Hey /k/ I need some assistance. I'm not very well versed on old firearms, especially Japanese ones. This rifle belonged to my grandfather, but I have no idea what I am looking at.
It still has the chrysanthemum on it, and some japanese but I have no clue what it says. I figure it's chambered in 6.5 jap.
Apart from being sporterized (disgusting) it seems to be in working order apart from years of dust.
Any input or info? What type of rifle is it?
It is pretty short which makes me think it may be a calvary carbine. And it still has a front sight which doesn't look like a straight up Arisaka infantry rifle.

I have a couple more shots of it.
>>32036708
Don't use it, the gun has holes drilled in it.

Type 38 of some kind. May have been a carbine but if it's sporterized you can't be sure. Any full photos of it?

Looks like it might have been, if the rear sights are as short as I think they are. You may be able to restore it though, it looks like only the stock was chopped.

Series 6 Mukden Type 38 carbine

I think you may be right. It looks as though it's missing the front and cleaning rod
>>32036765
Dah, see if you can buy a replacement stock. The barrel with the imperial seal has some value; but only if its got an intact stock.
>>32036762
Who does this to a stock? I don't understand the reason behind "sporterizing" a rifle. That little bit of wood you chop off isn't heavy.

Fuck no. That's not the point of this thread. I just want to know that it isn't uber valueable before I get rid of it. I fucking hate guns and the type of people who actually think it's OK to own them. No offense, but it wasn't my choice that my grandpa willed this to me. I had no idea that he was that type of person until this week after he died.
Basically at this point, just fuck him. I want to know how valuable this is, and if it's less than a few grand max, I'm torching it. Better to lose a bit of money than to put something like this back on the street.

I'll see if I can dig one up. Would be neat to take to the range but it's been decades since it's been shot. I didn't really even know much about my gramps service, or where he served.
Probably need to take it to a gunsmith to see if its even operable

>back on the street
i wonder if theres any documented case of some nignog using an arisaka in a crime.
as far as torching it, whatever kid, its your gun.

how does the bore look?
>>32036858
Trying to get a picture of it. Bore looks good. Surprisingly still well rifled.
Kinda a bitch getting a shot of it though.
This is as good as I got right now

If all the numbers match on the bolt and receiver and the rifling looks good, I'd say you have a good shooter on your hands. 6.5 Jap is a fun round, albeit expensive if you don't reload. I've looked around for T38 carbine stocks to replace mine, but I haven't found any for less than I paid for the rifle.

Fug, sorry about the horizontal photo

It's operable. You'd be hard pressed to find a Arisaka that isn't. Ammo, however, is not cheap nor is it particularly easy to find outside of the internet.
There are some stocks on Gunbroker right now if I'm not mistaken. You should also pick up a dust cover, as that's what the rifle was issued with and it looks pretty cool.

Well, since this was just dropped in my lap I wouldn't be opposed to spending some cash on it.
Thanks for the help guys. I am gonna hit the bed. Much appreciated.

Thanks, I'll definitely check it out.

It's a 6th series Type 38 carbine made in Hoten Arsenal in Chinese which was the captured Mukden Arsenal. The city is now known as Shenyang. It was an uncommon to rare Type 38 carbine.
Judging by the condition of the stock, it was probably imported into the country with all the other Chinese imports in the 1980s and then bubba proceeded to ruin it even more.

not him but literally every arisaka has a stamp that shows where it was fucking made

I have Frank and Macy's book on the Type 38s, but you can literally just google "Hoten arsenal Type 38" and find the same info.
