Just in time for the California Secession

The United States was embroiled in WWIII, with theaters in Europe (now mostly quiet), the Middle East (largely an air war), and Asia (naval in the South China Sea and combined armed in Korea). At the same time, a civil war raged, with the secession of California and parts of Oregon. Other areas, mostly urban Democrat strongholds, proclaimed themselves indepedent cities in voluntary association with the United States. As the US miliary suffered large losses and was deployed overseas, National Guard and new state militia forces were left to fight in the United States.

Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah voted to turn off the water to California. Elements from the Western States Coalition (WSC; including Idaho, Montana, Texas, and Wyoming) seized strategic points around the Colorado River, taking all major crossings, dams, and canals. Needles and Blythe were captured and garrisoned, each city and the immediate surrounding unincorporated area voting to become part of Arizona for the duration of the crisis, pending an ultimate change of government. A state of "Mojave" was discussed.

An attempt to repulse the invasion was quickly stopped when elements of the defected California Air National Guard launched strikes from Nellis Air Force base, wiping out most of the armor and mechanized infantry of the Californios. A few sorties from left-behind Navy and Marine Corps fighters attempted to strike the WSC forces, but were shot down by the BARCAP over the Colorado. Strikes by the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Roosevelt wiped out all remaining military aircraft, including Army National Guard helicopters.

The navy instituted a blockade of the California coast, sinking ships that attempted to run it, much to the ire of the Chinese, who sided with the Californios. Mines were laid, ports were bombed and struck by cruise missiles. For humanitarian reasons, mainly being the (mostly white) sizeable minority of loyalists in the state, critical infrastructure (the Aquaduct and electrical facilities) were not targeted. Most forms of internet, phone, and cellular communication were hacked, jammed, or otherwise disrupted. Vandenburg AFB, heavily damaged in a Chinese cruise missile attack, was garrison by a besieged element of Air Force and Army troops.

Continued air strikes winnowed the captured military bases and National Guard armories. Mexican illregular forces occupied the immediate border areas as volunteer assistance to the Californios. In reality, the forces were ex-Mexican military, Mexican ex-US military, cartels, and Mexican troops secretly detached by sympathetic commanders. Officially, the Mexican policy was to not interfere in the American Civil War, but to ensure the safety of Mexican citizens, Mexico's borders, and assist refugees.

WSC forces launched an airborne assault on Barstow, with the assistance of elements of the XVIII Airborne Corps and 19th Special Forces. An attack using left-behind OPFOR armor from Fort Irwin was repulsed by A-10 Warthogs from Idaho. North Corps WSC moved down I-15 from their staging area in Primm, Nevada. Small skirmishes occured in the Mt. Pass region, near Zzyzx Rd., and the Cave Mountains along I-15.

Cent Corps advanced from Needles, taking Twentynine Palms and the surrounding area. South Corps took Thermal and staged. Both forces took counter attacks from Californio forces securing the San Gorgonio Pass. Most obvious troop movements were destroyed by air attacks and elements of the supporting Air Cav units.

The attack was threefold with the objective of severing the strategic transportation corridors, airports, ports, and crushing any strongholds of rebel troops in Southern California. North Corps to take the I-5 Corridor via Hwy 14 and the Antelope Valley, eventually pushing up to Gorman, Ventura, and securing the exits to the LA area. Cent Corps was to seize the Victor Valley, push through the Cajon Pass, and secure the exit around the I-15/215 split. Heavy casualties were expected due to the importance of the pass, the geography, and the rebel troop concentration. South Corps' mission was to take the San Gorgonio Pass, head northwest, and link up with North Corps, taking the former Norton AFB and March AFB.

The main fighting lasted less than a week before the objectives were achived. Regular rebel military forces were outnumbered, unsupported by armor, or air support. Logistics and resupply were major problems. Things began to get difficult as the urban areas were entered. The challenge of urban combat was a factor, as well as travel on freeways, and dealing with or sparing the civilian population. This is why an offensive halt was ordered while SoCalCom forces consolidated their gains, built their urban FOBs, and transitioned from desert combat to urban combat.

As a Californian, I would give the state a whole month of succession before it was brought back in.
The northern third -the State of Jefferson- would immediately ally with the USA, and act as a strong foothold for any supporting forces.
The marines in Southern California, along with the NG and the air bases would quickly take over the greater LA area, maybe two weeks for total pacification.
It would then be a simple movement north from the Californian Marines and support, to meet the Northern US/Jefferson troops.
Moving along the PCH, 99 and the 5, it would not take much longer than a week because most of the Liberals wanting to secede are not located in the rural areas of CA.
