It's called moral, discipline, training, equipment and motivation.

If you are surrounded by enemy troops that aren't the type to make prisoners, you know that retreat or surrender aren't options.
Your only hopes are :
- to hold your ground until reinforcement can relieve you.
- to kill every single one of the hostiles that dare to attack

On the other side, the attackers here each knew that it wouldn't be their individual acts that would win the day.
They had no insentive to overly risk their lifes to take the position : they could always retreat to have another go at it later or, if it came to it, they could even surrender.

When you are surrounded by murderniggers and you are fired upon, you keep your position because you know that, if you don't, the whole perimeter collapse and your cowardice condamned your friends AND you to be dead meat soon.

When murdernigger is fired upon, he just duck and wait. And if his buddies are going down, he'll just make a run for it because "nope, not worth it !!"

They didn't defeat them. They fought then surrendered.

While inexperienced they were professionally trained and equipped with relatively modern small arms.

This is against untrained Africans who were just handed surplus WWII gear and told to go charge them over open ground because their numbers were supposed to intimidate the Irish into surrendering. When that didn't work they got slaughtered.

For starters the Irish had trenches and the enemy didn't.

Secondly the attackers (correctly) thought the irish were inside the church while they made their first attack and thought it would be a walk in the park but a man on a vickers spotted and opened fire on them (not a sniper as in the movie) and they were totally unaware of the trenches and got caught by them.

Thirdly when the helicopter landed to bring contaminated water a rather large group of africans who had sneaked up close in the tall grass opened fire exposing their own positions. The Irish redirected their fire and and lit them up as close as 100-150 yards killing many of them there.

Fourthly the car with a mounted machine gun was not a jeep as in the movie but an armored vehicle which they managed to use to great effect.
