The PT was a joke. The program is designed to get couch potatoes and weak fatties to pass the PFA. Starts slow and ramps up gradually.

That being said, if you don't regularly run, start ASAP. We had a couple recruits get ASMO'd for stress fractures.

Nothing gayer than what you'd expect. Expect to shower in front of other dudes.

is it possible to go Special forces or close to it without making a career out of the military?
I see in every operator or special forces posts all the guys in there look to be in their mid to late 30s. I wouldnt mind doing it for some time, but Im not looking to go career and I dont want to be bottom of the barrel infantry either

Also, those who are in, whats the current state of the military right now training, education, and purpose wise? Is it a joke and should I not even consider joining or do you enjoy it and feel its worthwhile
>>
>>31981412
A first time enlistment contract is 8 years. If you mean actual special forces, it's 5 active the rest reserve. Keep in mind that SF and SOF are VERY different jobs. SF is making brown people do the work for you, with very little time to be billy badass. If Middle Eastern culture, customs, language and food hold an interest alongside being an incredibly important part of the military, SF is for you.

If you mean SOF, there's different tenures depending on what you want to do, but all contracts are 8 years, usually half active half reserve

If you wanna kick doors, but don't want to go overseas, FBI SWAT, HRT, or local SWAT are always in-demand and are seeing more "combat" than 99.99% of the military nowadays.

The mid to late 30's look is the beard. They are generally expected to not shave to fit in with local customs, and to be harder to pick out as oper8orz
>>

Should I sign up for the reserves for the time being? Would I be able to finish school while in them? I really need something new in my life because dicking around at school and a part time job as gotten old, but I dont wont to put a hold on my education when im half way finished

Not that anon, but check out 11x opt40, or 18x with a recruiter, Rangers, SOF, are more into direct action, while SF is supposed to train locals to assist them in their missions.
And, with that mindset of yours you definitely won't. So try to change it.
>>
>>31981607

This situation comes up on /MEG/ quite a bit, but what you want to do is usually a shitty idea and here's why.

>Becoming a reservist will still take you out of college for at least a semester for a shit-tier job (short training), or 2-3 semesters for a more advanced job.

>If you enlist as a reservist, there's usually no going to active duty after that as enlisted. The recruiter will tell you it is possible, but it basically isn't. You could join the guard/reserves now and do ROTC to commission after (this is called SMP), but you need to get started on that right now if that is your goal.

>Being a reservist sucks. It will NOT sate your desire for an interesting life. You will spend 3-12~ months on active orders for your initial basic/job training, then will go back to drilling once a month and doing literally nothing job-related. You will hate it, most people do. The amount of part-timers that want to go active after their job training is staggering, because they get a taste of the lifestyle and then are immediately told they're basically never going to be "really" in the military again.

Grab your balls and either get out of college and enlist, or look into ROTC and commission. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
>>
So is 13F just a glorified 11B?
>>
>>31982093

This is my exact dilemma. I want to deploy at least once as a 1A8x (Airborn Crypto-Linguist), but I'd most likely be doing it for shit pay for a year and some extra pay as a weekend warrior until I graduate and then have to wait to commission anyway.

There's no luck involved with choosing an Army MOS, anon. Either you qualify and wait for it, or you don't.

A ranger contract is the vastly superior option, if you must go infantry.

Also you sound like a massive edgelord.
>>
>>31981574
Rangers, Recon and the Raiders are all door kickers

Rangers will often roll with SF and Delta to give them support, but a major part of their job is raiding compounds and looking for HVT's

Force Recon do alot of deep recon, but are also specialists in boarding and securing a possibly hostile ship

The Marine Raiders are difficult to explain, because they have no set doctrine. They could do anything from a raid to a patrol, to reconnaissance. Not really recommended unless you're sure you want to be a Marine and nothing else

Were you dropped on your head as a child? 13F sits in the back with arty and relays information to the gun crew. 11b walks around and occasionally gets shot at

Very few jobs are as different than those two
>>
>>31983992
Theoretically yes. Realistically, very VERY few people have the mental fortitude to train hard enough to get to SFAS, let alone pass it
>>
>>31984664
As most people will tell you, never go marines

However, you sound like you have the mental insufficiencies and anger issues along with the raw physical strength that being a marine grunt requires, and I think you'd fit right in
>>
>>31985063

>Very few jobs are as different than those two

Considering that most jobs never even leave the wire, no, not really. 13F is the only 13-series that regularly has to be out front to do their jobs, and as a result tended to get wrapped up into the "basically infantry" role during the last two wars.

