Hey /k/,
Got my first gun today: Mossberg 500 Maverick 88. Do you guys think it's a good beginner's gun? The only other guns I've shot are black powder rifles.

anyway First Gun General.
What was your First Gun?

also, If you happen to be knowledgeable about this particular shotgun, I have a few questions.
1. When I was taking it apart, I noticed the Trigger Locking Pin did not come out as easily as it seemed to in the videos, I had to hammer it out a little bit (maybe I'm just weak but...)
2. The Trigger Mechanism did not go in as easily as it seemed to in the videos.

I'm willing to guess maybe they weren't lubricated enough or rather I just wasn't doing it exactly right, but I was curious what you guys thought.
>>
>>32077591
I mean it's pretty much the bottom dollar shotgun. It's a start, don't think it's anything it's not like a certain Soviet rifle that shall not be named.

I would have killed to get a real one but I don't even know if they're legal (the real ones I mean, since they're auto)
>>
>>32077591
>What was your First Gun?

Nugget, yes I fell for the meme. Gonna keep it though.

Yes, the 88 is a fine first fun.

>1.

You mean the pin that holds the trigger assembly? It's supposed to be snug. You should be worried if it comes out too easily.

>2.

Should just rock right back in, as always reassemble with care.
>>
>>32077624
I'm not sure what a Tokarev SVT-40 has to do with this.
>>
>>32077670
yea the trigger assembly pin, well that's a relief

also yea I kinda mashed the plastic a little, nothing serious, but it was a bitch to get it slide in like it's supposed to.
>>
The first rifle i bought myself was a Mosin of course, 1926 tula. I was 18.
>>
>>32077591
It's a start. I usually recommend it to no guns people who come in looking at cheap shotguns.
Especially over that chink Stevens 320.

Also it's Mossberg Maverick 88, not "Mossberg 500 Maverick 88".
They're different modles. My autism is triggered.
>>
>>32077714
sorry man lol
>>
>>32077648
>>32077676
Mosin, the bottom dollar soviet rifle that """people""" think is the best thing since tits.
>>
>>32077591
The mossberg 500 and mossberg maverick 88 are technically two different guns. The maverick is a cheaper version of the 500, but not all parts are interchangeable between the two.
>>
>>32077624
Not sure what the glorious works of Sergei Simonov have to do with this desu

>>32077591
not a bad choice anon, entry level shotgun but mossberg makes a good one. keep it clean and it will serve you well. if you want another rifle sometime, look at a 10/22, it's a great first rifle.
>>
>>32077698
very nice, I saw a couple in the shop I was in. They looked smaller than I thought they would, so maybe they weren't real ones.

probably too much $289

I got mine for 100$ less than that at Walmart but that's a pretty standard price at most LGS' so don't feel bad.
>>

Used is where it's at for pump actions. You can find a used 500 for as low as $175 depending.
>>

damn! I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

>>32077591
also, I forgot to mention in my OP, I was looking to get a Swiss k-31 as my first but the market dried up or something? anyone know what's goin on with them these days?
>>
>>32077591
first gun was a rem 700 bdl in 30-06 that i bought at bass pro.

I was anti military rounds when i was 18 and thought i was a special snowflake by not buying into the 77$ mosin hype.

First handgun was a sig 226 blackwater edition, Got it around the time sandy hook happened, and learned about what a gun panic was the hard way. I was buying 40$ boxes of +p+ that only held 20rnds about once a month because thats all that was in stock for the whole year of 2013 in california.

Another first time shooter mistake was the "dont shoot with ear protection because its not like real life" phase. Now i have ringing in my ears and random deafness in my right ear.

the mossman is a solid gun, the first time i shot clays i shot with an 88. good choice.

also dont fuck around with disassembling your gun without thoroughly reading the manual. i broke my marlin 60 by accident because i didnt read the manual.
>>
>>32078011
oh yea I definitely read the manual first lol
>>
>>32077936
Well the thing was, I didnt know any better. Growing up, when my dad would take me hunting, all we shot was a ruger mk2 22lr handgun, a 10/22, and a winchester 94 in 307. None of these were loud. When I joined the army at 18 we only shot 556, and in open areas, so it still wasnt loud. Then I got my 30-06 and naturally thought it was supposed to be that loud because it was a larger caliber. I started wearing hearing protection at 21 when i got my sig 226, because that shit made my ears ring. Not even the m9 i shot in the army was that loud. I also didnt shoot at civilian ranges and mostly shot in open areas of public land, so the sound dispersed more.

Idk was just retarded and wasnt in a situation for me to actually notice the hearing problem until that 226.

>>
>>32078074
The army doesnt use 30-06 anymore. I meant military rounds such as 556 or 762.

