Anyone interested in some improvised war machines?
>>32006120
I gotta wonder how worthwhile those are. I mean, it'd take a lot of time and effort, and they don't look that good, but they keep building them, so maybe they're more practical than they look.
>>32006152
I wonder how bulletproof they are? I cant imagine the can get hold of the right steel
>>32006158
They can probably take small arms fire.
I wouldn't want to chance an rpg in one though.
>>32006165
>small arms fire
Thats what Im thinking about, the steel doesnt look particularily thick, and its probably just construction steel.
wouldnt rifles shoot through that stuff
>>32006173
It must depend on the vehicle.
Some use concrete and shit for more protection.
Some have really nice angled surfaces.
Some are just metal boxes.
>>32006179
On that note, some of them are just bombs anyway, so they might not be built to last.
>>32006179
If RPGs would just bounce off of the angled armor where do you aim?
>>32006173
Your choices are "won't stop bullets and shrapnel" or "might stop bullets and shrapnel." Take your pick.
>>32006250
Wherever looks flattest I guess, or the wheels/ground.
Now I'm trying to think of different ways to make armour. I just though of this like two seconds ago, but imagine making box steel segments, weld a panel at the bottom to turn it into a cup sort of thing, then fill it up with sand, and weld a metal lid that goes over the edge a bit, so you can slot it into a panel on the vehicle.
Better yet maybe, just using tube or pipe steel, because of the no flat surfaces thing.
If a round penetrates the armour segment, you can quickly replace them, then the militia armourer or whoever can just fill it up again through the bullet hole, and weld an offcut of metal over the top.
I figure that way, you can save on some metal, which is probably much more valuable a commodity in a civil war, and sand's got that whole non-Newtonian shit going for it, dunno if the mix of the two materials is beneficial or not, different attributes and all.
Going with the value thing, I'm guessing pipes would win again, I imagine they're more readily available.
>>32006388
If you had a civil war in the developed world, I imagine granite benchtops would be pretty nifty for armour too, although the weight of them would limit their uses.
>>32006396
granite countertops are retarded, i sold them in hs. heavy to the point they can damage floors, pourous so they require constant cleaning and sealing ( which no1 does) and just expensive af

>>32006388
Water can als be quite effective in stopping bullets. Could be even more effective since there is no dead space in between the sand particles, hence higher density. I also read somewhere that non-homogenous armour is harder to penetrate by an EFP/shaped charge.
Pipe sections have the disadvantage that they create a thinly armoured channel along the welds if they are stacked on top of each other. Rectangular profiles would give you a more uniform thickness everywhere.

They had and did use camels, actually.
>These "tactics" are merely that of necessity.
You can make that argument of almost any military action, African or otherwise. How did they deploy their French-supplied MILAN launchers per vehicle? How did they organize individual fighting units? Under who? How did they coordinate and lead these forces across great distances and with particularly compelling results at Fada and Maaten al-Sarra? What was the extent of the US intelligence support to the Chadian factions fighting Gaddhafi? And how did the rest of the developing world see and further develop these tactics?
This is Africa, not Atlanta. Shit gets marvelously weird.

Fun Fact: Apparently latest models of toyota were becoming too complicated for the region. Current insurgent fashion is Chinese Zhongxing Grand Tiger , mostly because its copy of early 90's era toyotas, purely analog without all the electronic garbage.

Yeah, but the altitude the planes generally fly at is probably far too high for small arms. Dunno how high they fly when actually dropping the bombs though, but still.

https://youtu.be/MH2xsQcIUYI
>>32006396
Actually this has be done in WW II by the us. They made a rubber-granitegrains composute material. Iirc it was over 2 times better at protection/weight than concrete
>>32016722
Yeah but that's WWII, I'm talking about today. It was common to do low-altitude bombing back then.
>>32016739
Against small arms fire and even 20mm it still has neat protection. Also uts pretty cheap and easy to produce in urban areas, so in urban warfare and civil war this could be an very interdasting opshin.
>>32016741
I only thin at planetside 2.
This is an flash in my eyes and an reallife harasser would be neat.
Just imagine an reallife harasser with an 20mm autocannon
>>32016785
What in the fuck are you trying to say?
>>32016739
Today? If you're talking a civil war in a fully industrialized nation, you can forget about ANY homebrew armor being effective. And solid granite would actually be a fairly useless armor. It might stop a bullet or two, but the problem with it is that it's just too brittle. It would very quickly crack and break.
>>32016808
Thats why you put granite grains inside of an rubber matrix. This way you improve standingtime of your armor by a lot
>>32016806
Just google planetside 2 flash or harasser.

It was bulky and less weight effective than steel, so not really suitable for land warfare. The Bongs invented it and called it plastic armour. Initially they used granite, but later discovered any rock would do.

Been saying for a while use ultra fine sand (sand blasting) mixed into high test/heat silicone (engine gasket) laminating balistic cloth layers (kevlar/carbon fiber from boat building supply).
Wrap that around some ceramic plates (floor tile) with epoxy and truck bed liner coat the whole thing (truck bed the ceramic before epoxy/cloth wrap too a step most miss). Look what it does to brick.

I was thinking technicals are really too under armored to get right in the action and too small for artillery but would be perfect for 155mm mortar.
They could be quite an effective force if you had a 100 or so driving around, could get to areas quick and lay down some hefty fire.
Or maybe a stabilised machine gun with optics, so it can hang far back.
