5.56/.223 bullets tend to be very unstable and tumble easily. Once that starts happening, they slow down very quickly. That causes significant wounds, but reduced penetration. One pellet of 00 buckshot is similar in weight to a 5.56 bullet, but the spherical shape means tumbling is a non-issue.

i like my .25 acp, wont be loud or anything, if someone breaks in just pop pop pop 9 rounds into them and i dont think they'll be doing any robbing

5.56 will still penetrate drywall, but it will start to fragment. Using special frangible ammunition would help minimize over penetration as well.

Also Ruger Mini-14s are underrated but a Mossberg 500 with #4 shot will work and be much cheaper.

You can use bird shot. At close range it's practically a slug and if it goes through the wall it won't have much power on the other side so you should collateral anyone

Birdshot is for birds, not people. Humans have actually survived point blank hits with it. It's not lethal enough to be HD ammo nor safe enough to be nonlethal. Stick with buck.
