If no LGS near you carries milsurp, checking Gunbroker might be your best bet to get an SMLE.

As far as ammo goes, SG Ammo has PPU .303 for 70-75 cents per round, depending on quantity. I haven't seen any surplus .303 for a while now. You can also check AmmoSeek for cheaper options, though I would advise caution with the Wolf steel case stuff. It keyholed badly out of my No 4 Mk 1.

Can't speak for an '03, but with an Enfield you want to make sure the bolt matches the receiver so it headspaces properly. It's not necessarily catastrophic if it doesn't match, but there may be more work involved to get the proper bolt head.
>>
How much would an original matching M95 in original 8x50 go for? Is there a difference in prices between Steyr made rifles, FEG rifles, and Bulgarian rifles?
>>
Is there anything "Wrong" with Yugo SKS's? Are they different from the other models in any intrinsic way? Everything I read about them makes me think they are the best quality SKS rifles you can buy, despite them being overly mass produced / imported and having zero collector value.

They are cheaper, more accurate, have better sights, newer production, and have more features than all the others.

Talk me out of it?
>>
>>32088039
Now you seem to be suggesting that my Garand is an unfaithful whore.

>>32088344
The only thing I'm aware of is that the Yugo SKSs don't have chrome-lined bores like the Chinese or later Russian ones do.

I guess the gas valve is an additional point of failure, but I've not heard of anything major with it.

>>
>>32088743

Any real differences between the 24/47 and 48 in terms of performance?

>>32088766

RC's are a possibility, but the issue is I've yet to ever see any in my local area. Purchasing online is always a possibility, but I'm incredibly neurotic and like to personally inspect things before buying them.
>>
>>32088798
>real differences between the 24/47 and 48 in terms of performance?
No. Why would there be?

>>32088789
900 is insane, but then again, I got my K98 back in 2005 for 160 bucks.
>>
>>32088846

Just double checking. All the info I've seen about the Yugo Mausers is that the 24/47 and 48 are pretty much identical, but the 24/47 uses older stocks. I just wanted to be sure there wasn't a reason to buy one and avoid the other.
>>
Okay I see cheap sporterized mausers all the time

Realistically, since I have never done any gun smithing or anything, how easy is it to put the shooty parts on an another mauser stock?

or is there more to it then I think?
>>
>>32088890
If the metal parts haven't been fucked with, it shouldn't be tough.

Difficult part is finding a sporterized K98 that wasn't completely and irreversibly ruined during its run in with bubba
>>
>>32088723

I bought two K98's roughly 6 months ago. Both are in very good condition. One is a yugo rework that I got for 350, the other was a RC that I got for 600.

The RC is pretty cool. It appears to have an original german finished stock. All the marks are intact, and it doesn't have an X.

Define restore, Fudd will likely take a hacksaw to a barrel to make it a duress gun, you aren't going to be fixing that without a lot of cash and time.

That being said there are plenty of build guides on how to do so but be warned it gets expensive to do it right and if you aren't going to do it right there is little point in doing a conversion like that.

Almost all manufacturers are the same, American QC is usually top notch.

1917 was the best bolt action design on of the war. In fact out of all Mauser knockoffs it was probably the best, you could even argue it was better than the 98k with those sights.
>>
>>32086072

>They are cheaper, more accurate, have better sights, newer production, and have more features than all the others.

>cheaper
Than a russian sks. Cost the same as a chinese

>more accurate
Not really. They all have similar performance. I have owned chinese, russian, and yugo

>have better sights
Lol no. Same standard sks sights that all other countries made. If you find one with tritium night sights, it's probably burnt out from age

>newer production
Yes, but this doesn't mean its better somehow. Russians are considered the best quality, and they were only made during the early 50s

>more features
This is the bad part. You don't want the extra features. It's true that you can find and launch dummy grenades, but there's tons of people in the forums who have cycling problems due to a leaky gas cut off valve

They have an m1911 bang rifle barreled action with a low estimate , but i would need good schematics and a CNC machine to make the missing parts.

Yes they are safe. I have one and shoot it all the time. Just stick to M2 Ball. Dont go shooting 220 Hi Pressure loads through em.

