the full length of the buttstock.
>>
>>32126262
>>32126306
Also avoid any FAL with Hesse rollmarks on the receiver. View Enterprise FALs with severe skepticism, since the parts kit is an IMBEL (good) but likely has a shitty receiver, like Hesse.
