So I'm in the market for my first gun, now that I'm no longer underage and out of high school I'm looking for a reliable yet cheap(ish) gun. I've heard good things about the Maverick 88, which i could pick up between 180-230 at some LGS in my area. Pros and cons? Convince me to, or to not pick one up.

Maverick 88 is a great gun, go for it OP

great choice OP

It's the one I have and still shoot the most. Everyone I shoot with has been telling me to get a semi auto but I love the pump action. So satisfying. I'd say buy it, its a great gun for an even better price
>>
Go with a Mossberg 500 instead.

Holy shit, who is this fluid druid?
>>
>>31991279
I bought my 500 for $200 at a pawn shop.
>>
>>31991279

Try to find a used 500, they can go as low as $175, depending on your LGS that is.
>>
I got a new mossberg 500 for 280 at rural king

youll have to zoom in a bit, but on the left it list all of the popular poorfag shotguns.

I recently got a pardner pump and 50 shells for 160 thanks to some great rebates and sales and I love it
>>
>>31992718
not the OP but do you have any more of these?
>>
Bought one today at a LGS. Was $230. The other shotguns they had were over $400 including some 500s and some semi-auto that I didn't find out the name of.
>>
>>31991279

Get a handgun. Shotguns are almost completely worthless outside of farm duty or shooting trap(s).
>>
/k/ i need help. Recently bought a used mossberg 590 and it is a great gun. Only problem is the pump jiggles. It doesn't affect drawing the pump at all but it is really annoying. What is the best way to go about fixing this?
>>
>>31993092

You can't and it's probably gonna break

> t.my brand new broken mossy 500

Since this is a shotgun thread; I need some help getting started looking for home defense. Biggest concern is killing family members due to over penetration. But I want to be confident that if I aim in the general direction of an intruder I'll hit him and neutralize the threat in one shot
>>
>>31993143
So just get a new pump?
>>
>>31993092

That's what all Mossbergs do.

Gonna have to steer you away from a shotgun if you're worried about overpen. Try an ar15 with 50-55gr ammo. Very little overpen and can neutralize in 1 shot easily

Maverick 88 is totally fine. Best bang-for-your buck budget shotgun (maybe tied with the 982 Hawk) around.

If I were you I'd go to pawn shops and ask for cheap beater shotguns though.

I've got a few old store brand Mossbergs (meaning it's a Mossberg 500 with a different stamp on it) and a Mossberg brand Mossman all for sub $200. The cheapest was for $95. All are 100% functional, all needed TLC (surface rust mostly but I detail strip them either way) but all run smoother than the 500 I bought NiB and my buddy's 88. My theory is simply that they were built with a little more attention to finish back in the day.

Either way, biggest difference between a Maverick 88 and 5xx is the safety. It's a crossbar on the 88 and a tang safety on 5xxs. I prefer the tang but it's completely personal preference.

Also the forend on 88s is pinned so changing furniture is a pain in the ass and impossible without replacing parts.

ignore this retard >>31993143
the jiggle is actually a design feature, looser clearance so it's harder to get fucked by sand and dirt and stuff
