I'm looking to buy a handgun for the first time. My budget is ~$700. I have no experience buying firearms. What should I get?
This list is actually pretty good. Would recommend finger fucking all the guns in your gun store before buying though.
Also, thinking of concealed carry, or is this going to be a nightstand gun?

Walther P99AS
Better than a Glock in every way except aftermarket.
Glock 19 is always the answer.

This.
They really are better than a Glock.
It'll be nightstand for now. I'd like to get concealed carry eventually, but I would rather have a handgun first.
Also, is there a significant difference between glock 17 and 19?

Size

Slight difference in size. Any gun shop that has one probably has both, so just go check them out.

Missing a hi-power
What is going to be the intended primary purpose of your gun? Remember that there isn't a gun that's best at everything, only some guns that can do many things fairly well, and that there are always tradeoffs involved.

Bought one. Loved it. Had to sell it during financial hardship. You won't be sorry with one.

The glock 19 is a much better size for concealed carry, it's about the biggest gun most people can carry concealed practically.

Almost any polymer-frame 9mm should cost under $700.

My P99 brother. The P99 grip is awesome.

You should look into a FNS-9 Compact.
It's 9mm, between a Glock 19 and 26 in size, holds 12 rounds, has the option for a thumb safety if you want one, has a much better trigger than a Glock, and can be purchased with factory night sights for less than a new Glock 19 or 26.
Last request for now: Where is the best place to buy a said handgun? Would a local gunshop or a big names store like Scheels be best?

LGS can usually order anything they don't stock but they'll ask for a preorder fee as insurance.
You can try trusted sites like gunbroker or armslist.
