There are some great PD trade in guns out there that can be picked up for a real bargain. Before Glock was in 4 out 5 law enforcement holsters, Smith and Wesson had the LE market cornered. The 5906 was one of the most popular LE handguns before polymer frames took over. Today you can find these guns for about $325 and other than some holster wear these guns have been hardly used.
>>
You really need to get yourself a blog.
>>
>>32074150
I have been looking for one for a year or two. I never see them anywhere, and when I do, some idiot wants like $600 for it, like it's some collectible. KEK

There had been a lull in availability of these guns, but, recently there seems to be quite a few of them available. These guns are a workhorse. They are milled from solid American made steel (Carpenter Technology). This is not a light gun at all. There is no feeling that any part of this gun was under made or under engineered. This is one of the few sidearms that can double as a hammer and drive down railroad spikes. When you buy a PD trade in gun, you will get one that was maintained by a S&W trained and supported armorer. Even after a decade in service these guns rarely have more than 2000 rounds down the pipe. They have plenty of life in them. This one has some fun department markings as seen in the pic and there are some resources out there to help track down what PD used the gun you bought.

Idiot.

There are none in my area, nigger. Like I said, people are hoarding these lately for some reason. And when one does pop up, they want some stupid price.

These guns are DA/SA, with the DA pull in the 12lb range and the SA pull a short and smooth 5lbs. The external safety functions as a decocker, so there's no carry in SA with the safety on. These guns also have a magazine disconnect which is a sought after LE gun trait
>>
>>32074180
Where can i get one in Cali?
>>
The 5906 comes from the factory with Novak sights that are adjustable for windage. The prevalence in the LE market means there is still a decent aftermarket for these guns and they are still popular in PPC shooting.
>>

>2lb range and the SA pull a short and smooth 5lbs.
>no carry in SA with the safety on
>magazine disconnect
So its a piece of shit, gotcha
>>

You need help. Open a new window in your browser and type "gunbroker" into your search bar. You can't find it on a street corner. It's not like a drug broker. You find it online. Now go do that now.

Forgot sight pic. You can see the serrated hammer that's easily operated with gloved in the winter.

Worst case, you can get the Lionheart LH9 which is based on the Daewoo DP51 which is based on the 5906
>>
>>32074202
I think Cali police used to use 4006s

When you buy a trade in gun, you usually only get one mag, which with gun isn't a problem. Magazines are still easy to find both from S&W, Mecgar and others. There are even 33 round mags available. Replacement springs are still stocked.

>>32074211
Not at all. It's a classic LE gun that is rock solid and never fails. The reason for the mag disconnect is that if a LEO is fighting for retention of the weapon, the mag can be dropped and the gun is useless, at which time you draw your back up and shoot for center mass (I worked for an agency that used this gun and taught this drill).

This particular trade in that I bought was fitted with rubberized Houge grips, which are large but comfortable and make for a perfect grip each time.

>4006s
There were some reliability issues with the .40 in this frame (the TSW series). While this gun is no longer for sale new in the consumer market, it's still being made for agency sales as well as the DA only 5646 (Still issued by the RCMP and NYPD).

Occasionally you will see Cabelas selling a brand new 5900 series that S&W is providing for the consumer market. These are rare with most Cabela's only getting one or two and they're priced at $750 or more.

There is a character limit and single image per post limit. If you don't like what I'm posting you can find a /meg/ thread and go shit there.
>>
I want to get a 5906 with a squared trigger guard and:
>cerakote the frame, safety and hammer tungsten gray
>cerakote the slide, trigger, slide release and magazine release in a bright metallic finish (for contrast)
>remove the magazine disconnect
>fit it with Novak style sights
>use Crimson Trace grips colored foliage green
>replace old 14rd factory mags with brand new flush fitting 17rd mags from MecGar
>have a custom holster made from some kind of nice full grain leather
>>
>>32074298

/k/ is for conversations and discussions involving multiple people.

