Rate mine. Looking to get a knife about 5 inches that is good for pretty much every task I can think of needing a knife for when I'm camping or hiking. Looking to get an esee 5 or bk16 or a tops fieldcraft but I want a good 5 or 6 inch blade, some kind of carbon steel, full tang, and a good sheath (i perfer leather sheaths and wood scales)

You seem to like more traditional, to-the-point designs, yet you fall for the youtube memes instead of buying hand made knives that'd cost you around as much.

Yes they're popular but pebeian.

You could have done much better with the same money, but you went for the common denominator knives.

All knives more or less perform similarly, but some go the extra mile to have nice thins. You didnt.

I like it. Very stiff backspring, hallow ground, high carbon steel, it gets very sharp very easily. Really thin, dissappears in your pocket, comfortable to use. Overall a really cool design. They make a smaller one too, and a version with more of a drop point instead of the Turkish clip.

Generals are cancerous trash and you should all be ashamed of yourselves.
>>
>>31970953
There is nothing wrong with your picture knife because it is all serrations. Its not trying to do double duty.
The issue most people have with them is when they take up half of the blade with them and act like it adds to it when really it takes away. You lose the straight good cutting edge, and you dont have enough serrations to be useful.

Want to get a knife but not sure what one.
It will be my first, will be used for self defense mainly, but I would like to possibly take it out to the forest nearby and slash some things, like dead branches or twigs.
Would also like to keep it cheap. $40 is my max, and it will be my first knife. Would also love to have an assisted or an automatic.
Recommendations?

Go check the knifemaker's market on BladeForums to see just how much of a market there is for reasonably priced handmade knives.

I personally own three knives from Joe Calton of Calton Cutlery, one from Robert Erickson and one from Daniel Rohde.

Pic related is a Calton necker in 1095 at ~62 HRC that is ~0.07" at the spine and ~0.08" behind the edge.

Agreed.

They look like they could break at any moment and not perform any duty heavier than opening an envelope. Maybe you could skin and gut a deer with it, but if you want a scalpel like blade you're far better off getting pic related.

Excellent knives except the handles are very smooth and slick when wet. You'll want to put something like hockey tape or grip tape on.

Otherwise - helle, ahti, esee (esp. camp lore series and esee3hm), bhk, lt wright, and others - depends on how much you want to spend.

Hello sharps!

My Opinel Hermione finally came in today.

I'll share with you some pictures of the lovely knife. So far I have no complaints other than the fact that I think it could be sharper. I'm new to sharpening so I'll practice on a shittier folder freehand on my waterstone before touching this up. But other than that, I'm super pleased with everything and quite ecstatic.

There's a very VERY tiny edge bevel on it, and while it feels somewhat sharp-ish, it certainly doesn't feel SHARP sharp like I'd want it.

They're okay as a light use pocket knife. Maybe something to keep at your desk. They're really interesting and unique.

I used one for about a year as a daily. They take longer to open and shut if you bother to lock it. And it's REALLY hard to open or shut if you get it wet because the wood swells. It goes back to normal though when it drys out.

I now have a Svord from New Zealand. Very utilitarian, looks like a knife a fisherman would use.

Actually not a bad start if you actually secured the blade properly (it doesn't look like you did)

Do you have a drawknife? Rasp? Sandpaper? Clamps for days?

Woodworking sucks without the right tools.
>>
>>31982711
Hard to tell from that picture, but it appears you're forming multiple secondary bevels. You can see the bevel angle delta starting near the base of the blade and terminating slightly past half-point. You aren't maintaining grind angle when you turn the knife across the stone. When you go to cut paper to test sharpness, the paper will feel this angle change and cause it to scrunch/fold instead of split.

For actual knife function it doesn't matter, but it would certainly "feel" less sharp even though the edge itself at any point would be fine. It's just the angle change. Work on consistency when grinding.
>>
>>31982376
Higo no Kami is based, thick as fuck spine, decent steel, really small. Nice for slicing shit, probably wouldn't pry with it or other stuff I would similarly do to a beater knife.

