It was the commercial colors that they had available. None of the paint was specifically made for camouflage use so it has some shine and brightness to it. Paints for broke ass armies have often looked a little goofy. In WW1 everyone had sillypaint.
Regardless, those rifles were more concealed with the weird contrasting colors.

Rhodesia was the first country to standardize paint for their rifles because interrogations of prisoners repeatedly revealed that their black rifles were what was giving them away in the jungle. Not their uniforms, gear, or anything else. The paint used wasn't specifically designed to be flat. Rather, it was used because it adhered to metal and was very durable.