Wordpress is for one-man blogs.

I appreciate that you are passionate about guns, but I think most people have no idea what kind of conversation you want to have with this thread.
>the 5906 is great
OK. Those of us who know about guns already knew that, and those of us who don't know about guns will only use this information as a starting point for their own research. You aren't inviting discussion. You're just talking at people and expecting them to talk back.
>>
>>32074438
And other are discussing this gun. You not a moderator, janitor, or the site owner. So I really don't care what you think /k/ is about or for. If you don't like what I posted you can hide this thread or be the little bitch you are, take to IRC, and cry in hopes of getting the post deleted.

I'd rather talk about PD trade in guns, you know on goddamn weapons board. Why do you go back to /cry/

>>no carry in SA with the safety on
The 1911 is really not that amazing grandpa.
>>
>>32074481
Other than the bullseye and collector market, the 1911 has been dead for decades. It's been 40 years since it had any LE market share. It was never much of a CCW gun as it was too large. It's been 36 years since the 1911 was the official sidearm of the U.S. military - although some stayed in service in limited number with specialized units. The 1911 isn't just your grandpa's gun, it's a grandpa of a gun that's long past its prime.

Why in the world would you want a turd gen Smith semi? A steel frame at that! Why not get one of the alloy 4-series turd gens?

>>32074177
>no feeling that any part of this gun was under made or under engineered
Tell that to my department armorer. Mine is on its third extractor since they're -very- prone to chipping
That said - both times it was discovered was right before a 100 round range qual, and both times it got through it without any FTEs before being repaired, so at least I can brag about that.

>>32079437
As somebody who lugs one every day - everything.
The trigger pull is a mile long and not smooth, both original grips are awkward, the factory sights are garbage, it's a heavy boat anchor even by all-steel standards, and it's a bitch and a half to clean in all the nooks and crannies.
Reliability is fine, accuracy is mediocre, holster selection is sparse.

There's a lot of guns I'd pick before the turd gens if I were given the choice, frankly.
>>
>>32079722
Someone seems really made.

>>32080064
>Why in the world would you want a turd gen Smith semi?
They are rock solid guns that just don't fail.
>>
>>32080084
I really soured on mine the second time the extractor got chipped under normal use in four years. That's really unacceptable for a service gun in my book, even if it did manage to get through 100 rounds both times with half the extractor hook chipped off.

I check it habitually now after every time I shoot it - certainly not something that inspires confidence.
>>
>>32080064
>As somebody who lugs one every day - everything.
Why don't you post a time stamped picture of the one you carry? Let's see if it has the squared or rounded trigger guard.

It lives in my locker when I'm not at work and don't have a reason to drag my belt home, so no time stamps.
Here's the last time I felt the need to take a picture of it. Round guard, if it matters to you.

It's a 5946, if the hammer and lack of a safety doesn't clue you in.
>>
>>32080283
Sure it does. No timestamp. Lack of decocker, so it's not a 5906.
>>
>>32080288
They're fundamentally the same gun, aside from small parts differences in the slide.
>>
>>32074150
My friend has one of these, or a very similar model, that his dad bought new in the '80s or '90s. It's a really nice shooter.

I don't think I'd buy one at full retail today, given the competition, but if you can find one of those PD guns in good shape I'd say it's a good choice, particularly if you're adding to a collection and not buying it as an only gun.

>>
>>32082125
You're right it's a modern handgun that's sought after both in the CCW market as well as entering service with law enforcement agencies and armed forces around the world.
>>
>>32082125
Also, I get the feeling that you're a nogunz CoD expert.
>>
>>32074150
You folks are forgetting one thing.

Customer support. S&W has discontinued customer support for their entire 3rd gen series.

Parts break. Parts wear out. What then?
>>
>>32083227
There are still plenty of parts available for these guns and gunsmiths will keep working on them. Do you really expect to send a gun back to S&W for repair work? The most common items to replace, springs, are still easily bought from Wolff and others.
