It was the chillest part of WWII there ever was, Von Luck and his opponent agreed that they would fight a civilized war, no fighting after 5:00 pm because then it was time for tea.
Regular contact between both commanders to exchange info about prisoners, no risk for night raids so you would get a full nights sleep.
Von Luck was so liked by the allies that when they had a chance to stage an air attack on his command post they did mock strafing runs until he had the chance to evacuate to a safe distance before they blew up his tent with rockets.

I totally believe all the problems we have today in the 3rd world and middle east could have been solved if one industrialized country dominated the world and gone in to all these countries and kicked them into shape and set up unified laws and living standards. Germany is not the country that could have done that. Germans are soulless genocidal wack jobs who if they had won WW2 would have genocided much of europe and enslaved the rest and let the rest of the 3rd world slide into much worse than they are now.

So, I would have fought on the allies, european theater. The Japs put up a pretty poor fight and totally wasted their naval power on stupid south pacific islands that had no strategic value. Russia and Germany were pretty evenly matched by 1943 and if Hitler didnt waste time and men at Stalingrad then it would have been quite a fight.

The rings are typically called cooling fins, I believe. But yes, you should be damn proud to have that SMG as part of your heritage. Very cool design. The whole 'mag on top' looks kinda funky to me, but with gravity-assisted feed as well as the ejection port being directly underneath, the chances of a failure to eject seem pretty fucking minimal. What's there to get in the way? A more likely scenario is a failure to eject due to the bolt getting grimy, but it seems like a pretty well-sealed system.

As a Canadian, the best designs in my ancestry are pretty much the Ross which had a tendency to be jammy in poor conditions but was otherwise a very solid and accurate design, and the M1 Rifle (Nicknamed after its Canadian-born designer of Canadian parentage, John Cantius Garand as the M1 Garand). James Paris Lee also lived in Canada for a time, but I think it'd be wrong to consider the Lee Enfield design to be at all Canadian just because of that. That's Yanklogic, and I don't use Yanklogic. Nah, the Lee Enfield is if anything, Scottish, because that's where James Lee was born, but Scotland is a part of Britain so I find it better to just consider it a British design.

We produced STENs, BRENs, No.4 Lee Enfields, and Hi Powers during WWII though, so that's pretty sweet. The Chinese even bought a lot of Hi Powers from Canada, complete with stock holsters similar to the C96, and I think with a rear sight that graduated out to 300m or something crazy like that. Nowadays, Canada produces C7 and C8 assault rifles, which are used by the Norwegians and the British SAS Special Forces. Pretty fuckin' awesome. They're made with hammer-forged barrels and are semi/full auto instead of semi/burst like the M16A2, M16A4, and M4. I hear the hammer-forged barrels make for better accuracy than the American counterparts, and also, who DOESN'T prefer semi/full over semi/burst? Burst mode came about after Vietnam due to panicked grunts just mag-dumping and wasting ammo

Early on, when they first mounted a quad. 50 in the nose (basically a pilot said lol, I'm'a try this!), they discovered that having 4 .50 barrels exposed to salt spray on the very front of the boat wasn't good for the guns' health. They tried a few different barrel plugs, tape, covers, etc, to protect the bore, before someone realized the perfect thing was a condom. They only had a handful, since they were at a males only forward airbase, so basically they had what was in people's seabags. So, given the success of the forward facing guns, they sent a PBY to Australia to pick up every spare quad .50 mount they could get, plus ammo, beer, and all the condoms they could find. On takeoff, though, the plane hit a wave wrong, which burst some hull plates, and the plane lost it's cargo into the water. So, as the plane comes around and beaches itself in the surf, this Navy pilot from an isolated base has to explain all the beer and condoms washing up around him.

Apperently if you black out pulling to many Gs while dive bombing, there is a auto pilot system that takes over and pulls out the dive for you. You just set the altitude before you begin dive bombing.

The gear legs are fixed.
If you loose one gear or one gets damaged in battle, it's very dangerous to land the plane. You could easily ball the plane up trying to land on one gear.
To solve this, they put explosive charges in each gear, so you could blow them off to do a safe belly landing.

Since it was French troops, I was assuming the pic was from sometime in 1944-45 after France was liberated. If it's 1940, then the No.4 Lee Enfield hasn't been adopted yet. It was designed 1939, but adopted 1941 as I recall.
