this right here. The rimmed cartridge actually allows more powder inside the case and greater resilience from a stuck case. It also happens to be easier to manufacture and with steel-cases, tends to fair better if there were any rust on it as, say a non-rimmed one.

If you are to remove the rim, then you'd be creating a somewhat different caliber.
They made it that way, so it has a spec which every gun for that caliber must comply to, so that a gun made today can still chamber and fire 100 years old ammo, and way around.
