Ammo selection in SHTF

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 140

Ok fellas, lets assume that I have "some friends" that are training and prepping for some approaching SHTF scenario.

I've decided on 5.56 as the team main caliber for the obvious reasons:
volume+duration fire to weight ratio
commonality
availability
external ballistic/terminal effect to weight ratio

Here is the question:
What ammo type would be best, considering making a hit through cover is likely more important that creating a more grievous injury. A wounded person is significantly less effective than an uninjured one.

Does SP struggle too much with barrier penetration?

Is xm193 too much of a trade? Not doing anything well?

Is M855 too lacking in terminal to make up for better barrier defeat?

Will I ever be able to get my hands on M855A1 master race??
>>
Not gonna lie dude this whole thing sounds pretty autistic

https://www.policeone.com/police-products/firearms/accessories/ammunition/articles/7251807-Why-Black-Hills-Barnes-TSX-is-the-first-purpose-built-police-patrol-rifle-load/

>Jeff experimented with several projectiles and the Barnes TSX offered great promise until it was turned against the barriers of the FBI eight-part testing protocol used to evaluate handgun projectiles. Frequently, the TSX projectiles would expand fully then have the exposed petals shear off when penetrating the barriers or when fired from longer barreled weapons at very close range. The resulting slug was almost like a .22 caliber wadcutter bullet which gave excessive penetration and reduced overall terminal effect.

>So, Jeff worked with Barnes to design a custom variation of the TSX, exclusive to Black Hills, which would hold together while penetrating the test barriers and still expand dramatically when it reached a human target. Knowing police agencies frequently have a mix of 5.56mm weapons, including M16A1 rifles on loan from the LESO program, he chose a 50-grain bullet which will work effectively in all weapons from 1/12 to 1/7-inch twist rates.

>Now available in a full-power 5.56mm load, the Black Hills Ammunition 50 grain Barnes TSX round is the first purpose-built police patrol rifle load. In testing, Jeff found the new bullet design was almost totally barrier blind, giving excellent expansion and deep penetration from almost any barrel length from 20 inches down to eight inches. The only downside to the tougher design is expansion drops off dramatically past 75 yards from an eight inch barrel out to 200 yards from a 16 inch barrel.

You can either pick expansion/fragmentation at long range or barrier penetration ability.

Both is currently only a thing for M855A1 and that comes with its own issues regarding extremely high pressure and price.

Short answer is whatever you can find.

XM193 is best bet. You'll get adequate penetration, its cheap and abundant to stock.

XM855 will do in a pinch, even if it doesn't reliably kill.

XM-855A1 will beat your gun to death with no logistical support to replace it. Assuming you can actually have a stock of it.

If you have more money than brains, stock up on some open tip defense rounds.

>>32074566
>considering making a hit through cover is likely more important that creating a more grievous injury
You have that backwards when it comes to 5.56. It sucks at penetration anyway, due to it's low bullet weight, and the fact that hits are bound to be down range where it doesn't have that 3000fps velocity anymore, so you actually should be coveting terminal ballistics when you consider 5.56 SHTF loads. And if you are looking for cheap, then the answer is M193. And real M193, not some knockoff that is simply a 55gr FMJ.
>>
>>32074566
I would rather buy a shitload of XM193 and replacement parts than a small qty of ultra advanced ammo

>>
>>32075655
>Not OP, but I want to stock ammo as well. I see people mentioning M193, but that seems like poorfag ammo, and I've heard it's a bad choice for self defense.
M193 works really well against flesh but if you are looking at the 100% best anti-personnel rounds you need the 64gr Speer Gold Dot LE ammunition. It costs nearly twice as much but will perform a lot better out of short barrels and within 200yd.

If your only concern is killing shit dead and you have unlimited budget and space just buy a 240 or similar 308 mg
>>
>>32075491
>>32075754

no you shouldn't

defeating cover causing at least some injury. trying to maximize injury dont do anything when your speer gold dot fails to punch through a tiny sapling.
>>
>>32074566
For 556

Stick with m193 unless you can afford a stockpile of 177gr match ammo, or can actually get more than 500rnds of 855a1. Remember that 855 is not 855a1

If you want a sugestion for a precision rifle to take down barriers get 30-06. Super common. And price wise cheaper due to fact heavy 308 non fmj bullets are expensive.