The only people who think jobs like 13F and 19D are massively different from 11B are infantrymen. Everyone else realizes that the most recent conflicts have pretty much made them all do the same shit, since there haven't been any "real" doctrinally supported battles to fight.

You dont think about it being mental until its

>followed by land nav that if you fuck up enough youre kicked out
>then you run so more after that
and so on. Its not so much just PT, but the thought of having so much to handle both psychically and mentally without a break. Iif you can just zone out and take it one at a time its easier

Enjoy your time in the Rickover, and try not to kill yourself. Get your UIs done while you're still in indoc/life skills. it sounds nerdy as hell but look up navy cadences on youtube and listen to them when you run your PRT and the weekly 5ks. it helps a ton with shaving time off your run.
you'll never get your hands dirty but you'll do a ton of paperwork.
>>
>>31987885
trying to remember all the possible tips I can
some of these aren't even nuke specific but here goes
you have a 6 month grace period after you graduate boot camp to exchange your uniforms for a different size if any of them don't fit anymore, ask your SLPO for an exchange form and go try on new sizes at the uniform shop
don't wear the belt you were issued with your NSUs, it looks like shit. buy one of the fabric belts and the enlisted insignia belt buckle at the uniform shop
buy shirt stays
don't buy corfam shoes, they're for gays
the estimated time it'll take to complete a homework assignment they give you are almost always wrong, assume it'll take longer
keep your room clean
don't underage drink, or I will laugh at you at your public masting and then you will get separated
friends are overrated, just stay in your BEQ and play video games

Why so much paperwork?
Also I already sing cadences in my head whenever I run. It's really effective, and good advice.
What are UI's?

>>31987997
I'm of age, but underage drinking has been the talk around here as of late. They're apparently taking violations of phases and breaking rules really seriously right now. Thanks for all the advice, anon.
>>
Is there anything you can do if you have minor arthritis? Why can't I fly a helicopter if my knees hurt after running 5 miles?
>>
>>31989995
You'll do a ton of paperwork because ETs are in charge of all the safety equipment and basically supervise the reactor plant as a whole, so everything you do has to be very well documented.
Wingate will probably give you a UI (under instruction) sheet tomorrow, you have to be taught how to stand each watch at NNPTC. You won't stand them during A school, only between A school and power school. It's important to get them done because lots of SLPOs won't let you go to phase 2 liberty without having all of them done. It's not bad, there are 13 watches to do and each one takes an hour. It's easy to get them done within the 2-3 weeks you'll spend in indoc/cleaning crew/life skills.

We just had ~13 people publicly captain's masted for underage drinking/violation of phase/providing alcohol to minors, that's why everyone's talking about that shit. Only two of them managed to stay in the program (as E2s of shame), and it's because they're females and they cried. Two got separated altogether and the rest got turned into E-1 PAC seamen, AKA paint chippers.
>>

>>
>>31990158
Roger the fuck that. I'll keep my nose clean.
Paperwork is fine, I suppose. Not like there's much of a choice now anyways.
I appreciate all the information, anon. You've been very helpful.

If you don't mind helping more, I have questions.
How long will each phase last? What is there to do here besides vidya games and working out? Are SLPO's typically there to help you or dick you over?
>>
>>31990452
phase 2 starts 2 weeks after you get in the rickover (usually 4-5 weeks after you get here) lasts another 4 weeks, and then you spend the rest of your time at phase 3 unless you really fuck up and get reduced in phase
depends what you like to do, MWR (the organization that runs the liberty lounge) has something organized every weekend that you can sign up for. it ranges from kayaking to skydiving.
you can sign up to requalify on the M9 and qualify on the M4 for ~$200, and it actually includes an entire day of practice instead of you being handed a gun for 5 minutes. good way to make your ribbon rack prettier.
there's always volunteer shit to do on weekends, and if you do 250 hours of volunteering while in the nuclear pipeline you get a volunteer ribbon for your rack
SLPOs are there to help, they're pretty cool. they will dick you over if you're a cunt, but basically don't fail classes, your PFA, or be a general shitbag and SLPOs can basically be your friends. chief mahon is not representative of SLPOs, he's kind of a cunt
go to patriot's point, you can go tour an aircraft carrier and a submarine for free if you go in uniform
there's a pretty big car scene around here, buy a miata or something and go autocross on the weekends

>>
>>31991853
From what I heard they redesignate you to wherever they need officers, usually into SWOs or if you're lucky and get through NAMI maybe aviation or even the smaller designators, Don't count on it though, most likely SWO. They may let you separate as well but if you owe them money I have no idea how that would work
>>
>>31991890
So I could do a stealth swap into Intel? Is that part of SWO general or its own designator?

