Let's talk about weapons and gear that was common in American civllian and police life from the 70s-90s. It's a very underepresented period if you ask me. Anything before cops started sporting those faggoty flat tops and oakleys.

This video seems like bullshit to me. What kind of wheel gat is he holding in pic related. he claims it's a .38, but it seems rather large for a.38

Shotguns fail at fucking everything. They fucked up the other commifornia shootout too, the first responder had a shotgun with 00buck and hit a suspect in the back, it didn't penetrate the soft armor and the suspect started firing.

Shotguns are a fucking cancer for defensive purposes.

my dad was a cop in the 80s, 90s, 00s and retired like 2 years ago. when his department switched over from those shitty m&p revolvers in the 80s, his first automatic was a fuck hueg, polished stainless s&w .45, i cant remember which model number.

pretty sure he carried that until he made detective in the early 90s and then started carrying a 3913 until he went back to the street in the early 00s. he then carried a glock 23 but hated it. he said it was the only pistol back then that had a rail to attach a light. im not sure if hes right or not. when the m&p40 came out he switched to that and carried it until he retired a few years ago.

he also said nobody carried a beretta 92 like on tv and movies, everyone carried s&w or glocks. he was also an early adopter of the asp baton and taught classes on how to use it to other cops in the department. he did have a shotgun in his cruiser, an 870 with a side saddle that looked like the shotgun from duke nukem 3d, but it did have a stock on it.

equipment wise he always wore hi tech magnums, previous to that he had to wear those shitty patent leather dress shoes. the departments down here did not require them to wear those goofy cop hats, and instead had an optional baseball cap. his duty belt was the same basket weave leather pattern both times he was on the street. in the past decade or so when the holsters came out that required you to cant it a certain way to unholster he switched over to one of those.

in the 80s he drove a box caprice, which i liked. as a detective he had an unmarked box caprice and a ford taurus. when he went back to the street he had a newer crown vic. unfortunately he was not a street cop when bubble chevys were a thing. anyways, im sure theres more but if you guys have any questions lemme know.

Your dad sounds super cool. I think the 80s and 90s were the best time to be a cop -- technology was rapidly advancing, but tactics and mindset (and lack of SJW whining) were still old-school, so you were free to innovate. At the same time, there were some nasty places to be a cop in those times (Miami, Detroit...)
>>
>>31987837
Cool story bro. Seriously that was dope.

If he was LAPD it was probably a 4506 stainless. At least that's what the LAPD website said they were carrying in the 80s.

According to this dude they did carry berettas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rc_0hBKQD8&t=105s

Also in my home town all the cops had Berettas. Nowdays everywhere I go I see nothing but glocks on cops.
>>
also around the time he retired he pulled some guns out of his safe and we were finger fucking them in the kitchen. he carried a 9mm kahr compact as his back up gun on his ankle. he noted he switched to another gun, and didnt say which, one time when he was getting out of the car and somehow the magazine base caught something in the car and popped off and the rounds and spring came flying out and spilled all over the car.

he bought two 3913s and gave one to my mom, and she couldnt load the magazine so she just kept her revolver. he kept that 3913 in his safe until around when he retired and mentioned he had it, so i bought it from him and it came with 5 mags. its probably my favorite gun to shoot now.

when i was in high school i fabricated a mount for the siren control module in his cruiser. for whatever retarded reason it was on the transmission hump under the dash and wasnt reachable without leaning forward and down, so i fashioned a mount out of wood that raised it up and oriented it towards the driver seat.

also back then it seemed they were allowed to use more unconvential non-lethal tactics such as batons, warning shots and punching people in the face wheras now it seems the minute they "fear for their life" they just magdump. While this might be the safest option, it kind of eliminates the element of communicating to the perp about the escalating use of force, which is why cops shot much more people on average these days despite crime going down.

>On October 5, 1985, Platt and Matix murdered 25-year-old Emelio Briel while he was target shooting at a rock pit. The pair stole Briel's car and used it to commit several robberies. Briel's remains were found on March 1, 1986 but were not positively identified until May 1986.

