Attachment points for optics and a laser for target painting. If it's a 5.56mm carbine length rifle, then a flash hider is necessary. The ability to field strip without special tools is a must. It's ammo must be able to remain effective to 400m at least. Magazine capacity should be north of 20. And it has to have a stock, of course.

Light and optic. Poorfags will get mad at the latter, but we're in the new age of optics that are tougher than irons and easier to use. A sling is great too.

Magazine fed and a sling at absolute minimum. This will limit you to hit and run, sniper or ambush tactics in pretty much only daytime operations.

Ability to accept an optic, flashlight with IR filter, backup sights, and a semiauto or automatic action in an intermediate caliber are greatly preferred. Ability to attach night vision or a laser compatible with NVGs is also a tremendous capability. This will let you be capable of holding your own in a head to head fight with any enemy not equipped with crew served weapons, explosives, armor or aircraft, daytime or night time.
