For those of us in the market for night vision, what are some things to look for and consider before dumping between $1500-$3000 on a device?
My original plan was Ambia Gen 2+ binocular from TNVC sister company, and an ATPAL C on my rifle.
Now I'm looking into the TNVC PVS-14 OMNI VIII by L3 as a device. I know it's double the cost but the risk of tube damage from over exposure of light makes me want to steer away from a Gen 2+ device. That and gen 3 has better resolution...
Anyway... thoughts?
Gen 2 is agrbage. Gen 3 is where it is at and so-called Gen 3+ with pinnacle tubes are the state of the art. I have been watching the market since 2007 and I have not seen the good stuff for under $3,500 ever.
Well funded teams use NV for operating and thermals for scanning.
OP your pic looks like something out of the first season of True Detective
OP here at work on phone. Why would gen 2+ be garbage though? Because of no auto gating?
The unit I had in mind TNVC swears by.
But I understand quality comes with a price on gen 3 optics.
Also, TNVC told me PINNACLE cant withstand recoil as much as OMNI VII. I understand the image is better on a PINNACLE but I want something that can get "knocked around" and not shit the bed

NV is buy once cry once dude. Watch comparisons of Gen 2 and 3 on youtube.

if you don't willingly abuse the unit, tube damage won't be an issue. Auto-shutoff also has potential drawbacks, the systems used on some Soviet NV optics can be quite overzealous.

wat
unless you absolutely have to have the best there is, high-end Gen.2 is more than adequate for most tasks. IMO Gen.3 devices are only really worth the investment if you plan on using your unit frequently and in situations where lesser units would not be adequate.

define "good stuff."

Noooo no soviet stuff
Im looking for an American made PVS 14 like what TNVC offers, and im curious about their Ambia Gen2+ (new model D300) standard model, not the white phosphor one

I wasn't suggesting it.
I don't have any experience with Ambia but most people seem to have a positive opinion of them.
Have you looked at PVS-7s? I very much like mine.

I want something a little more light weight than a binocular style. Which is why the 14 or the Ambia are my top 2 choices. Thinking im just gonna suck it up and get the Gen 3 PVS14.
What is typical care and cleaning of a device?

I also wear glasses, so thats another reason I dont want binocular style