Wow....what fucking tossers. This guy was just probably trying to blow off stress after work and they just rolled up and popped him for his car.

Again though, the main question I have here is WHY THE FUCK WERE THEY STILL USING REVOLERS IN 1986?

By that time they were probably outgunned by most civillians and gangs.

im not sure exactly when they started but he said in the 80s and 90s it was frowned upon for looking too militarized, so some cops had mini 14s. he never actually owned an AR until a year or so before he retired, and didnt carry it at work because he said it was too much bs to jump through hoops with the department. strangely enough i built an AR because of threads on /k/ and when he shot mine, it motivated him to build one of his own and now he has several, as do i.

>>31987930
well he was a cop in broward county, im not going to say where but he was around for the cocaine cowboys days. some of that action did spill over from miami to broward but it wasnt much. he actually did catch don johnson pissing behind a building when miami vice was being filmed here and let him ago because he was don johnson. in regards to the sjw shit, there was none of that. now if you slightly raise your voice theres an inquisition but back then you could thump on anyone for pretty much anything and there was zero recourse for the person to take against the cop or department.

>>31987937
>4506

>>
>>31988091
yeah but it seems it's specifically American police had a revolver fetish that lasted way too fucking long. By the 70s the Italian police had those sweet 15 round Berettas that are on the surplus market now, Western European police were using the Hi power and pretty much the entire Eastern Bloc had some Makarov variant. It was specifically American police that insisted on using outdated shit because "made in 'murrica" but even that is not an excuse since S&W 39s were pretty common.
>>
>>31987176
For the 70's and 80's just play Mafia 3 and there you go.

90's is just pain and suffering.
>>
>>31987993
>back then it seemed they were allowed to use more unconvential non-lethal tactics such as batons, warning shots and punching people in the face

pretty common from what i was told actually. so were verbal threats. a few years back there used to be a commercial for cops reruns on fx where it shows a bso deputy chasing after a dude in a neighborhood and yells at him "stop running or ill shoot you in the back!". if you did that now, especially on camera...yea kiss your life goodbye.

>>31988063
>how could she not load the magazine? weren't those guns designed for women?

they did make a lady smith version, but she said it chewed her fingers up loading the mag. im more apt to believe it was her just not wanting to try anything new and purposely being shit at it so she didnt have to change her ways.

>>31988091
>The efficiency of the bureaucracy?

no, back in the day at least here, the whole mayberry sheriff old timey cop thing was what all the older chiefs that were on the beat in the andy griffith show era wanted their cops to do, so they restricted them.
>>
>>31987176
Sucked being a gun owner in the 80's and 90's.

You bought guns that the manufacturer offered or risked the locap gunsmith making you one of a kind customjobs.

AR-15 parts accessories from 3rd parties didn't really take off till the assault weapon ban lifted and civilian market demand drove innovation.

Look at tge mentality of mist gun makers from back in the day they were arrogant assholes.

The 80's to 90's were great if you were special forces, being a civilian sucked.

We need to drop this nostalgia rose tinted glasses nonsense.

The best time to be a civilian gun owner was right before the NFA laws were made. Because during the twilight years of thw wild west, you could own machine guns artillery and explosives.

Now in the 2000's after the assault weapon ban ended, with the exception of in never ending in CA and NY, now is the best time in America in the past 80 years to own guns because there is so much to compete for your money* and you can almost buy anything in free american states like georgia, texas and other southern midwestern and western states barring the coastline.

*really there is lots of options for American staples like AR-15's and 1911's it would be great if import laws and part compliance was did away with to have cheaper and more variety of non neutered european gun designs or cheaper alternatives from Asia and Russia.
>>
>>31988138
Americans dwspite their love of guns have always been behind the tech curve when it came to military and police.

US civil war is prime example, most troops were using what was basically a musket when metal cartidge breach loaders, bolt actions and lever action rifles existed.

