There are a ton in that price point.
Get a model 70 winchester.

M1.
unless you reload your own hotload fuddy-ot-six in a custom-cut (read: chambered barrel blank bull-barrel), everything else is 308 <600yd or 338 for up to 1200yd.

Savage Axis. $300 gun that shoots safely, reliably, and will shoot a 3/4" group at 100 yards all day with the right ammo (available at Wal-Mart). Cheapest at big box stores; wait for sales.

Would you reword your question and be a little more vague, please.
>>31971154
OK, I want to buy a rifle in 30-06 but my budget is $1000.

What is your purpose going to be for it?

>.30-06 for HD
This is fucking retarded but a Garand will be least retarded. Get something in 5.56, 5.45, or 9mm.

Ruger American
M1 Garand from CMP + schuster plug or ported plug.
You get history in your hands and although very outdated by current semi auto rifles, it'd still be more than enough to protect you.

Agreed (Sorry for shit mobile pic)
.308 is the successor to that round as a result of advances in propellant chemistry, just get a .308, smaller and cheaper with basically the same ballistics.
Marlin xl7
Never had a problem with it
Hunting rifle? Go to any gun store that you trust and check the used rack after deer season ends. Plenty of great guns with some decent glass on them for $500 or under.

Nope. More case capacity and longer neck means more versatility. You can get some hot-loaded stuff that is a couple of hundred FPS hotter than 308, or launch heavier bullets at the same speed. (great for reloading) Price is almost identical, unless you are going through milsurp .308.
i've been thinking a vepr 30-06 would be pretty nifty but someone needs to make some big ass mags for it
>>31974212
If we were strictly talking about M2 ball you'd be absolutely correct; however those same advancements in propellant chemistry you mentioned coupled with the extra case capacity of 30-06 have turned it into a very versatile cartridge.

There are apparently some 30-06 Saigas and Norincos floating around
