Let's say the US military decides to switch from the M16 to a whole new weapon platform by 2017. What do you choose?

must meet following criteria:
>developed and manufactured by a US-based company
>not too expensive
>uses standard ammunition
>is easy to train on
>simple and reliable mechanics
>can't just be a different AR (like a piston AR or something)

In all honestly, LSAT Rifle.

LSAT LMG is all but confirmed at this stage, the logical conclusion is an LSAT rifle that shares parts and ammo.

It could even be bullpup with a very rear-set magazine, since the LSAT action uses a pivoting chamber with no rearward recoil.
>>
>>32004619
>where's your RFB?
In reviews anyone can read online.

The ejection is novel, but the failures of said actual mechanism in the chamber (catastrophic failure like it was made in china out of pot metal), and the difficulties in keeping the actual ejection tube moving were numerous and alarming.

The RDB didn't have any of these issues, and isn't as complicated, and is so dead simple you wonder why it wasn't made 100 years earlier.
>>
biggest problem with kel-tec would be they would only be able to produce like 1 gun per squad,
it would be like in WWII russia where one guy is given a gun and the rest just get ammo and
pick up the gun after the first guy dies
>>
The fuck is up with keltecs manufacturing volume anyway
>>
>>32004497
honestly the rdb is the only good choice

Same ammo and magazines which is the biggest deal

I'm sure a contract would significantly decrease the price of each unit

Although I can totally see them flipping out about a non adjustable LOP
>>
>>32004640
Holy shit, source please. I love the LSAT program but have not seen any news about it in a long time.

They have a bunch of employees that are about half a step above the average McDonald's employee in both the give a shit and ability departments since most of them aren't machinists to begin with. They also make changes as they find problems which eats up output BUT they are increasing the size of the facility and working on getting better employees
>>
So we do like everyone else and dust of the AR-18 and upgrade the fuck out of it until it's pretty much just the action and may well or we hotrod the mini-14 into a milspec M5A2 Folsom or Mk.6
>>
>>32004511

The cartridge is the big roadblock.

Maybe an LMT manufactured rifle (not ar-15) built from the ground up around 6.5x45 SAW or 6.5x43 German (6.5 Creedmoor is just a little too long and 6.5 grendel is just a little too fat). I'm thinking 3 lug triangular bolt. HK 416 piston design.

I dunno, something that looks like this maybe, as long as it functions right.
>>
>>32006249
btw, 6.5 cartridge because sometimes you have to fight at longer ranges and also sometimes you have to win a firefight before a force multiplier can do its job and also sometimes you need your enemy's cover to merely be concealment.
>>
>>32006254
Plus that 95-120gr range leaves a decent amount of room for experimentation. Goddamn I wish 7.62x45 had become standard instead but that's used by nobody. Fucking magwell restrictions man.
>>
>>32004604
What, by hanging? I have a Keltec and I doubt is would even make an adequate suicide gun.
>>
>>32005213

Sounds great but that 20rd mag seems like a big downside.
>>
The AR style platform is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Sure, there are rifles which are probably better (SCAR-L, HK 416, etc), but it's really unlikely that the US would ever adopt a rifle not made in the states.

Desire for a different cartridge may drive for something new, but expect all the other NATO countries to start screaming bloody murder about standardization.

FN got the contract because they blew Colt's bid clean out of the water. FN also does have US based manufacturing plants, mostly to get around annoying import laws.

>>
>>32006997

The M249 is the FN Minimi and the M240 is the FN MAG, so yeah.

>>32007011

All US military contracts fulfilled by FN are produced by FN-America who's plants are in the US.

Also FN is basically half American since they are an amalgamation of both old FN Herstal and Browning.

>>
>>32004497
For infantry, some ar10 variant, probably armalite since their shit is pretty good.
For non infantry, 10/22 take downs, and/or a mossberg 500 standard.

Handgun would be glock 19 gen 4, or cz75 compacts depending on safety requirements.

This would save the military billions.

In a dream scenario i would have every m16 and m4 rechambered for .243win, but that wont happen.

Modernize it, chamber it in 5.56 or some special snowflake intermediate. Give one or two extended mags to each soldier so that any member of the squad can temporarily act as an automatic rifleman, meaning that the IAR concept would actually work.

As it's basically a Lewis Gun it's probably American enough
>>
>>32007271
Why should infantry use the heavier and more expensive 308?
>>
>>32007371
But we did use a modernized and upgraded version of that, it was called the M60
>>
>>32004656
I have both. The RFB isn't that complicated, especially when compared to the RDB. Only the dual extractor setup is really """complicated""", otherwise it's essentially a FAL tipping bolt system.

Hell yeah, I loved that thing. Resistance was one of the last vidyagames I played before I stopped and it was a nice one to end on, something about it just really made me like it. I think it did a good job of getting the bleakness of the setting and situation across.

That rifle was my favorite, I always used in even in the face of better weapons; not that it wasn't actually very good itself.
>>
>>32004511

>>
>>32006672
it seems to be coming out for REALSIES next year in March ish. Go on their youtube and they have a working unit, apparently theyve been trying to purge as many faults from it as possible recently
>>
FN has been making guns in the US since 1981.
>>
>>32006634
We will see shifts to heavier calibers or novel weapon systems when our rifles fail to pierce their armor. when everyone has cheaper, lighter Level IV carries we may see a change

but until we reach an era where everyone dresses like Level III or Level IV stormtroopers, we will see the AR stay.
>>
>>32004943
What about making AUG clone that can be quickly converted to magazine-fed LMG via barrel swap?
>>
>>32006808
>At this point the change in small arms can only be justified by a change in ammunition.
Pretty much this.

Even then it's likely that new cartridge won't change the rifles mechanically, unless it'll be caseless which is still science fiction though.
>>
>>32004497
realistically we're probably just gonna upgrade the m16 eventually. right? I dunno in what way exactly, but doesn't that seem most logical.
>>
>>32007553
I guess the reason for it would be body armour and higher combat ranges, with the advantage over things like 6.8SPC being - .308 is widely used.

No matter what cartridge is chosen to replace 5.56, it should still be able to utilize STANAG mags even if the replacement for M16/M4 doesn't.

My vote is for something like .277 wolverine. This allows for easy retrofit of existing rifles (literally just a barrel swap, same mags can be used). .277 wolverine is also incapable of chambering in 5.56 chambered guns so this would make it more appealing to brass worried about stupid grunts using ammo that could make the gun blow up.

It's a big round, it's just as wide as current 7.62 but is shorter and lighter. Since the cased telescoping cartridge is a cylinder, you get a straight magazine from stacking them.

The 6.5 they are testing has considerably more KE than 7.62 NATO. 3.4 Kj muzzle energy and keeps it a lot better than 7.62 NATO.
