Yes, and even those efforts have had a significant impact on the markets despite happening on a much smaller scale. See: Springfield or Armscor

With that in mind, imagine what will happen if Norinco gets to flood the market with their (typically pretty decent) copes of American firearms being made at a price point that no American company can compete with. I can guarantee you that it would at the very least be a deathblow for Colt and would put Remington on the ropes.

We as consumers would stand to gain from it, but the companies would lose and lose big. That's why I can't imagine they would just sit by and let the NRA get behind a proposal to do away with import bans unless a massive tariff came attached to the repeal of said bans.

That will work as long as the Chinese government does not interfere. If they grant Norinco a generous subsidy that allows them to actually sell firearms at a loss for a given period of time with the aim of wiping out the competition in America, even the kind of tariff you've described wouldn't be enough. I know it sounds far-fetched, but consider what happened with Google and other American companies when they tried making inroads into China.

I can only hope so. I mean, have you bought anything from an American firearms manufacturer that was made in recent years?

Companies like Sig, Marlin, and Remington are basically lemonade stands these days. Colt is in and out of bankruptcy. Winchester and Browning are made by Japan and Belgium and are American in name only. Smith and Wesson, while not as far gone as some of the others, hasn't made anything innovative in decades and has allowed its QC to slip enough that it's making guns that fail when they get wet and can't seem to make guns without canted barrels. To me, this says that all of these companies have a problem with the quality demanded of their workers as well as a terrible corporate culture that prioritizes quarterly earnings over brand value. Pressures from strong foreign competition will only stand to make things worse unless they get their act together.
