Hey /k/ is anyone here into HAM radio. i have a /k/ friend who lives in Finland, im in Australia. we have been thinking about trying to get into radio but i'm not sure if i could even get a emitter that would let me talk that far out.

anyone have experience with this and could throw some information my way?

Depends on antenna, band, solar conditions, ERP, and transmission mode. Unless you want to learn code or spend a lot of money, you won't have reliable communication. Look at DMR and the DV4 digital dongle.

I'm a decent coder, i'm studying computer science at ANU.

No, not that kind of code. Dots and dashes, Morse code. I should have been more clear.

Man, Finland to Australia is going to be really difficult even with a good setup

It sucks. I had to learn it when I got licensed in 1995. It's an old man mode.

whats a realistic kind of range id be looking at out of australia then for a decent set up designed for long range.

Depends on band and propagation as well as antenna type and ERP. Is it possible to talk around the world on 100watts and a wire? Yes. Would it be better to have a 1200watt linear amp and a 3 element yagi? Hell yeah. So there isn't a great answer. Even if you have antennas for 20m and 40m and 100watts you will get a lot of joy out of ham radio.

Old mil.spark here, with license. Many of my fellow sparks are licensed. I think it was encouraged.

If you know what you are doing, a 10 W transmitter on the HF band will take you around the world. Literally. As in hearing your own echo 1/7th second later. Morse is the way to go, digital modes work even better. Voice is far more limited but intercontinental contact is possible.
