I own a bunch of guns and own a few kukris I use for yardwork. Should I buy a sword and what kind? I am Vietnamese but can speak some Jap. I wanted to get one of the WWII Japanese swords just for collecting, but I wouldn't ever use it just for fun and fucking around.

I know there's some Vietnamese katana company if you're actually in Vietnam.

http://tuoitrenews.vn/lifestyle/20904/the-makers-of-traditional-japanese-swords-in-vietnam

If you're an American-born Vietnamese, then stop shaming your ancestors and get a Vietnamese sword. A lot of them have Japanese influence from mercs, pirates, and traders heading down to Vietnam once China stopped closed their borders. So you if you insist on being a weeb, you can kill two birds with one stone.

>These "dao" (pronounced "yao" or "zao" depending on the dialect) are the equivalent of the Chinese dadao, and come in a great range of sizes, from small choppers like this to true two-handed falchions of considerable length. The presence of engraving on the blades, and the common use of rattan as a grip wrapping material, that generally distinguishes these dao from their Chinese counterparts. These weapons were widely made and used by the common people, as they were in China, and a considerable number were captured and brought home as souvenirs by the French military during the colonial period. They are colloquially known as "douk-douk" in French, and the blade shape inspired the design of military machetes and even folding utility knives still made today.

Ask Valiant Armoury - they have some amazing pieces. It's a custom piece, a Prescot with a wheel pommel and kriegschwert guard
>>
Is it legal to OC a sword? I don't give a fuck if it's practical for self defense, I already carry a gun, and that's still what I'll yank out and magdump if my person or property is infringed etc... I'm not talking about functionality, I'm talking about fashion; is it legal to carry swords? If so, let's fucking bring it back, that shit's classy as fuck.
>>
>>31962104
I'm not shilling for them - I only have the one sword besides a beat up hanwei wakizashi. All I can say is how impressed I am with their customer service and quality. I would feel rmiss if I didn't let people know of a good manufacturer who includes high quality scabbards
>>
>>31962104
Not him, but I've heard decent things about Valiant Armory's production line. The non-custom swords go for around $300-500, which is pretty reasonable as far as swords go.

They've gotten a lot better from their old days (early or mid 2000 something) where their swords were functional but way heavy or unbalanced.

Valiant armoury is considered to be an excellent choice. Their quality isn't up to Albion's - but for around $500 I would consider their signature line to be the best package deal available.

Is that a recent repro? Because that bitch would be too thick n heavy to do anything, like swinging a piece of rebar, with two gulches and such steep crosssection.
>>
>>31970930
You can't even see the cross section, it may look thick because the lighting is intended to highlight the fuller. But yeah it is recent. From what I've heard, their swords are quite well made, even ignoring the obvious decorative craftsmanship. Weight, balance and materials are all top notch and that spatha will run you 3.125€.

Why is it that prominent guards were really only a European thing? So many other cultures seemed to basically have almost no concept of a guard at all.
>>
>>31972314
Only Europeans dueled each other like crazy to the point where they realized complex guards were a good idea.
>>
>>31972373
I'm not really even talking about complex guards. The simplest barebones crossguard is almost ubiquitous on post-Roman swords while many Asian swords still looked like you were more likely to hurt yourself than your opponent when your hand slips up onto the blade.

Honestly, guards and lack of them aren't as big of a deal as people make them out to be. Don't get me wrong, guards are great and I'd prefer a sword with a good guard over one with a small guard or none at all. However, it's really not the end of the world. The tsuba of a katana or a the disk guard of a dao don't look like much, but even that's enough to use to parry.

I've got a Jun Silva ginunting that looks pretty much like this. I was worried about my hand slipping because of people saying for years about the importance of guards blah blah. A few test slashes and chops tests later, and I learned that your hand slipping onto the blade isn't as guaranteed to happen as you'd think.
>>
>>31973173
>Didn't try stabs
>The only attack likely to cause hand on edge
>>
>>31973353
>using stabs with an asian sword that's designed predominantly for slashing
>>
>>31973451
>get opportunity to shank someone whose guard is off and win the fight instantly
>nah, lets not stab
Looking at that ginunting, if they just created a little tsuba-like guard and jammed it between the blade and grip or pinned/glued it in place it would have been a great improvement for little effort.

Noswordz reporting, just how implausible would a sword like this be in combat? Wouldn't it be too heavy?
>>
>>31975382
67 pounds? Yes.
>>
>>31975382
Large two handed swords tended to be around 60in long and weighted about 5-7 pounds.
This sword is 1/3 larger than usual and about 11 times heavier...

Also no guard whatsoever but this is not as wrong as the ridiculous weight.
>>
>>31960746
it's legal in canada to buy a sword. What should I get to start off my /k/ollection?
>>
>>31972314
I saw a theory somewhere that complex guards were heavy and shifted the center of gravity backwards, so were only suitable for Europe's love affair with thrusting swords. It seems logical to me.
You only really see the more elaborate guards on duelling swords. Soldiers just don't need hueg guards. Either they have armor or shields, or it's not their primary weapon anyway.
>>
>>31972814
Even a guard wider than half your finder size would be sufficient to stop slippage. Show me any actual Asian sword used in war that had a guard tiny enough to allow your hand to slip up the blade.

The Scottish were poor and backwards, and they brought whatever they had when they went to war. The guard was especially pointless against the musket wielding English, especially since it was paired with a targe.

Usually you start out with military sabres, they where mass produced and you can get good quality for not too high prices. You can buy online or at gun-shows / collectors events. You can get a real steal if you did your homework and someone on ebay made shitty pics.

Frankly, do buy your sharps from smiths that also do HEMA. They usually know a good deal better about blade physics and historical appearance and how a good sword should handle.
They also get a lot of quality feedback to improve their products.

You won't really find brands, just have to look around.

Here's a good place. You can find stuff on ebay, but you have to know how to spot the difference between a real and a fake and I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you can ask someone who knows more. Maybe you'll get lucky like me and find someone who's only selling in canada and pick up an antique for $50 usd

You should go to your club and get into it a little, try out loaner gear and see what other people are using before you make decisions like that.

HEMA rookies will usually prioritize spending their money on protective equipment/feder for sparring/drilling ASAP rather than sharps or blunts..

Natives in the pacific islands and other colonial nations had a tendencies to steal anything iron or steel from the occupying forces. Rails and spikes in India were commonly missing, while plane parts and truck parts went missing throughout the underdeveloped world. Easy, quality metal. It's hard to say without seeing it anon. It could be a relic, or it could be made recently and just sold by a hungry blacksmith

>ring halfway up the blade
Holy shit, this is genious.
It basically gives you a second, little guard further down the blade so you can control your opponent's weapon better at reach. Not a game-changer, but effective and applicable to most tapered blades, provided an adequate-size ring.

It's a type of dha. That specific type of dha is often referred to as a Montagnard sword.

Nice messer. Whats with the kitchen knives.
>>
>>31975720
Cause this would be a good sword. the extra weight from that lump at the end might make it a alright chopper.
>>
>>31979397
Wait, is that a screw-on throwing star pommel?
>>
>>31982709
The one below the messer is a bauernwehr, which is actually more of a general all purpose knife, from camp to home defense.

The two bottom ones are an eating set that people often carried with them.

I've read that the ring/ball looking thing is actually meant to give you better purchase on a half-sword or mordhau grip.

We were fighting those guys until about 1936; so I'd guess it's the real deal but hard to tell without pictures of the actual sword.
