Yesterday I made a thread that died, but while it died I was out fingerfucking and shooting guns. I need a bolt gun that'll take down hogs and durr in South Texas, and I've narrowed down my search to...

>CZ 527 7.62x39
>Savage 11 Scout .308
>Tikka T3 Hunter .308
>Howa 1500 .308

All of these felt great, the Howa was by far the cheapest, the Tikka felt the best, but the price of ammo and available iron sights for the 527 was quite tempting. Seeing how x39 has similar ballistics to .30-30 it wouldn't be an issue hunting with it under 200 yards. The Savage felt cheap, but the action and trigger were solid, and it was about the price of the T3.

Anybody have experience with these for hunting deer, hogs, and coyotes?

T3

The only one from that list that I've handled is the T3 when I put a few rounds through my friend's at the range. The next bolt action I buy is going to be a Tikka from that experience.

And for x39, you're really not saving that much money if you buy good ammunition.

I did quite like the T3, but for the wood stock it's a bit pricey. I could just get a synthetic model as well.

As a general question, how are Kimber's rifles? They looked quite nice, felt nice, but having firsthand experience with shitty Kimber handguns I'm wary of them.
>>
I'm getting a Weatherby Vanguard S2, which is built around a Howa. I would recommend that over the Tikka, in that the stock on the Tikka feels hollow and poor in quality in comparison. I hear they fixed that with the T3x, though, and it's not like it makes it a bad gun by any means.
Sorry I don't have anything better to contribute, I just figured I'd throw it out there if you hadn't already considered it.
I'd say x39 should do you fine, but I cannot imagine there's much of a price difference between that and .308?

that should already have tipped you off.

I was looking at the Tikka but now that concerns me. Do you know if they make vanguards for lefties?

Get the tikka if you can afford it. It's a sub 6lb rifle in that stock, and mine shoots half MOA in it; there's nothing wrong with it. It also has the smoothest bolt and nicest trigger I've shot.
>>
>>32058873
They don't. Their Mark V's come left handed if you decide to dropping $2000 on a rifle is in the cards. Shooting a bolt action from the opposite shoulder isn't impossible, and do keep in mind that lever action are still very much viable.
>>
>>32058873
I wouldn't worry about it, and if it's anything to you, the T3 was my first choice - I just went for Weatherby because I got a good deal on it, and there's a kit available to make it take box magazines. I don't know where you stand on the DBM vs. hinged floor plate issue, but I'm more partial to box magazines.

Bump, just finished shooting a couple rifles including a Browning X-Bolt, CZ 527, and Tikka T3

The Tikka T3 felt real cheap, it's an older model but it's also only worth about $400. The Browning was smoother and the stock felt really nice, but the CZ was my favorite and much more pleasant to shoot.

Fuck this is gonna be tough choosing.

I have a Tikka T3x adjustable and the hollowness of the old plastic stocks are totally gone except on the lite model. They also fixed other stuff that people complained about so I would say get the Tikka.
>>
>>32058246
If you're considering 7.62x39, just get an AK.
>>
>>32058246
CZ 557 in .308?
>>
>>32061699
Good rifle, but not great.
You can get a better rifle for just a little bit more money.
>>
>>32061699
I'd do the 550 over the 557; they took a lot of 'cheap' manufacturing shortcuts to make the 557 cost less.
>>
>>32061304
But I don't want an AK, I want a manual action that is suitable for backpacking or hunting.

I have a bunch of autoloaders, and I'm finding them quite boring.

>>32061699
I considered it, but if I bought a CZ rifle it would be either the 527 in x39 or the 550 FS which is hard to find in my area.
>>
>>32063449
Howa mini or <insert levergat here>
>>
>>32058246
>Savage 11 Scout
About the same price as the Cz, also has iron sights, and is chambered in a better round for all around purposes. That being said I'd love to have a Cz 527 for plinking.
>>
Just put together a 24" AR15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel. All I need to do is get glass for it.
>>
>>32063728
I have 2 ARs, I don't want another currently. Also that's much more expensive than just buying one of these guns.

>>32063706
Both the CZ and Scout have irons, the Scout feels a bit cheap but the action is smooth enough and trigger is good.
>>
>>32063749
We'll I'm really only putting money down for half a gun (like $700), since 6.5G uses the same lower receiver as a standard 5.56 chambering. I already have a normal AR so I just switch out the uppers.
>>
>>32064214
I still would prefer to have a manual action of sorts. I move in between states often, and some states don't allow autoloaders for hunting.
>>
>>32065125
Good point. Getting a bolt action is next on the agenda. Any general pointers/tips for picking one out?