>>31991440

>>
>>31991913
If you want to do intel (((failing))) nuke school isn't the way. Apply through OCS. You'd have to get lucky for a slot and whether that field would consider you. The navy might just decide to cut you loose if you wash out of nuke school too. Happens with aviators who wash out.

Intel is separate from SWO though there are SWO-IP/IWs which do a tour as a SWO then go IP/IW or vice versa.
>>
>>31991948
Alright thanks, I'm not planning on failing Nuke school was just curious how it all works

Yeah they kinda did. I toured a fast attack and I think he was describing circumstances where you're in a port at periscope depth and the contact map is full, which is probably a pretty busy time

I guess I gotta analyze my motivations for doing this. If I were on my own, I'd drop out and enlist as a CTN or something like that. I'm only really finishing my degree because my parents are extremely insistent on it. I don't really think I'm officer material or capable of commanding a submarine you feel me. Maybe they're just overselling how much shit you have to keep track of at once, but I think I prefer being told what to do to a degree

I'm looking to join the Marines as infantry in about 6-8 months. As far as fitness goes, I think I'm pretty unfit and a weakling.

I'm doing 55 crunches, 5 pull-ups, and a 27 minute 3-mile. I also want to get my push-ups up of which I can do 35 in one go.

I'm 5"9' and weigh 115 (underweight), but luckily I have barely any body fat.

What sort of improvement is realistically possible for me within 6-8 months? Could I be at least a 2nd class marine by the time I go to basic? Am I gay?

actual Marine here, get 24 or under 3 mile, 23 pullps, 120 crunches and youll be fine. be happy being miserable. get ready to hike a lot.
lastly, gain some weight. they wont take yu underweight. you can be gay, thats ok now. no one cares about body fat if you can get a 285 or higher on the PFT/CFT.

but remember the Marines pass you if you get a passing score, no matter how many times you have to do it.

just remember, dont be a bitch out there.
>>
>>31992223
Are you gay? Yes.

You slightly exceed minimums, so no real worries. They know everyone isn't a PT super stud, it's your job to not be a complete slob when you join. They'll do the rest, believe me. You're fine, you have the right attitude tho, push yourself.

>>
>>31992346
Most guys do think chin ups are easier. I'm just saying when I was in you could do it either way. Different guys had their own preference.

Also you better bump them out. If you show any weakness they will mark you at -1. You always gotta do 1 more, for the corps.
>>
>>31992364
Its a packet (PQS) with line items for signatures. A signature means you've been "properly trained" on whatever the line said. For example on a basic DC qual a line item would be "Demonstrate proper donning of an SCBA". After you get every signature you take a test and sometimes an oral board. Quals can range from simple shit that takes 5 minutes to a warfare pin that takes months. Just do them.

Is it possible to be a lifer with a comfy job like Loadmaster or Boom Op in the Air Force? Or would they eventually force you out into staff?
>>
>>31997516
Probably Cyber Surety.
They say it's cyber security, but don't be fooled. You barely even touch the network/servers, and really spend most of your time dealing with shit like locks, safes, compliance, and lots of paperwork.

It shouldn't really even be considered a cyber job, it's pretty much just admin BS through and through.
>>
If I enlist in the military and I already have a bachelor's degree, will the military still pay for me to get a degree while/after I'm serving?
>>
>>31998272
While being a loadmaster or boom op would be cool as shit, the real "comfy" jobs are all the admin jobs.

You do very little actual work, and as long as you can take the AF's BS, you can bang out 20 years no problem.
You just have to be able to deal with the reality of working a mostly deadend job with a very low skill ceiling.

Like I always say, sign for 4. You can always re-enlist, but there's a big difference between working a job you hate for 3 years vs 5.

>>31998562
Yes. All branches get the GI Bill after 36 months of service, and I know that the AF will pay up to $4500 annually for tuition every year you're still in.

Any reason you aren't commissioning?