Most likely, the ones that weren't safe have already exploded. The safe thing to do is to not shoot one, but most likely, if it's lasted this long, it's probably fine. However, I would suggest against handloading for one, and would suggest sticking to lower-pressure loads.

>Are "low number" Springfields safe?
Define safe? The chances of one blowing up is a lot less than having a car accident driving to the range to shoot it, much less for dying from one blowing up. BUT, there are SAFER ones to shoot. Tbh, it's not that low numbers blow up, it's how they blow up compared to the high numbers. The really bad ones that failed shattered into shrapnel.

>During the arsenal refinish in WWII did they test them with higher pressure loads, or just give them to any GI that needed a bangstick?
Yes, low numbers were re-proved to see if they would blow up or not.

>Is the P stamp a firing proof or something else?
The P on the stock does mean that it was proved. Of course, if stocks were switched often enough so it doesn't always mean that the action was proved with that stock.

Looking into buying a 98k. I'm in the market for a good condition early war model that I can shoot, and that still shows off the excellent craftsmanship of the gun and the smoothness. Is going around a grand or less feasible?

How do I not get ripped the fuck off. I'm paranoid of accidentally buying a Mitchell's. Is there an import mark on them?

What are some good resources to learn what to look for?

Read read read. Try the Kar.98k board at Gunboards and the K98k forum.

Mitchell's will have polished in-the-white bolts and ridiculously clean-looking stocks usually blonde beech laminate stocks.

Type 99 is a Nagoya series 10 if I remember correctly, ground mum, bright bore, everything matching, intact aircraft sights. Too lazy to pull it from the safe to be 100% certain though. Got that for $175.

>>32101152
>First being, why does it look so different than other Gew.98s? ie, the weird ass wood plate in front of the sights?
It's been sporterized. It no longer has the original stock or handguard. The stock that's on there is from a Mauser Model 1893 (most likely Spanish) and the handguard is from an Argentine Model 1891 (the grooves for the wire bands are a dead giveaway). The barrel has been shortened and the front sight re-mounted, and the metal finish looks like black enamel. Overall I'd guess this was probably thrown together by an importer back in the 1960s from parts they had lying around; it screams "INTERARMS" to me. They bought lots of surplus rifles from Spain in the '60s and sporterized them to sell as cheap hunting rifles.

A shame too, because the "/DZ" and "/18" indicates a depot salvage rifle build, meaning this receiver at least came from a rifle originally made at Spandau Arsenal in 1917 then damaged to such a degree that it was totally re-built in 1918. Then it probably went to the Spanish Fascists with the Condor Legion (or other military aid) and was left-behind after the war was won.

Yes; S/42k was the factory code for Waffenfabrik Mauser prior-to and during 1934; they made the new tangent-leaf rear sight for the Reichswehr/Wehrmacht Gew.98 update program.

Hey guys just to double tap for everyone's awareness....

I read the original us army investigation report on the low serial 03s. Tldr version is that they are still safe. The 24 receiver failures only occurred when the mistreated guns were fed double charged rounds from a shitty sub contractor. The over charged rounds did not blow up regular 03s and the mistreated ones ran normal ammo fine for 30-40 years of service.

All depends on the model of rifle, who may have used it (unrefurbished Finn-marked Soviet rifles aren't worth as much unrefurbished Soviet-only rifles) and the overall condition. Generally, if in approximately the same condition as a refurbished rifle they are worth more.

How hard is it to mount a barrel on an 03a3? Paternal grandpa had a sporter that was stolen, but the thief left the original stock. Maternal grandpa used to do gunsmithing as a hobby, (by this I mean he cut down barrels and stocks on guns for his friends, and they usually turned out nice) and had a box in his basement literally full of 03a3 barrel ends, stock rings, iron sights, and whatever else came off the guns. Might even be a trigger assembly without a trigger in there, I'd have to go look. Anyway, any advice on finding new barrels, barreled actions, receivers or bolts? My first place to look was for an uncut sporter but that route is more money for a used up gun, and the idea of having a new barrel makes me excited.

That's a lot of fuddlore you're spewing.