Black cat is pretty good, IMO it's kind of a bastard of an opinel (blade wise) and a higo no kami (action wise)

Peasant knife is decent for innawoods, too big for EDC in my opinion. Also, if you do get one, for fucks sake get the wood handle.
>>
>>31983164
ahh yes thank you with the Opaki.
so the Black Cat, i immagine so but i might as well find out, but does the handle feel the same as the Higo?
its clear to see that the black cat and douk douk are pretty similiar, so i immagine i wont find a huge difference between them, but the peasant is quite different.
do you notice the handle of the black cat being shitty or anything? i'd heard that the higo's was.
>>
>>31983304
>wood handle
absolutely.
so in terms of steel, hows the Higo compare to the Black cat? and all of the others, for that matter.
>>
>>31983291
Should I try doing more passes on the 1000 side, or try reprofiling again on the 250 first?
>>
>>31983321
I'm one of the guys who said the Higo's handle is kinda shitty and I actually like the Black Cat's despite them both being metal handles.

The difference being the Black Cat's handle is a bit thicker and a lot better rounded, whereas with the Higo it's almost like they just folded it over.
>>
>>31983345

If you're forming a bevel, lower grit is better. It removes material faster. However, you don't necessarily need to form a new bevel, just correct it. Either can work.

It all depends on what you need your knife to do. If you're just sharpening your knife to working condition, you did a good job, and it'll get better with practice. If you're trying to get your knife autistic sharp for no reason, then a regular whetstone isn't what you should be using, there are multiple sharpening systems which eliminate human error, like the Sharpmaster or

http://tsprof.com/?lang=eng

which will be more than you ever need.

I'd say be patient and the skills will come, and if you're willing to potentially murder the edge on expensive knives in the pursuit of super sharp, then you can afford a sharpening system more advanced than "drag knife across rock."
>>
>>31983331
Well, the higo no kami is high-carbon steel, so pretty much nothing at all like the Opinel.

The black cat I have is also carbon steel, but it's noticeably softer than the higo no kami, I would almost go for stainless on this one even though it isn't "original"

I mostly use the peasant knife for innawoods shit so I have a very different edge on it. It's pretty decent steel, similar to higo no kami but I haven't compared them heavily.

I don't think any of them besides opinel and probably mercator use an actual listed steel type, and even the mercator is "mercator carbon" whatever the fuck that is.

If I had to rank them in terms of blade quality it would go
higo>peasant>opinel=mercator
Handles (comfort) it would be
peasant=opinel>mercator>higo
Handles (size)
peasant>opinel>mercator>higo

Two things to note, the giant fucking tang on the peasant knife is more inconvenient than you might think, and the higo's handle is perfectly fine as long as you hold it right (Saber no handshake you fucking plebs)

I actually can't afford a whole lot, and while I know there are remove_human_error systems, I would like to learn to naturally and properly master freehand sharpening.

I guess right now I'm "good", but I want to shoot for "great".

I'm interested in that "autistic" edge if by autistic edge you mean hair cutting razor sharp. Though I'm having a hard time getting there. This blade certainly isn't cutting any hairs.

To answer your questions as best I can right now, this CRKT I am using is in 8cr13mov, and the waterstone is double sided with 250 and 1000 grits, so that's a no to any 6k.

So far I've just tried to reprofile with the 250 and sharpen the fuck out of it on the 1000, even though that doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot for me. I get a pretty edge, but it doesn't feel super sharp yet. Maybe it is sharp, just not, sharp sharp. I don't really know.

You could have saved up your money and gotten a 1000 grit waterstone, a 6000 grit waterstone, a knife with non shit steel, and a tiny piece of a leather for around 75 dollars and you would be getting razor sharp edges no problem, but you blew it on a shitty 250 1000 combo stone a chink folder.

>>
>>31983994
>treated and tempered themselves

Do you even steel?
I agree with your point though, shits durable.

>>31984015
Depends on a load of factors, I have a super steep grind on mine so no, the edge won't chip, but carbon steel is inherently more brittle than softer steels.
>>
>>31984039
>Do you even steel?
Funnily enough I work with it for a living and I've used L6 in it's original application.

>but carbon steel is inherently more brittle than softer steels.
Technically all steel is carbon steel as it's the carbon that turns iron into steel. Once the carbon content gets high enough it begins to increase brittleness but the flip side of this is carbon also increases tensile strength so the steel might have a higher chance to chip but this chipping will occur at a point far above where a lower carbon steel has already folded, things like chromium, silicon and manganese can also increase tensile strength.
>>
>>31984104
>I've used L6 in it's original application.
So you operate a machine that uses bits of some type, doesn't make you steel meister
>Technically all steel is carbon steel as it's the carbon that turns iron into steel.