>>31998192

>>
>>31998626
I have a B.A. in history with a minor in political science. I doubt that qualifies me to be an officer.
>>
>>31998626
How long are admin jobs usually stationed overseas, or is it the same across all enlisted jobs, and being a loadmaster would have the same chance of being in a base overseas for years? I'd love to be stationed somewhere very foreign like east Asia or south Africa
>>
>>31998655
It actually does.
You submit a package to a board for OTS. They take a lot of things into account, and while your degree might not be as desired as a STEM major, you can still commission. If you're going to enlist anyway, why not try?

>>31998684
Loadmasters generally operate out of a single base, but you'll go all over the place. Probably one of the best jobs if you want to travel a lot. Admin jobs are stationed just like all enlisted jobs, so you have a chance of being stationed overseas, however it's anything but guaranteed. Overseas assignments are 365 day short tours or 2 year extended.

Oh, if you're sure you can get load, do it.

Plus, you can retrain after a few years, so you can still do something interesting with the latter part of your career.

Are there any good jobs a tech can do? The idea of being in a very travel oriented job and suddenly being forced into management because I was good at the job turns me off a bit.
I guess at that point I could just cross train to 3D1X2 or something and have a fairly relaxed IT job
>>
Which support guys get to do the most coolguy stuff?

Right now I'm looking at 15-series, 25-series, and 35-series, but I'll pick some shit like 12B if these all end up being gay desk jobs. Ideally I'd like about 50% desk job 50% coolguy.

What do
>>
>>31998829
>3D1X2
That's me!

Though also, look at it this way. On average, someone will make Tech at their 8-10 year mark. You might have a family/kids by then and want to start settling down.

Crosstraining to 3D1X2 or 3D0X2 wouldn't be a bad idea, but basically anywhere a Tech/Master is going to be doing mostly management stuff, unless you snag a special duty (MTI, MTL, Instructor, etc.). I was thinking crosstraining mostly because your work will change, and you won't be doing the same stuff you had for a decade prior.

Sorry in advance for the blog post.
In high school my plan was to join the military after graduating. After graduating I put it off and kinda just fucked around partying and decided to go to college instead. I graduate from college next month and am now considering joining the Air Force.

How bad will my past partying/weed smoking hurt me? Even though I quit a few years ago, I smoked a lot. Kind of nervous that I won't be eligible to enlist, or maybe not eligible for a security clearance

Considering that I did really well on the asvab, do you think fuel is worth the hassle. I heard that logistic is hell.
>>
>>31998898
They aren't omniscient. If you don't have a record then you'll be good to go.

Secret security clearance should be fine also if you haven't been arrested.

But Top Secret could be tough since they'd possibly interview people who knew you in college and they could admit to drinking or drug usage. Also, if you've ever had an issue with that and an employer took note, you would be better off telling them in the first place.

A good rule of thumb is that the military won't know what you don't tell them but if you're getting investigated for TS/SCI, then they're gonna find some dirt. Fortunately, not having TS doesn't disqualify you from too many jobs.

Eeeehhh I'd say you did a few times, like 5. For 3D0X2, they're going to put you in for a TS, and you need to be sure that your references aren't going to totally throw you under the bus. They can't prove that you did or did not, though, they can only approve or deny your clearance.

The AF advancement is slow.
If you want to saty in longer or retire and actually be able to live off it you need to choose a very difficult MOS/rate preferably in another branch. Some can easily be e-8/9 at 20 and can choose to stay in longer if they like.
Thats the trade off with the AF. The 20 years are much easier but your wallet will suffer cause advancement is so much slower.

>>31999056
Yes you faggot. Is this your first time here? Always lie.
>>
>>31999076

>>31999090
I don't necessarily have a problem with staying longer, since the benefits seem nice, but would you mind giving some examples of these other MOS you're talking about?
>>
>>31999029
>>31999041

Staying in only makes sense if you aren't planning to start a second career, really. If you hop over into another job you can draw both your new paycheck + retirement, and then eventually retire a second time for double pensions.
>>
>>31999056
If you have a TS, you don't "lie" but you reveal only the absolute bare minimum. Like "Yeah I've done it a few times before but I didn't like it that much and I've moved on." Of course, that won't matter if your references are dipshits who sell you out. More importantly, if your references knew you at college or wherever, investigators would probably get the names of some other people who knew you from your references and interview them, so something is bound to show up.