Like I said, was 18. Now I know way more about this shit. I trial and error'd my way into this hobby. Luckily I had a disposable income which allowed me to buy a shit ton of guns and accessories to dick around with. For instance, I bought a aimpoint t2 that is now a paperweight in my gun closet because I learned I prefer a 1-6x optic instead. I also bought a rem 700 heavy in 308 that i put in an XLR chassis, that I have since put away in the closet for good. And have switched to a winchester 70 in a mcmillan hunters edge stock, due to it having a much smoother action and overall lighter weight. Also gave up on my 226 after "upgrading" it with g10 slim grips, short reach trigger, short reset, and orange front/green rear tritium sights. I went through a 1911 phase and ended up getting a colt anviii, and then gave that up and switched to a gen4 g19 that is pretty much stock except the trigger and sights.
>>
>considering buying my first gun as well

I was considering starting off with an FAL. Most of the ones I saw online were either hideously expensive or reputed for being monkey models, but I did find a site that sold FAL kits for pretty cheap - and old versions too, ones that didn't have the reputation of the new ones.

So I was considering buying a brazilian kit (with supposedly matching serial numbers throughout) from http://www.gunthings.com/falkits.htm for $585. My question is - is that a distributor with a poor reputation, is that a good deal, and will I likely need to go looking for extra parts?

Sorry for being such a newfag.

It IS part of the five hundred series.

The 500 defender is a maverick by all technical aspects except name.

Also the only differences between a full price 500 and an 88 should be...

The forends might be different depending on year of manufacture. The normal 88 forend is garbage and will need to be replaced by about 5k shells

The trigger housing assembly is plastic, which honestly doesn't matter in the slightest.

The safety is located on the plastic trigger housing and the receiver is not machined for the fancy top safety of the full price 500.

It's hencho is mexico. assembled in the US
>>
>>32077755
You do know that there's different types of nuggets, right?

Doesn't matter which one you get, though. They're garbage rods, all of them.

>>
>>32079450
Jesus your bait is too good. 7.62/10

Did you fall for the nugget meme that you have to justify your ammo as being used by modern military? Sorry my 18 year old self thought he was special snowflake and didnt want to buy a 77$ rifle because he had an income.

Obviously you dont know how to read, because if you did you would be making welfare queen jokes instead of daddies money jokes, since I did say I was in the mil and had a disposable income from all that free money we get from your parents taxes.

You do know in current time US military no one uses 30-06 or 7.62x54r right? Because if you do....I got some news for you kid. Extra Extra you're retarded.

And just to explain myself for why I had to trial and error my way through firearms is
1)was stuck in commiefornia at the time, so I couldnt just go and rent any gun i want.
2)How would I know what accessories or parts would be better in/on a gun without physically using/testing one out in person?

We cant all be internet experts like yourself. Maybe I should go visit one of your forums, is it arfcom or reddit where you get your info?
>>

For 300$ thats pretty good. Cant even get a shitty glock for less than 400 nowadays.

You know if you saved up to ~400 you could get a brand new ruger american pistol. Compact or full size. They are actually very good for the money

Definitely the CZ shadow if you can afford it. If you can't, it's worth waiting and spending extra 100. I trained on this pistol in Moscow (and I'm more of a Walther/sig sauer guy) but this was one of the best pistols I ever shot. You need to be retarded to miss your target with this 9mm
>>
Hey a thread relevant to the questions I've been asking a lot lately.

I am trying to pick a first gun and have narrowed my choice down to two: a Finnish m39 nugget,or a chinese surplus sks.

which would be a better gun for a college poorfag that probably wont be able to buy another gun for at least a year or two?
>>
>>32081774
sks. if you dont have money for a second gun you cant afford nugget ammo. that said sks is a shitty choice as a poorfag gun too. build an ar for maximum cost effectiveness.
>>
>>32081520
>can't even get a shitty glock for less than 400 nowadays
This is so bullshit. Glock knows their guns aren't worth that much but they still get away with it because of the retarded fanboys.

I'm not gonna bash Glock. They're decent pistols. But because of fanboyism and vidya gaems, the price has inflated to stupid levels.
>>
>>32081905
I was looking at PSA kits. They come with instruction manuals, right? I have never disassembled a firearm before so this will be a bit of a jump for me.

VZ2008's despite their shortcomings are solid rifles...

>>32082262
ive done this twice in california of all places. the key is to be patient, dont expect it to be there. just have some spare cash to jump on it if one shows up on a used rack. one was 150 the other one was 200. the 150 one had light surface rust and the furniture was fucked. the action on it is the best action ive felt on a pump the previous owner shot the fuck out of it.
the other was a almost brand new 7shot with an ati stock. seemed like it was taken to the range once and the owner was a complete bitch who gave up and sold it.
both times this happened the gun had just been put on the used rack that day.

Maverick 88 has a crossbar safety. It's not a 500.

1. I get the pin out with a pen by pressing hard, it becomes a lot easier after a few times field stripping it

2. You really need to press the slide bars to the sides of the receiver flush, and drop the assembly in straight.