On a related note, I think it was only 1996 that the RCMP switched from the Model 10. And even then it was an extremely contentious matter inside the organization that many were against.
And the replacement chosen was the 5946 with the absolutely disgusting DAO trigger. The Glock was rejected solely because the trigger has to be pulled for disassembly.
Still standard issue today, they constantly are on the lookout for anybody retiring those same type to buy them up for parts since S&W discontinued it.
They're about as backwards and bureaucratic as it gets really, all municipal departments and the couple provincial ones are always well ahead of them. They still haven't gotten to the point of having C8 carbines (basically a Canadian M4) widely available.

I was a cop in the mid-90s. Metro area of a couple million but the city PD I worked for within that area had a population of about 150,000. We usually had about half the meth labs in the state in our city, keeping us pretty busy in SWAT, and the lowest per-capita number of police officers in the state, so patrol was busy as fuck.

Carried a Glock 17 (2 spare mags), Taser (1st gen), ASP, two pairs of cuffs. My "just in case" gear was a Glock 26 backup gun with another spare Glock mag and a NAA 22 revolver in a wallet holster (before ATF decided that was an AOW). Also a Katz Avenger serrated (I think it had another name back then) and any one of several Benchmade autos du jour, a bunch of flex cuffs in a cargo pocket and about a dozen cuff keys hidden all over me. Also piles of loaded Glock mags in my briefcase.

Agency sprung for level II body armor, but we had a generous (for then) uniform allowance of $250/mo so those of us who were serious (i.e. planned to keep the job long term and stay alive) bought our own level III vests and just kept the level II as a spare if we needed a loaner. My citation clipboard had a level II insert in it, my bigger paperwork clipboard and briefcase both had level III inserts in them, plus my level IV SWAT vest.

Almost everyone in the agency had a shotgun in the car, at a minimum. The serious guys also had AR-15s on duty and in some cases a few of us also had our own NFA M16s we carried in the car, back when you could still get an M16 on a form 4 for about $2000. Carried a boatload of loaded M16 mags in the car too. Also kept my tricked-out-as-shit Remington 700 PSS 308 in the trunk for SWAT. Mine was from back in the 80s when they were still hand built in their custom shop, and worked properly.

I always wondered why cops in Europe were all about little pocket guns in .32 and .380 for duty use, doesn't seem to make any sense.
Like how in some Asian countries (such as Japan), many officers carry 5-shot .38 snubs as duty guns. I can't imagine why, I mean I know they'll pretty much never use them but it surely wouldn't be much more expensive or anthing to get modern pistols.

mainly revovlers, though I remeber in the mid to late 70s my dad told me they got a lot of stuff when 'na, when ending and they were having the same arguments about mub militerized police force becuase the war on drugs and crime was starting to heat up
He said, if its anything like what happened when he was on the job, most of it is just for show and to justify their budgets every year, maybe once in a blue moon they use some of it for a riot or big operation and be like "SEE, SEE THATS WHY WE HAVE IT" (and arguably it would come in handy), but most of the time it just collects dust and is too much of a pain to really use. n a few years they'll sell most of it off and keep some of it

he started with a revolver, then in the late 80s switched to a 9mm smith and wesson wonder nine that he loved and still has, and before he retied in 2007 used a glock .40 that he also liked, but prefers the smith

changing something for a department is hard, especially the bigger a department is, and especially something as vital as a duty gun, uniform, body armor, cruiser, ect
its not as simple as "we want to change from A to B so we'll do it next Tuesday", theres money, meetings, bureaucracy, testing to see if its even necessary and a handful of dumb asses that dont want to change and that includes some people working in the feild
I work for a fairly smaller Sheriffs department and we argued all summer about switching back to 9mm from .40 and allowing M&P's on the list

That's nothing. Before my country's police switched to the SIG P220 line of pistols they carried Walther PPs in .32 ACP. Now this isn't that odd in and of itself but they didn't even load the magazines with more than five rounds. Each cop had nothing more than five rounds of .32 ACP and a baton at his immediate disposal.

would this be an okay place to discuss law enforcement as a career?

i took the border patrol agent polygraph and failed. the guy said I was hiding something, and suggested that I was hiding drug use. I never touched drugs in my life.

as a forensic psych major, i know these machines don't measure truth or lies, just bodily reactions. i was nervous as hell that day.

i want a LE job, but most agencies require a poly. people from the 70s-90s didn't have to deal with this shit.

