I work in a bike shop, and we used to do this all the time. 2 tips for extra fun: Use a presta valve instead of a schrader valve, that way you can drill a smaller hole in the cap. Fill about 1/3 of the bottle with water, that way the weight lets you just throw the bottle and the impact will cause it to explode.

We would fill them to about 100psi. Make sure you use a bottle with a fair amount of threads in the cap. We tried a gatorade bottle once, and it blew up at a very low pressure since there's only like 1 thread engaging.

Always be careful though. One guy was making one and the cap broke while he was filling it with air. The head of the pump swung up and hit him in the forehead and he had to go get stitches. He was doing it like 10 feet from the bathroom where our boss was taking a shit. The boss pinched it off and ran out to see what was going on.

How do you get the Presta Valve to seal up air tight since it typically pushes through the rim and then it's screwed down with a nut.

Cut the valve out from an old tube like the pic (or with a little less rubber). Put it through the hole in the cap (6mm or 1/4in hole). Then put the nut on. You can crank the nut down with some pliers to help it seal really well.