Yugo SKS's have zero issues firing corrosive surplus, and there is not reason not to. All you have to do is clean the gun thoroughly when you're done. Yugo surplus 7.62x39 is .30 a round where as steel case Tula is .21 a round.

I've always wondered, what steel were guns made of back in the day? I've heard t gewehrs were made of almost rebar like steel and arisakas had some crazy low carbon steel that was used in last ditch rifles that were good to go because of the action strength but have never been able to find specific studies on the things.

Also what is rockwell hardness even? How is it relevent?

>>32109498
Usually something called ordnance steel. It varies by country and era. Current most common steel would be 4140/4150.
Read Hatcher's Notebook for more in depth.
You want barrels to be soft so they split rather than shatter.
>>
>>32109498
Oh god, there isn't enough time in the day to go and explain it all.

As a general rule, Rockwell hardness (C scale is used the most for steel) correlates to tensile strength. Harder steel=stronger steel. However, it also means more brittle steel. So a balance is usually found. Obviously I'm leaving out all sorts of stuff like tempering, work hardening, allowing, and blah blah blah. But basically you shoot for between 30 and 50 HRC for things like gun parts
>>32109525
Correct. Ordinance steel is roughly comparable to SAE 1050 in most instances. Good medium carbon steel. Nowadays 4150,4140, 4130,4327, 4340, Etc are used, and 416 or 440 from the stainless side.

20160905_123449.jpg
4MB, 4032x3024px
>>32109498
And I just realized now you asked what Rockwell hardness is, not what it means.

It's essentially a formula. A industrial diamond (a charpy) is pressed into metal at 150kg for I think 3 seconds, and the depth/diameter of the hole made determines the hardness. I used to know the formula by heart, but since Rockwell machines are automatic now it's pretty pointless to know.
>>
>>32109525
Thanks for the recc, is that the same Hatcher that found the shattering Springfield receiver problem?

>>32109619
So is hardness related to things like wear resistance or is that a separate matter related to the grain?

Would you say a modern alloy pistol would be as durable (notwithstanding things like engineering faults) as thier older steel counterpart?
>>
>>32109664
Don't....diamonds shatter at that pressure?

20160821_103204.jpg
3MB, 4032x3024px
>>32109676
To a degree yes, hardness and wear resistance are connected. Of course the particular steel in question, and the exact geometry of it, along with heat treatment (to include case hardening) play into it as well.

To the second question, sort of. A modern pistol will, assuming it's been designed properly, be more rugged than one made 50 years ago. Most people aren't going to shoot enough to reach the limits of either though, so it's generally a moot point.

>>32109682
Not at all. They can chip or fracture though and then you have to replace the charpy, but that's not a big deal nor a common occurrence. It's also a very small tip, pic related.
>>
>>32109713
Generally would a slide be more or less hard than a frame? In an automatic design, how about the bolt and receiver?
>>
>>32109739
Honestly I can't say, because those are areas of design that I'm ignorant in. Like, I can see wanting a bolt to be harder than the receiver so that you won't deform the bolt under hard use. But then you might deform the receiver.

I know a lot about manufacturing and production, and a small amount of design philosophy for things like engines and automotive shit, but by and large I only know how to make stuff, not design stuff.
>>
>>32107031
This is like super fucking late but if there's a gunshow at reliant or George R Brown, they bump their prices down to something a little more sane so if you spot some old gun unpopular with fuds you can get it for a decent price if you don't want to shop online.

The shows in this area are usually so shit, especially for milsurp.
>>
>>32109785
I guess the hardness of the frame doesn't matter after a point because they wouldn't figure making it out of aluminum or polymer would make sense and planned obsolescence isn't something that really figures into many firearms that aren't Saturday night specials.

I just realized this is out of the purview of this thread, guess I'll try and make another one.

I try to shoot all my milsurp, nice or otherwise...

ammo cost is the biggest factor, but usually get at least 20rnds/year.

but my more common shooters will get several hundred.

Anytime my M41 Johnson leaves the safe i usually put at least 125 rounds through it.

my standard luger gets 50-100 rounds a week normally.

i clean my shit a lot, so the only real worry on condition is when shooting surp ammo, which i almost NEVER do anymore --- and even then the only nice gun I put surp in is my FN49.