Ex-FBI contractor reporting in. I've seen their internal memos (discussing nothing sensitive; this is merely for historical info) that referenced the many different type of 1980s semi-autos used by agents. The foolishness and logistical headaches of FBI armorers having to carry so many spare parts for so many models of S&W is what lead FBI to adopt Glock model 22 as standard for all special agents. FBI specialized operators could still keep their Springield Armory .45 1911s if they qual'd with them, but the agency standardized on the .40s&w. Over the last 30 yrs, FBI has had problems w/controllability of and stress on guns by that round so they're FINALLY allowing agents to choose among the G22, 17, and 19, the latter two in 9mm.

Initially the RCMP's replacement of the Model 10 was an aluminum framed version of the S&W RCMP only 9mm. I don't think that would've been known as a 5946 also, but I could be wrong.

I only know this, as my Mother was working there during the transition from Model 10 to S&W Semi-auto. She had a hard time passing range tests with the new pistol (was always Ace with the Model 10 snubby running +P wadcutters, which was standard issue for her). To pass with the new pistol, she had to practice so much that she actually wore out the gun (aluminum frame). At that time, the equipment dude custom ordered her the all steel version because of this. I'm guessing this would be the 5946.

Not sure how long the aluminum framed version lasted across the force, but probably not that long.
>>
>>31993995
I think (though I may well be wrong) that when they changed over to the 5946, they also picked up some (probably relatively small) number of 3953s (compact, alloy-framed DAO) specifically for officers with small hands who struggled to use the 5946. Maybe that's what it was?
I've seen images of 3953s with the same RCMP rollmark on the slide as their 5946s have and I believe that's what they are

It could have been. Sadly I was a lot younger then, and didn't think to write down model numbers.

She was undercover, so her only "issue" firearm prior to that was the .38 snubby. Perhaps this is what they issued to these officers.

For those who can't tell... the poster doesn't hate cops. What he is doing is counter intelligence propaganda. He's a government shill.

He's trying to make it look like if you dislike tyrannical goons like cops, you must be a nigger or nigger lover. This is done to discourage potentially armed and dangerous unhinged commandos from fighting cops in a future police state. They know we hate niggers even more.

He's actually the same guy who later on posts something like.

>here in /k/ we hate pol you racist Nazi bigots!!!

In order to keep racism and thus the truth from race and biological differences from being expressed further. Dumb half nigger and beaner kids will be less intelligent and most likely to control.
>>

It would make sense then.
I remember reading on a forum one time somewhere where a couple RCMP officers mentioned that those compact versions are rare to see but some are still kicking around.
Though I don't know how they can afford to keep using them considering the lengths they already have to go to for parts to keep the standard guns going.

Ammo costs. 9mil is cheaper, and the RCMP would go through a LOT of ammo for training.

Like I said, my Mother wore out the aluminum gun trying to qualify, and they gave her the all steel version instead.

More recently ended up at the Range with a guy I knew years ago, who's Vancouver. They use .40. Cheap boxes of Winchester is what they are given to practice with. He had two FTF/FTE with that one 50 round box that he had been issued.

Cost IS a concern.

Many lamented the switch, and I'll tell you why... Revolvers are easy to keep clean... Auto's are not. Many Cops are lazy. I know about the solvent tank, and some just dumping their entire pistols in there, and calling it a day. Many Cops do not WANT to properly clean a Semi.

They were issued with one and werr forced to live with it. Besides most asian countries already switched to semiauto with J-frame revolvers are relegated to either traffic cops or undercover agents
