Again, is you say what state you're in at least we can tell you if it's registered or easily traceable. If you're in NY or CA or some similar no guns area then yes it's probably in a state database, but it's more than likely not recorded anywhere if it's 10+ years old like you stated.

Most states don't even have a registry though, and there's no federal registry. If you take it down to a range to function test it, nobody's going to check the serial because it's none of their business. If you live somewhere like California, New York, or Illinois, you might have cause for concern. Just tell us what state you're in and we can help you find the gun laws where you're at.

If nothing else, take it to a smaller town gun show and sell it for $250 or so in a private sale where no NICS check will take place, and nobody will bother checking any serials.