Was waiting for this, you know exactly what I meant.

>above where a lower carbon steel has already folded
We were talking about chipping

And if you do actually into steel you should know that even if they use L6 as stock, after its been worked and tempered it is no longer actually L6 at least in terms of functionality, the composition is presumably the same.

it should already be sharp on the 250, before you progress to higher grits. If you skip ahead too early you can end up with a knife that's significantly less sharp than it could be.

Before you move on from the rough stone, I suggest you
Work up a burr on one side with the 250. Then the other side. Then four feather light passes at 45 degrees to the stone to remove the burr (check to make sure it's gone) then two or three passes at original angles on both sides.

Then I usually do a few edge trailing passes, I find it really helps.

When done correctly, this will leave you with a very usable edge on a rough stone. It's just basic burr based method, but it really helps when just starting out learning to sharpen.

Also it's worth noting that if you use a 1000 water stone with a good slurry it produces a very polished edge that may not feel as aggressive as you are used to. Try it on a piece of paper.
>>
>>31982711

Watch this video and practice until you can consistently produce results that will easily slice newsprint and pushcut it with the grain off your coarsest stone:

https://youtu.be/cWU_qTp3DLM
>>
>>31983470

It's possible to get an apex that will whittle beard hair of a ~320 grit Norton India fine oilstone.

Higher grits have the effect of replacing larger microscopic teeth with smaller microscopic teeth and thus change the balance between pushcutting sharpness and slicing sharpness (bigger teeth are better for slicing, smaller teeth better for pushcutting), but it's possible to get a coarse edge just as sharp (defined by average apex width) as a fine one.
>>
>>31983550
>>31983657

No, he is correct. You have contributed absolutely nothing useful whatsoever.

You can get dollar store kitchen knives sharp enough to whittle beard hair, shave, or pushcut a tomato if you have the right skills.

The only issue 8cr13mov would present is that it is often both under-hardened in the heat treatment stage and overheated at the edge when being power sharpened at the factory.

Both issues would tend to make the steel more prone to forming a ragged, difficult to remove burr but those issues can be avoided by learning to shear off a butt with high angle passes.

For someone just learning to freehand, a 250/1000 combo is likely to be much more useful than a King 1k/6k, unless the person is planning to only sharpen kitchen knives (which will be at best lightly blunted when they get sharpened).

Also stropping on plain leather does not produce meaningfully useful results except on a straight razor as it does not work for burr removal and the silicates in the leather are too fine to be useful for anything except a 10,000+ grit edge.
>>
>>31985427
this is a seriously important concept to grasp when learning to sharpen.
>>

My EDC knives mostly get used for good prep, cardboard, clamshell packaging, and stuff like that.

Those kinds of cutting tasks don't really scratch up the blade too much, plus I've thinned out the primary grinds on a bunch of my knives so you wouldn't really notice any scratches anyway.
>>
>>31985572

http://www.phila.gov/philacode/html/_data/title10/CHAPTER_10_800_SAFETY/10_820_Cutting_Weapons_in_Publ.html

You can own them, you just can't take them in public.
>>
>>31968529
I wouldn't consider either of those as a hunting knife. Look into brands like bark river, benchmade, buck, knives of alaska if you want hunting knives
>>
>>31968725
good choice anon, you won't be disappointed. However, you have embarked on a one way journey down the path of spyderco, and you wont be able to stop until you have their top tier knives
>>
>>31985761

>>
>>31985750

>>
>>31975498
awesome knife. remember they have quite a long break in period, so if you experience a sticky lock it will go away eventually
>>
>>31985785

I bought some Hoppe's 9 lubricating gun oil and it fixed all of my knives.
>>
>>31985772
They just make great quality, affordable knives that work. That's about it, but funnily enough I usually find that the quality and fit and finish of their knives is better at their taiwanese and japanese factories than their american one
>>
>>31985917
Well their Taiwanese knives tend to be pretty exxy so with lower labour cost and higher prices they'd want to be finished well. Never had a problem with either a Jap or US one though.
>>
>>31986064
Yeah that's true, I've handles a few but never bought one myself for that very reason. I've never had a problem with any jap ones but I still haven't owned a us one to this day, because i have had to send all 4 back because of problems (major sticky lock, blade touching liners it was so off-centre, major blade play) all of this on 2 pm2s, 1 manix 2 and one manix 2 xl
>>
>>31985503
I just baby my knives. I don't use them for hard work because I don't have any hard work to use them for. I only ever need them for light tasks, and when I'm done with those I like to clean them up and take care of them. I'm sure if I had some harder tasks my knives would be a little more worn than they are

I want to get a medieval style dagger that is very sharp, or at least is capable of being sharpened.