Basically, if you want to get a TS, pick references that didn't know about your drug use and knew no one who knew about your drug use, and then admit the bare minimum to get through. Drug use is only disqualifying if it is current, if they find out you intentionally didn't disclose it, or if it has caused documented problems in the past.

Just don't pick a job that needs a TS if you're so freaked out about it. You seem like you're too dumb to tell a good lie desu. So why don't you just pick something where there's no chance of failure?
>>
>>31999076
You only get 15-20k a year after you retire. It's good but if you want something greater in life you'll probably need another job after the military. Also, don't get divorced because she'll be getting all of that.
>>
>>31999109

E6 retirement is the lowest possible, but it would be around $24k pension + healthcare for life, and usually a pretty decent disability check depending on how messed up you are.

It's enough to live on if you have a paid off house from your time in service, at which point you can just not work again after 40~.

Most people don't do that though, they pick up another job and just have a few thousand dollars in fun money to throw around every month until they die.

You may not have a choice. If youre only E-6 you get forced out at 20. You aint got a choice.

Well the extreme example of this would be going 18x in the army. If you go in and get selected you get auto promoted to E-5. So at 2 years in youre already an E-5. Youll be E-6 at the latest by 6 years in. E7 around 10-12years. E-8 around 15-18 years. And it could be even faster if youre shit hot. Lots of difficult/undermanned jobs are like that. NUKE in the navy sucks ass and everyone gets out. So because of that you advance insnaely fast. Its common to see E-7s with less than 10 years in.
>>
>>31999144
I think your advice has helped me out a lot

I have academic training in counter intelligence, analysis, and interrogation.

I have had an internship/job at an international research firm as well as being in a prestigious politics fellowship as an undergraduate, and a 3.8+ GPA.

What are my chances at commissioning as an officer and has anyone here had interaction with AFOSI?

Just about the same as you'd find in the civ world.
Some supervisors give their females more leeway, others (good ones) hold them to the exact same standards.

In some cases its better than on the outside, since there are some hard and fast rules/standards that you simply can't break.

The big thing is the whole anti-sexual assault and harassment debacle, because a single off color comment can ruin your career if you offend a female.

Then try for something more relevant, like RF trans or another 3D job. Or the electrician AFSC, can't pull it off the top of my head but I think it's 3E something. You'll be able to apply stuff that you learned in your electronics course.
You could always go open electrical, but then you risk getting some ghey flightline swaptronics avionics job.

Basically, if you have electronics skill, going fuels would be a waste. Until you make E-5, you're basically working at a full-service gas station for airplanes.

here comes dat /meg/ oh shit waddup

So I'm graduating meme college with a meme degree in Biochemistry next semester. I was in the process of applying to medical school but that really doesn't interest me anymore. I did want to get into emergency medicine, but I don't feel like spending another 10 years getting to that point. And I'd like a little more excitment than that. Plus I want to learn skills and gain comradery that medical school really doesn't provide.

I was looking into a 68W with an option 40. I figure that might really help me get my rocks off. Currently bike around 5-10 miles per day to get to and from school. The last time I ran a mile it was around 6:30 give or take. The main problem I see currently is my strength. I can only squat around 180, bench 135, deadlift 225. Should I even worry about that at all?

Any predictions on how hard its gonna be to enlist next year? I've got tattoos all the way down to my wrists, which were too far down for the current restrictions and recruiters couldn't really move forward with me(plus I do want to graduate).
>>
>>32008363
The security interviewer will just fly over the SF-86 to confirm your info. Keep in mind these guys are experienced and have seen everything. They won't give a shit (at least mine didn't), unless there's a red flag, for example, meeting with friends in Russia, being in huge debt, etc.

a nuke is a person who operates a nuclear reactor
our aircraft carriers and submarines are all powered by nuclear reactors
some of the subs also carry nuclear missiles but not all of them
it's not comfy, we go through 1.5yrs-2yrs of training whilst trying to avoid suicide either intentionally or inadvertently due to sleep deprivation. you're also surrounded by autists and people with super inflated egos, because we constantly get told we're the smartest enlisted there are and make petty officer 3-6 months after leaving boot camp
and then you get to the ship/boat and stand watch all day, also avoiding dying due to sleep deprivation
if you're on a sub it's even worse because there's a lot of non nuclear shit you have to do, in addition to the zero communication and lack of sunlight or space
we make the most money out of any enlisted person though
