I don't know why there's always so much hate for straight edge and serrated combos. When I was in the Navy those types of knives were the most common in deck, and the most useful. The serrated edges cut through manila lines like gravy, but they were trash for nylon which is were the straight edged part came in handy.

I actually heard something interesting about combo knives the other day. My local dealer is an LE specialist, and they mentioned that cops really like them because they abuse the hell out of their knives and when the plain-edge part goes dull, you can still cut shit with the serrated part.

Karambits are very effective when used the right way. Extensive knowhow on any grappling art + boxing + silat/escrima and you can make karambit a really effective weapon for what it is.

That being said, 99,9% of people don't know how to use one. Same goes for push daggers and F-S knives. And any bladed combat, really.

They are not instantly fatal but incapacitate as fast as a regular knife. Also there are some perks, such as how intuitive karambits are to a boxer/grappler and how different the angles of attack are (very hard to block). A regular knife is instantly fatal only when struck in some very specific places. What you eant is fast incapacitation. Also the movie style distance knife fight is fantasy. Most stabbings happen at a grappling distance.

All that being said I do prefer a "regular" knife in a earth grip. I have a strong boxing background so I like the earth grip.

I used to carry a Benchmade Presidio with the half-serrated blade and I used it everyday for opening bundles with massive cable-ties on them. The serrations were the only thing that could cut them, though something more purpose-built for those sorts of tasks would probably serve better.

Well with "self defense" pocket knives, my self defense theory in order of inportance goes something like this (assuming one fails, move on to the next)