Ya if u can get it.

If you got the cash just get black hills 77gr. Might be hard to get a bulk order, but thats what i would do.

I have 2 seperate optics on 2 geissele mounts. One for 55gr and one for 77gr match. They are return to zero mounts. The 55gr is for range fun, and the 77gr is for classes and shtf dreams.
>>
There is the distinct smell of mall ninja all over this thread.

Xm193 and call it good.
Xm855 might be a tiny bit better for shooting through stuff.
Both are plentiful and cheap.

If neither of those has enough punch say forget it and get something chambered in 7.62x39 , and get hornady ammo loaded with SST projectiles. Good expansion, and way more barrier penetration than most any 5.56. And still under ¢70 / round most anywhere you buy it.
>>
>>32074566
855 has a little better at penetration. However, production quality of lake city has been shit for a while now. I've gotten some batches that averaged 5-7inch groups. The european stuff doesn't seem to suffer as much.

193 should be adequate. In a shtf, you probably shouldn't be engaging people at more than 200 yards. You're just pissing away ammo.

You can get the nicer hollabacks. But decent rounds are more expensive and you'll come right back to using 193 and 855. My tavor shoots sub moa with 77gr but at 75-1.50 a round, its impractical to stock up on.

Say I come across someone's stash of 150rds of 44mag. i don't have a gun for it. neither is there a gun for it in the house (that I can can find). Do you think I'm just leaving the ammo? No, depending on my load atm and the likelihood of me finding a gun for it soon, I either take all the ammo and squirrel it away somewhere or I may even go so far as to outright destroy it or at least take the powder with me in a ziploc bag. Leaving ammo would only invite the chance that it may be used against me later by somebody. In SHTF, I basically use scorched earth tactics.
>>
>>32074566
Does the MK-262 contain lead? I'd rather not use it for hunting if it does, since it basically explodes upon contact.

Also, if it doesn't contain lead, would that make an optimal round for deer hunting and self defense as far as 5.56 goes? I'm trying to decide whether the fragmentation of the MK-262 or the expansion of something like the Hornady 75gr TAP offers better wounding potential.

They are optimized for different wounding vectors though. Once relies on fragmentation while the other maximizes expansion.

Also, the MK-262 greatly lowers the velocity threshold necessary for fragmentation. From a pure velocity standpoint, they are therefore not comparable.

rifle hollow points don't work like pistol hollow points. They don't open up like a flower.

Go watch some Youtube videos then. Their fragmentation patterns are completely different.

Since this abortion of a thread is kind of about hard to get ammo, I'd just like to check in and remind everyone that I still have half a case of golden tiger 7.62x39 waiting if some shit ever pops off.

The only ammo I've ever bothered to chrono and it shot 100fps faster than whitebox and 150-200 faster than tulammo out of my AMD-65. With less flash. Fucking way less, which is amazing considering the AMD-65's brake.

>he bought into the /pol/ meme

The movie is a fairly blatant rendition of exactly why 3rd worlders immigrating to the west and multiculturalism is an atrocious thing to support. Try forming your own opinion on art rather than parroting what others want you to believe.

viewpoints differ mate. As I see it, the white people have been shown to be the monsters again, the one nigger on Elysium was not a monster, the earthlings are all great and noble and only violent because they are opressed....

/pol/ is always right btw. It's funny but /pol/, a part of a chinese cartoon website, is a site with more integrity than CNN et al.

>Does the MK-262 contain lead?
Yes.

Lead free projectiles are TSX, GMX etc. Could be found searching for "monolithic copper alloy bullets"

From our armory guy it increases wear something like 8-10 times faster. We didn't have problems with it but we had new m4s in good condition. So a new quality build would be fine for hundreds to thousands of rounds but likely would not make it to tens of thousands without breaking something
>>
>>32075092
it kills the AR's "feedramp". they are thinking about nigger rigging something up with the magazine providing a disposeable protective feed ramp or some shit.
