whats /k/'s experience with pic related. I like the aesthetics of it and just want a cheap fun gun to shoot that I could potentially fend off a home invader with. Thoughts?

There's one for sale for $300 used. I'm pretty new to this. Is that reasonable?

I wanted one myself, since a 6 shot snub is pretty sweet. The reasons I opted against it were:

1.) Price. They've been out of production for years and everyone wants an arm and a leg for them even when in bad condition.
2.) Service. Colt doesn't honor any of their warranties on old wheelguns, and gunsmiths that are proficient with Colt lockwork are a dying breed.
3.) Might not be able to handle modern ammunition. I know one person who blew up the cylinder on an old Colt Cobra by trying to fire +P in it.

What is a reasonable price for one used?

If it's $300 it's a good bet that it's in not great condition.

It's not a Python or anything but even mildly rusted non-snake Colt revolvers rarely dip below $400.

But non-snake Colts are nice revolvers for the money, with very nice finishes.

This guy makes some good points but I might address a couple of points:

You can find these in excellent condition

You will never shoot one out if they are in good condition

If produced after 74' they are fine for P+

They are some of the best snubbies ever made

>>31971397
Depends on condition. Are you familiar with checking the timing on a Colt, and inspecting used revolvers in general?
>>
>>31971423
Not familiar at all. Actually it would be my first firearm purchase. I don't have all the info on the particular model but I think I'll be back soon to check it out again. I have the money to spend and would be okay with taking a chance with it

Here's a helpful guide for newbies to inspect revolvers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39Byz0HqUcQ

Colt specific information on timing:
http://pastebin.com/r4YAc6ZL

Like other anon said, $300 is probably an indication that the condition might be lacking in some areas. You should check out the above info then inspect the gun, you can also check the year it was made by punching in the serial # on colt's website.

For your first purchase I might suggest getting a J-frame or something else.

Thanks man. Appreciate the info

Never take that chance when your life is on the line. The question you should ask yourself is

"Do I trust this with my life?"

Find a range and rent one, see if you're comfortable with it. Once you know that, you're set

tell me where you are finding cheap and fun colt detective specials
>>
>>31971461
If you aren't familiar with how to check used revolvers, read up on the steps through the links some of the other anons provided and try to ask someone who has experience in checking a used revolver to come with you. There's much more to check with a used revolver than a used semi-auto, so it pays to have some help.

If things with the DS don't pan out, I second >>31971473 in his suggestion to check out a J-frame. They're 5 shot rather than 6, but they're quality guns with a lot of options available depending on what you want/need.

Colt revolvers, sadly, suck. In that size class- get a Ruger SP101.

not made anymore/10, so thats a shame. ANy you find will be collectors items and probably double what its worth
Ive never found them that much bigger then a j frame, despite the extra round. The originals were a lot less bulky though. Other than that its your standard colt revolver. The clockwise turning and pull to release took some getting used to cause I was used to Smiths but still reliable and cool. Just another thing I colt colt made agin

Everyone needs a revolver, mine is my favorite pistol. I'd rather grab my Glock for HD though, unless I was naked.

Looking for revolver recommendation: da/sa, .357 mag, not huge, tank built, poorfag approved.
Does such a piece exist?
>>
>>31973502

if you remove these it does.
>>
>>31973502
>tank built
>not huge
These are essentially contradictory in revolver land. Rugers are huge tanks, Colt, S&W, Taurus, etc. are neither.
