Actually French tanks were well respected by the Germans.

They got more use out of them than the French ever did!

Air strikes or coordinated attacks were about the only thing that could stop a Char B1 bis, the 'Eure' commanded by Captain Pierre Billotte destroyed thirteen Panzer III/IV's in a head on attack and retreated after being hit 140 times. Another B1 was reported to have overrun a German AT gun after it had expended it's own ammunition, simply driving over the gun.

Honestly if French leadership hadn't been so terrified of another Great War they could have struck Germany early, they had superiority in armor in 1939/40.

The US incorporated it mainly due in part of not having plans of their own for tanks. As a result, our tanks made in WW2 were mainly based off of this beauty of a French model.

Krauts soon learned to hit it's exposed tracks or aim at the ventilation blinds on the side.
Or to use 88mm against them.
Excellent tank, but overly complex, like with germans on the eastern front few years later, most of it's loses ware due to lack of petrol, or malfunctions to steering mechanisms, like the excellent, but overly complex steering mechanism.

Another example that even the best tool of war is useless without properly designed and executed tactic.

Still, it's fucking beautiful. Made a Matchbox 1:72 model when I was a kid...

Riveted armor was a common problem with most 20's and upwards to mid 30s tank designs, simply because it made tanks cheaper and easier to mass produce and the armor itself was quick and easy to replace in the field.

Than the Suoma S35 had cast armor, so if the french managed to remain the war, we'd most definitely see some aesthetic as fuck cast armor tanks.

M3 Lee was pretty much the king of North Africa until the Sherman arrived. It also did well in Burma against the Japs (not hard to do, I know).

The only country that had problems with it were Russia, who was using them against Panthers, Tigers, and upgunned Pz4s.

What time? The early 30's? Sure. But in 1939 Germany had Panzers III and IV as well as the czech 35 and 38.
French tanks typically didn't have enough crewmen and the commander also had to be the gunner, which overloaded him with tasks, they mostly didn't use radios, had unreliable suspensions, tracks and engines, and the tanks with enough armor and firepower to compete weren't built in enough numbers.

The last problem is the doctrine behind it, French tanks were used exclusively as infantry support.

>or aim at the ventilation blinds on the side.

No, please no. The ventilation grill weakspot is but a myth coming from one testimony of a German AT gun crew which claimed to have destroyed a B1 Bis by shooting at a black rectangle on the right side of the tank.
Problem, the grid covered a ventilation intake (which as such wouldn't have been blackened by exhaust fumes) and was located on the left side of the tank.

IMO they probably saw the opened (for a reason or another) hull door and shot it, effectively and logically destroying the tank.
The grill by itself was no weaker than the rest of the side armor, being made of several sloped plates.

>>32037841
>>32037988

Actually the modernizations of the B1 Bis were going that way.

First the B1 Ter which corrected most of the flaw of the B1 Bis (hull gun now had a +4°/-5° azimuth, improved naeder and gearbox, simplified assembly) as well as gaining more armor (from 60 to 70mm (75mm effective on the sides)).
However it was only intended as a stopgap solution while the B40 was being developed.

The 1st version of the B40 was to follow the B1 Bis layout, with a 75mm hull gun and a 47mm in the turret. However said turret would now host two crewmember and the 47mm would be a 47mm Mle.1934 RF, already installed on the Maginot line and much more powerfull than the 47mm SA35 of the B1 Bis.
Armor was upped to 80mm, a new 500hp Talbot engine and an oleo-pneumatic suspension (already tested on the B1 Ter) were fitted.

The 2nd version (pic related) ditched the hull gun and a new three-men turret, armed with a 75mm, was installed. Here one can see a French KV-1.

In the end three prototypes of the B1 Ter and one (unfinished) of the B40 were made. In July 1940 they were to be evacuated by sea toward North-Africa but the cargo ship was sunk by the Luftwaffe and now lay somewhere in the Gironde estuary.
The ship, the "Mécanicien-Principal-Carvin", also transported several 380mm guns destined to the Jean Bart.
