It was a comet, but Jupiter's gravitation thorn it into shreds before the impact, so it looked a bit like planetary carpet bombing, really spectacular. Some were even suggesting the planed could explode or set ablaze. Happened around 1997 or so, IIRC.

Every time I eat Taco Bell
>>32086001
the planet is jupiter. It was a comet that collided with it in '93 called Shoemaker-Levy 9. Now, if you know anything about how big that planet is you can tell the scope of the eruption when it impacted. The equivalent of 6 million megatons of TNT, by contrast all ordnance used in WWII was just 3 megatons
>>32086001
comet broke up into 13? pieces IIRC before impacting, got torn apart by jupiter's gravity on it's way towards it

I own that magazine.
I didn't really understand what I was looking at at the time (It was before I discovered /k/)