What do I need to look for to find something like? Google comes up with some options, but they all seem cheaper than i was expecting and they don't say whether they are actually usable or capable of being sharpened.

I'd prefer something with a scabbard.
>>
>>31986735
Most of them are probably shit tier display pieces. You might get lucky, but it's doubtful.

Probably have to go custom made, or get a fairbairn sykes or arkansas toothpick re-deone with a custom hilt and crossguard
>>
>>31986735
Darksword armory has exactly what you need.

Pre Sharpened, full tang, leather and wood handles, high carbon steel, and matching scabbards.

Prices are not bad either.

>>
>>31987092
God damn they polish the Fuck out of those blades.

If yours looks like that when it comes, do yourself a favor and scuff it up so it doesn't look like cheap stainless steel.

Also make sure you keep it oiled. High carbon steel will rust right the Fuck up. Treat it better than your guns (if you have any).
>>

2 recommendations.
1) get a 6000grit stone and make sure to work up a slurry on it before you start your passes. It'll put a mirror finish on the edge and fine out your sharpening.
2) always finish your sharpening with a strop and compound. Makes a stupid amount of difference.
The 1000stone is where I start, unless I've got a burr or serious edge damage to fix or I'm completely reprofiling cause reasons. The 6000 is your finish stone so you aren't really using the grit to get to razor sharp unless your technique is perfect. So get a finish stone and strop your knife (ideally you'd want to strop after use as well to reduce the amount you actually have to sharpen the knife). Good luck anon, I'm in the struggle with you, can't get that even secondary bevel either but I finish and strop and it's been the difference.
>>
>>31987390

He needs to learn to consistently reach an apex on the coarsest stone he has, higher grit stones and/or stropping are not going to help.

Also, stropping is neither always necessary or even desirable depending on how coarse and apex finish you want.
>>

>high angle passes
you should make more videos steel drake! they were pretty neat.
>>
>>31987472

When I have time. Next videos will be about whether you can sharpen Maxamet at ~67-71 HRC on aluminum oxide waterstones, silicon carbide waterstones or only diamond plates.

Has to be done to generate some empirical data for or against the ogre repeated theory that using AlOx or SiC on high hardness high vanadium steels creates a malformed, weak edge prone to carbide tear out.

As you might imagine, proponents of the theory that you can't use aluminum oxide stones to sharpen steels with 4%+ vanadium don't react well to me telling them I use my King 1000 regularly on CPM-M4...

Yeah, I don't like buying anything less than 3in in length.

PA knife laws are rather laid back. Some local cops might try to tell you your knife is an illegal length, but generally speaking, if it isn't automatic or 5+ inches, they'll let you go and won't confiscate it.

If you were just out hunting and are wearing your camo, have your hunting license, etc. You can easily get away with carrying a 6in knife for field dress and defense purposes.

Note: This statement does not apply to Philadelphia. They will confiscate and book you for any edged weapon or even tool like a boxcutter if you cannot call your boss at work and have him vouche that you need it in the workplace.
>>
What's the best stone I can get for less than $30? I'm not new to sharpening freehand or anything, to be clear, it's just that my old stone is fucked because I dropped it like a retard.
To be more precise with what I'm looking for, I'd prefer something that leaves a good edge for push cutting, not slicing.

The clip made it more uncomfortable to hold IMO (though the handle itself is pretty comfy). Your mileage may vary. The retention on the clip wasn't that good either.

Great knife otherwise. There was a sprint run with black coated blades not too long ago. Shouldn't be too hard to find if you want one. Fred Perrin always makes solid, functional designs.

If you can get your hands on an auto, get a Boker Kalashnikov from Bladeops. 30-70 dollars, depending on the steel you get. A lot of people love 'em

For an Assisted knife, I recommend a Kershaw Blur (~60 USD, what I have. But I got mine for 35 USD lol) or SOG Flash 2 (~50 USD).
