Did some scouting yesterday in a new unit in Idaho. Haven't hunted in about 13 years, going to start again next October.
>>
How do I into hunting? I really don't know where to begin
>>
>>32059772
Bumping this question.
I live in CA and virtually everyone I know is a liberal, family included. I bought the book from the guy that did Meat Eater and I've been researching hunting a bit.
Just don't know how to exactly make the transition from theory to practice.
Any and all advice appreciated.
>>
>>32059849
Also, what is the range of animals I can hunt with .338 lapua?
>>
>>32059894

Depends on how good of a shot you are. Lapua keeps it's velocity just fine out at 900 yards.

I wouldn't shoot anything smaller than an elk with that round. elk, bear and moose. everything else and you're destroying way too much meat.
>>
>>32059063

Hard NNW wind blew so hard yesterday that I had little chance of seeing something in a still-hunt because even though I was downwind of the crop field I started on, I was on the wrong side of all the hills and brushpiles they use for wind cover.

About halfway through the day, as we assessed the situation, I put the other hunters on spots that made a wide semi-circle around these areas and then made a safe man drive. Some deer were spotted, no shooters. We only kill horns on our family land.

I'll probably go down to my personal lease and pop a meat doe, it's just such a drive because I specifically found a tract of land so far away from hunting club hotspots that there'd be a ton of deer and little pressure. I see at least a half-dozen every time I go.

It's just a little hard hunting this far before the rut, there's not a lot to motivate bigger deer to get out and about and expose themselves.
>>
>>32059063
I saw one doe smaller than my dog. No point shooting it. I'll go out later in the season and try again.

Is there any reason to wear camo if you have to wear hunter orange?
>>
>>32063307
Helps break up your outline against the surrounding grass, leaves, bushes, whatever.

Deer cant see in color (or at least they can't see orange from what I understand), so the bright color of your vest/hat wont be a deterrant.
I've been with plenty of people dressed in just blue jeans and an earth-toned long sleeve shirt that hasnt seemed to hinder their hunting experience very much, if at all.
>>
>>32059063
8 days until rifle deer season starts here, so no hunting. Plus, unless you're hunting coyotes or crows, there's no sunday hunting here.

Both of these things have been debunked.

Durr season opened in my state last Saturday, and ends tomorrow.
I've only been able to go out a few days because of work, and every day I've went out I sat in the cold woods alone fighting sleep and saw nothing.
First year since I've been hunting that I've seen nothing, and first time in like five years that I haven't killed one.
Very butthurt over here family.

I guess maybe it's a good thing that I didn't see one though, I'm almost afraid of what 7mm RM would do to an eastern Whitetail.
>>
>>32063307
I wear it because the camo is usually made specifically meant for hunting so it's very warm, comfy, wind and water proof etc. Honestly you could wear just about anything practical and be fine. Other seasons such as turkey and waterfowl camo is a lot more important though.

I heard some people saying that you wear orange stuff while moving to a location, but you take it off when you sit down to hunt.
>>
I don't hunt. I buy my meat at the store, so no animals are hurt.

I can tell that you looked at the comment section in hunting videos. Those idiots ruin everything.
>>
>>32059063
Don't hunt on other's property without permission. Just go ask a bunch farmer's if you can hunt on their land. They'd probably be happy to let you hunt there or maybe charge a small fee. The deer eat their crops.
>>
>>32059063
I saw 6 deer the first day and maybe 10 the second.
First day had a big 8 pt buck walk within 15 ft of me. Where I'm at it's extremely dense so I can only see maybe 50 ft max. Couldn't raise my shotgun in time to shoot him before he ran off.
As a first time hunter it was a great trip going with my dad and uncle and getting to spend time with them.
>>
>>32063435
Lets see your source then.
>>
>>32059063
I'll be getting started later than normal this year due to school and shit. I don't even have a spot atm and haven't been able to scout. I've been talking to my gf's dad and hopefully he'll let me hunt behind his house. He usually fills his tags every year, but they still have a full freezer so he's not hunting this go round.
>>
>>32060973
so...no quail then?

What's the ideal hunting round to stockpile for survival purposes? Something that's capable of taking everything on the North American continent.
>>
>>32066838
308 can, to be honest. But if you're looking for more oomph, 300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, .45-70 can do it with some more gusto.
>>
>>32066861
Well I do have a lot of .308 for my SCAR 17S, but I've heard it isn't recommended for larger game like elk/moose or for defending against bears.

Here's the buck I took on opening day of muzzleloader in TN. Rifle opened yesterday but I've got work all this week, so my chances of going are slim right now
>>
>>32066880
Get some AP 30-06 and pull the bullets, load them in 308. There's your 'fuck you smokey' rounds for your 17S.

180gr nosler partition 308 is fine for elk. Hell, a .270 can do it fine. Any animal bigger, and fud lore says to go with a magnum round
>>
>>32059063
just finished my deer season in ND
hunted a new unit that I've never been in, hoped that the land would be as open as my home unit. Nope, everything is posted the fuck up and the public land has more dudes go through it than a seasoned whore.
due to the DAPL protest shit, i opted to not knock on doors in fear of getting a gun shoved in my face.
finally saw a doe I could've shot yesterday, but i couldn't get a good broadside shot so I passed on it, and my tag went unfilled
>>
>>32063307
I've walked within 50 yards of a herd of deer in the legal minimum of orange color and normal denim, depends on how dumb your deer are i guess
