Can I get that Swiss anon in here, please? I have a Schmidt-Rubin question.

My Schmidt-Rubin was totally smooth, and today I oiled it without getting it dirty or anything, but now the action is rough and gritty as fuck. I tried cleaning the action, to no avail.

What do?
>>
>>31970958
Help please.
>>
>>31970958
This fucking sucks.
>>
>>31970958
Is the action dry or oiled
>>
>>31971786
Oiled. It was smooth when I got it, but after cleaning it and oiling it, it's rough, gritty, and takes more effort to cycle back and forth.

I've checked for debris, but found nothing.
>>
Did you over oil it? Maybe it's picking up particles of stuff and causing your problem.
>>
>>31970958
clean, reoil, repeat

what kind of oil are you using?
>>
>>31971963
Did at first, then I cleaned it out, and lightly oiled it.

>>31972069
Some Birchwood Casey oil, nothing fancy at all.
>>
sounds like the oil is loosening up some shit inside of it.

Clean your weapon, you dirty fuck.
>>
>>31972088
>Birchwood Casey oil
not tru-oil, right?
>>
>>31972169
No, it's oil for metal, not wood.

>>31972144
I just got it shipped to me recently, you dink. I'm probably the first person to clean it in decades. The confusing part is that it was buttery smooth when I got it, and now that it's clean, it feels like there's fucking gravel in there even though I can't see or feel anything wrong in the receiver or bolt...both components are smooth and oiled..yet it feel like total shit now which is why I'm fucking confused.

Did you completely take the bolt apart and clean it? Don't lie to me anon.
>>
>>31972366
Yes, I did.

I'm starting to think it's just the oil being so thin, whereas the oil that it came with in Switzerland was thicker, and no it wasn't cosmoline.

No, I doubt it was cosmoline. I would say clean it again and strip the oil. Try choke grease. I use grease on all my older guns and have never had a problem.

Other posters are right, it may well be grit.

For my k31 and other bolt action's I use anhydrous lanolin as a lube. It's thick and not interchangeable with oil for low-friction moving parts but for bolts that have metal v metal with force I like it.
>>
>>31972415
I know I gotta clean it again, but that 1896 action is so fucking tough to clean the entirety of.

I think there has to be, but I can't fucking find it with my eyes and flashlight or when I try to feel around in there. I even cleaned it out with a stiff nylon brush, no difference in how damn rough it is now.

Pic related: scuffing on the bolt sleeve I'm certain wasn't there before.
>>
>>31972538
you could strip everything and wash it with soap and water, just dry everything thoroughly (hairdryer helps) and oil it all afterwards.

Been there, done that.

I'm worried I'll have to take it to a gunsmith to polish out the damn scuffs on the bolt sleeve and to clean the action out better than I can.

I'm just afraid now to even put the bolt back in, for fear it'll just abrase it even worse.
>>
>>31972576

Sounds like you did clean it well.

Maybe you replaced grease with oil. While oil is perfect for many modern guns, older ones work better with some grease. Remember, oil for friction-less parts that slide against each other, grease for metal parts that rub against each other.

Some white-lithium grease is easy to find and should do the trick; I do like my lanolin tho.
>>
>>31972605
Got a good clar picture of the bolt channel? Might have a small burr hiding somewhere.
>>
>>31972618
No grease at the moment, just oil. I still don't know how to explain those scuffs on the bolt I'm fairly certain weren't there before.

>>31972626
I've looked with an LED light, and I can't see anything fucky in there.
>>
>>31972618
yeah I was thinking this too, he probably needs some grease. I'd use something with moly, and work the action a lot to try to smooth it out.

OP, have you ruled out any kind of hardware issues with the rifle? everything assembled correctly and nothing bent or broken? I'm not familiar with the rifle enough to know if there is anything that could happen to cause an issue like this.
>>
>>31972695
>bent or broken

No. I know how to take it apart and reassemble it, you can't really do it wrong on that gun. It's literally a matter of having applied some oil to it, then it got rough as fuck. After that, I thoroughly cleaned and oiled it...same result, rough and heavy.

Before I added oil to it, it was as it was when I got it shipped to me, that is still lubed in the stuff the Swiss owner had used.

God damn it, I'm just afraid now my rifle is fucked. I'll be the faggot that has the only Mosin-tier Schmidt-Rubin on the planet.
>>
>>31972758
>I'm just afraid now my rifle is fucked

no, definitely not. if you are that concerned, take it to a gunsmith.
>>
>>31972820
I think I'm going to, he'll at least be able to clean and smooth out those scuffs that I think are now causing the problem, even if the initial problem could have been grit that got loose with the oil I added.

Wonder how many first born children he'll charge me though.
>>
>>31970958
Op listen to me. You need to clean the entire thing DRY, take out the standard issue grease and grease everything, best with a flanell cloth. Once you have done that youll never have ro grease it ever again, if at all just swipe the bolt face lightly. You fucked up the second you degreased it.

If you are a scrub and unable to get standard issue, buy Klüber Lubrication "Microlube GBU Y 131" as it is the closest to it. *for the action only, for the barrel use standard issue Automatenfett.
>>
>>31974772
Could I spray brake cleaner into the receiver away from the barrel? It's a 96/11 and that receiver is fucking impossible to reach or scrub well.

After that, I'd grease. Did you see those scuffs? Think they need to be polished out?
>>
>>31975116
Brake cleaner can severely fuck up bluing.
>>
>>31975116
Fucks up the bluing. Also no dont polish., its not necessary.
>>
>>31975124
Shit. I don't know how to really reach some of those nooks and crannies, even with a brush. It's gotta be something I either can't see, or my bolt sleeve is fucked from whatever got loosened up.

Define "schmidt-rubin" that's an action type, not a gun.

Have you been cycling the gun a lot with the GP11 ammo and not shooting it? Check the front of the chamber, there could be a buildup of wax from the ammo that never got burned out from being fired.
>>
>>31975147
Give a picture of the parts and from inside the reciever please.

I dont see anything especially wrong, not that i see a lot but well. Just use a little screwdriver and a nice piece of cloth to clean everything, as i suppose youdont have the original tools. Take the time and it should run again.

You used oil¿ There's your problem, you're supposed to use grease to lube Schmidt-Rubins
